How to make Transformer Covers // DIY tube amp transformer enclosures

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

In this video I describe why you may need transformer covers for your tube amp projects and how to make them with some basic tools.
I would be a bit cautious using covers for power transformers especially if they are prone to run hot. Ventilation holes and monitor the temps would be recommended.
The shielding tape and paint as mentioned in this video works well in guitars and will work in these covers as well for shielding high frequencies. Lower frequencies may require different product like a nickel alloy tape or paint. I welcome your comments if it works for you or not!

Transformer cover should be made of steel (better, permalloy) to block electromagnetic field. This is one of the most important reasons for shielding.

Interesting approach! Copper shielding works well to stop RF and high frequency EMI, but is very poor at low frequency magnetic field shielding. You can get nickel alloy (even Mu Metal) tapes that do a much better job to prevent inter-transformer interference.

Thanks for commenting. I’ve see you can get nickel impregnated paint as well. I may have to look into it. Cheers.

Ideal will be over 2 mm of steel, which attenuate around 35-40 db at 50 Hz, more better...Steel tube, if you are ok with metalwork.

The only affirdable efficient shield is a one piece 304 antimagnetic stainless steel box. Never think to stick a cover wuth glue. Aluminum and iron are magnetic friendly metals. Won't work as shields.

These outputs are a special/limited wind Mike did many years ago. They are Parafeed, 3K 4 & 8 ohm good for 8 watts, loosely based off of a TFA-2004. I’ve had them for a while… I jumped on them while he had them available. I’ve purchased a lot of iron from Mike. Great stuff.

Thank you for the tutorial and inspiration. Should I be worried about my transformers not getting any ventilation if I cover them with DIY covers?

  • @MikeFreda

Thanks for commenting. Yes, it is a consideration. I find that most output transformers and chokes if sized right don't get that hot. Power transformers can and do get hot so you have to be careful there. You can install ventilation holes or a mesh top to help with that. I typically don't to cover my power transformers. Cheers.

I'm trying to shield an old turntable motor. You talk about copper 'tape' or metal paint.....could you be more specific if i make a wooden box? For shielding, does it matter if the box is steel or aluminum?

  • @MikeFreda

Thanks for commenting. I put links in the description of the paint and tape. Make the box to suit and line the entire inside with either. The tape is much cheaper, the paint is easier to apply. If you made it out of metal, I’d go with steel. The iron content in the steel has better shielding properties.

@@MikeFreda Thank you! I laminated a galvanized piece to the platter, exactly the size of a record......made by some HAVC guys out of ducting material. It works, but was only meant as a temporary measure. I always wanted to make a metal box or something similar, so I can restore my platter back to its original configuration.

@@MikeFreda I am beginner for Tube Amp, and I have my old retired friend talk to me can do the special made Transformer for me , thus I saw that no wonder you said it is hand-made, since he has been working on coils and transformmer over 30 years, I knew him before 1997! yes, very old friend. Thanks for sharing of how you do that and explain the transformer cover!! If you need contact , I can tell you his website by PM. Not polite to put here if other DIYers if want it. :)

I clicked thinking you had a home shop friendly way of making the metal coil caps like on the transformer in the middle of your 6l6 project. Your just making boxes, I feel like everybody that's scratch building a tube amp knows how to make a box. I hope I'm not being ignorant, that's not my intent.

True, it’s just boxes but sometimes people just need a point in the right direction to inspire them. That being said, what are metal could caps toy are referring to? The bell ends? If so, should you like to know how to make them? That is something I can do. Cheers.

@@MikeFreda That transformer in the middle has no exposed coils or connections, smooth round metal covers bolted to the cores. Really common on guitar amp transformers. For interference I presume but it feels like the classic look and leaves it safe for inside on the outside presentation. Is bell end the right name? Sounds like a penis joke. They are stamped sheet metal, I could make them myself with square corners but not the right look. Ron Covell could make them perfect but his techniques are a bit much for the average home gamer. I could 3D print them and copper tape the inside and nobody would know the difference, but I would.
