How To Make Vaseline Saturated Cotton Balls For Fire Starter

I don't presaturate mine. I just carry the bulk Vaseline and cotton balls. Seeing how wet the tinder is determines how much Vaseline I use. Sometimes, it requires a big gob on the cotton, other times, just a smear. I also like the option of having untreated cotton balls for the fire roll.

hey David! why don't you pre-saturate it? is it because it can evaporate over time? i had that experience when i put those cottonballs into - what it thought to be - watertight ziplockbags.

I was told chapstick would do the same. I have yet to try it. If true, it would save you from carrying the big tub of vaseline.

I wouldn't mind carrying some cotton balls already saturated and some that are not. A saturated piece of cotton won't fire roll.

I saturated cotton balls with Vaseline and stufdfed them in large plastic drinking straws. I cut the straws in 3" pieces first and after I stuffed them I folded the ends over and put them in a empty pill bottle. They work great and you can carry as many of them as you can stuff in the pill bottle. I just lite the end of the cotton with a Striker of choice and I have a few minutes of fire so I can start a camp fire.

I still carry matches in my survival pack but my go to fire starting method is a cotton ball with Bag Balm and a ferro rod. Like you, I carry a few saturated cotton balls, and some dry ones and a small tin of Bag Balm. I like it better than Vaseline because it works so well on dry skin and lips so the saturated cotton balls do double duty. Thanks for all you do!

Another us David for the Vaseline is on the blade of your knife been using it now for over 65 years as did my grand father before me. the only rust issue I have ever had is opening the box of a new knife to find light rust on both high end knives and the lower end . Happy Trails and keep on firing things up .

Nice video David, I make mine a little different. I wear a pair of latex gloves ( like the ones at the doctors office ) so I don't get Vaseline all over my hands. Then I scoop out some Vaseline and work it into a cotton ball really good. After that I put it in an Altoids tin. When the tin is full I ran a band of black electrical tape around it to seal it up. I keep a tin of them in my truck, as well as in my hunting backpack, and my travel vest. When I'm ready to use one I spread the cotton ball out to expose the fibers and it lights right up with my Ferrocerium Rod. JT

After the cotton balls are saturated in Vaseline, I rub charcoal dust/chunks around the ball to keep them from being sticky and give a little more burn time.

  • @caniaccharlie

The vaseline cotton balls seem like the best firestarters to me. For the price and longevity that they will burn, two or three would dry out most any appropriate tinder I would think. I carry about 40 cotton balls and a couple fat wood sticks in an old water tight phone case in my pack always.

Some people will use the ciricular cotton discs for makeup removal. Soak them in vaseline, then dip them in melted wax for a couple coatings to really waterproof them.

David, this is Francesco, a big fan of yours in Italy. Congratulations for your amazing work! I was thinking: in a real survival situation where there’s no way to create fire and then ashes (ashes that would be used to create the next fire with the fire roll technique) do you think (already tried?) that sand would work instead ashes inside the cotton roll to generate friction? I was imagining a scenario like castaway on a island where you can find fibers, wood and sand but no ashes. What do you think? Best Regards from Italy! Thank you Sir!!

  • @DavidWestBgood2ppl

Hello Francesco, I've tried very fine sand before with no luck. The punk from driftwood wood, seashells ground to powder on rough rock, or ground up barks will fire roll.
