No heater required. I've used the diluted whey as an acidifier for plants in my garden since I have alkaline soil. How do you flavor your yogurt?

I've done 1 gal 1% pasterized milk in my 5 qt slow cooker, & it takes abt 2 hrs to reach 180 deg F. Unplug the slow cooker. It takes abt another hr to cool down on its own (no ice bath) to abt 100 deg F. Stir in 1 c (8 fl oz) yogurt, wrap the entire slow cooker in towels, & put in a draft-free area, like the oven (I just put it into a cold oven, but wrap all around the top, bottom, & sides w/ towels). Then just let it sit. Yogurt is very easy & quite forgiving

V L, I do what Ann said. I use pasteurized milk from the store as I don't have animals to milk. I pour the milk in my clean slow cooker and heat. When it's at 180, I turn it off and leave the lid up and let it cool to 110. That's when I mix in the yogurt, close the lid and wrap it in towels. I don't turn it back on. The towels and the slow cooker base insulate it so the cultures can grow. In the morning I mix it up and refrigerate. I usually make it with whole milk and don't strain the whey, because I freeze it plain into ice cubes to feed it to my dog for digestion issues. I tried 2% for my family to eat, but we like it sweet and I had trouble flavoring it. So, for me, the yogurt making is easy, but the flavoring is harder.

@@mamalv1 No, you definitely don't have to. It's already been pasteurized to death before it hits the store shelves, and is already safe to consume. Just heat it to 110 and then add the culture. However, if you don't heat it to 180 first it won't be as thick.
