That’s great how to video. I have never used waxed dirt or waxed sand been always using peat moss but after watching this I going give this try. Thanks for sharing

Excellent video i saw a guy on mink creek outdoors use a paddle bit in a cordless drill to break down a block of wax I’ve tried it and it works very well the chunks you have left just mash with a sledge hammer only takes a second best method I’ve found for breaking down 10 pounds of wax Thank you for a great video

nice video definitely the best way to keep sets working. With coyotes only bringing $3 can't imagine going to this expense and effort. Dried peat moss and salt will have to suffice for me.

Also, staggs, how does a dogless trap work? Looking at getting a bridger dogless but no good video of how it sets...

Exactly what model of those KO Jr traps do you recommend for coyotes? There are several versions. 2 spring 4 spring off set and regular. Thanks for sharing your knowledge.

I use regular jaw (cannot STAND offset-jaw traps, unless your state mandates their use...) with outside jaw laminations and all mine but one are four-coiled. (I picked up one at a show and he didn't have four-coiled ones with him.) I use four-coiled traps because I trap in some extremely rough conditions, with lots of heavy freeze-thaw occuring; as such, my traps often have to come up through a layer of frozen tundra before they have a chance to hold the animal's paw -- I want to give myself (and my trap) the best chance possible to accomplish that mission.

Ever tried doing the cooling directly in the mixer while it turns with a fan on it? The metal on that mixer should be enough of a conductor to help bring the temp down while the mixer keeps it moving.

Yessir. I tried that originally, and it all clumped up so bad that it was a huge pain to get out and break up after it all cooled.

Question. At 23:40 when you are showing the "big clumpy" stuff and tossing into a pile, can you throw that back into the mixer with another load to re-melt the clumps? I realize at some point you will have to deal with the clumps, but re-melting might minimize some of the labor. Great video!!!

I threw it all in a 5-gallon bucket to experiment with later... I'll try both what you suggested, as well as spreading it out on a tarp and just smashing it with a "tamper" of some sort... my guess is that tamping it may be the easiest way to go.

@@StaggsintheWild Maybe throw it back in the mixer, NO HEAT, with some larger rocks to "tumble" it, and then you can sift the rocks out?

@@lonniechartrand I tried tumbling it with no heat... just rolls around inside the tub and beats it to death, LOL. I think it would take heat or tamping it... I'm going to go with tamping it. :)

Let it run in mixer until cool down and use straight out the drum

Nope. It turns into a giant clump if you do that.

Do you bed your whole trap in waxed sand or do you use something else also?

All in waxed sand or dirt … I also use peat moss with good results a lot of times, but it has to be COMPLETELY dried out - usually at least a year old.

I was wondering if your sand has a smell like wet sand when its done?I tried and it smelled a little different I'm just trying it for the first time.I haven't caught anything with it but I haven't used it very long either.

I didn't notice anything at the time of making it, but I wasn't specifically really TRYING to, either. I did try to see if I noticed anything today and I can't smell anything unusual.

What did you do with the rubber gasket that comes with the mixer ? Leave it out? Also you work way to hard on trying to cool ur sand. I let mine tumble in the mixer until it’s about 70 degree Fahrenheit. I make 100 gal every year But my mix pooped so was thinking about getting one of these mixers but don’t know if I’ll lose dirt if I don’t put the seal in

I can't remember what I did on the gasket... I think I installed it, as I used it for about 10,000 lbs of concrete first.... And I tried letting it cool and just continue to tumble back when I first started doing it; maybe it's because I like to be a bit high on the wax ratio or something, but I came back to a huge clump stuck to everything on the inside of the mixer... had to get a hammer and screwdriver to chip away at the insides.

@@StaggsintheWildok thanks and best thing to do is let build up and leave it it won’t hurt nothing I have the same thing but it works so much better than trying to spread it all out and keep mixing it

ever thought of using a rake to spread and mix the sand?

If your sand is wet it cooks out really fast. Just heat it up until the moisture is gone. Keep it moving of coarse.

Could you put smaller clumps in your bucket and just break them up as you go?

I like waxed dirt better but sometime you gotta make do with what you have.

Please respond i want to start trapping and i have 2 dogs and i have snow in my yard would i be able to use dog pee for lure or trap scent

Sure you would! Introducing any foreign K9 scent in the "territory" of a predator is going to provoke a response.

HELP!!! I am a new trapper, trying to control coyote population on my hunting land. I made 5 gallons of your wax sand and it seemed to turn out great. My problem is that it just runs thru the screen of the pan cover. Any suggestions? I did attempt to make waxed dirt but my soil is all clay and did not turn out well at all. I could not keep it from forming large clumps no matter what I did. Thanks for your help.

Sounds like you’re thin on the wax to me possibly … but sand doesn’t pack near as well as dirt, for sure.

Ok, since you bow hunt, i need help. Wanting my first hunting bow for deer. Ive nver had a bow. Whats a good bow, looking to spend 1-2k. I know NOTHING. My height is 5 ft 11 and im 180 lb.

I HIGHLY, HIGHLY recommend finding a competent bow shop in your area and going to see them. You’ll need to have your draw length measured and ensure you purchase a bow that fits YOU, and not force yourself to fit a bow. There’s lots that go into it and personally instruction/help is going to get you off to a much better start.

Why not leave it in the mixer running until it cools off? I know it takes time but seems like it ×ould be easir.

I tried that. I was pretty sure I explained in the video that as it cooled it dried in huge hard clumps - in the mixer, even with it still on snd tumbling.

2 tips for better results. 1 Sift the sand BEFORE you throw it in the mixer. 2 keep the mixer running and let the waxsand cool down in the mixer to get the best results.

The sand is perfectly sifted before I throw it in … it’s sand. Commercially bagged. There’s nothing to sift out if it 😊 And I explain in the video that allowing the sand to cool down in the mixer resulted in HUGE clumps in the final product when I tried that; that’s why I spread it out on the tarp so I can work out the clumps as it cools.

@@StaggsintheWild That's why you keep the mixer running to keep the sand rolling around till it has cooled down. Stop the machine too early and it will clump up.

@@MsUltrafox lol,, that WAS with the mixer running… I let it cool completely down as the drum turned and it just ended up in huge clumps. My wax/sand ratio might be a bit higher than yours producing a little different results.

Couldn't you just keep rotating it in the mixer while it cooled?

If rain permeates your trap set and soaks all in throughout your trap bed and then temps drop below freezing, your whole set will be one block of ice and animals can dance on your trap and it’s not going off. That’s why I showed the set that still worked at the beginning of the video even after it had rained nearly two inches the night before.

There has GOT to be a faster method than this wood planer....heat it up slightly....then grind it up.....this is very tedious....lets brain storm a quicker way....

Heat that wax up and it's just gonna gum up in whatever you try to break it down in... wood planer, grinder, whatever.
