How to Make Traditional Matcha + Easy Way to Make Matcha Green Tea

How to prepare matcha green tea the traditional way and easy way.
What is Matcha? it's a finely ground young tea leave that is grown under the shade, this growing under the shade forces it to produce more chlorophyll making its distinct bright green colour. It is highly associated with Japan although it is consumed in many other Asian countries.
In this video you will see 2 methods of making matcha green tea, the first will be the traditional way and then followed by a super simple way using a milk frother.

Just a couple of things. When you pour the water out of the chawan you need to dry it thoroughly before adding the matcha. The bowl needs to be quite warm and the matcha needs time to breath and release its aroma in the dry warmth before you add any water. Whilst the water is warming the bowl you need to put the chasen whisk (whisk side down) in the hot water so that the the prongs open and straighten and are moistened by the water. You were using this whisk with the prongs still curled which won't work as well. You need to warm your cup with hot water and then dry it before pouring the matcha from the chawan. I know these things aren't necessary but its a ritual that makes for a tastier cup of matcha.

Watching you make matcha using the traditional method is funny to me because it's very similar to old school wet shaving techniques - using warm water to first heat a bowl, mixing the right ratio of soap to water, whisking, adding more water as necessary, getting the right foam. Sometimes there is value in the ritual of tradition, it's a calming process and forces you into the present. Although in a rush electric appliances are preferred!

But you need to dissolve the matcha really well before adding a lot of water and believe me if you don't know what you are doing, it will not turn out as well. If not dissolved properly, your matcha tea will be a suspension of matcha particles which feels sandy in the mouth. When you dissolve the matcha in a proper way, it results in smoother texture.

Blew my mind!! I have a frother that I rarely use and now it’s going to get a good workout, one question, should I use the lid or not? (as in your video...)

Yowza. I'm all for tradition. However, if there's an easier way to do something and have the same result, I say heck yes. Just used our Nespresso milk frother as per the video. I do not expect to be using the bamboo whisk, unless I'm trying to impress someone with my culinary skills. Wonderful!🤜🏼🖐🏼

there is something beautiful about the traditional way to make matcha tea, but I very rarely do it that way since I thought of chucking it in a milk frother. I love quick #matcha too

I really appreciate how you added link for the ilk foamers as well. How many cups of matcha tea a day would be considered healthy?

This is exactly what I was looking for. I travel a lot and was looking for a "simple" way to start making matcha tea. I had been researching that frother machine method but everyone was making lattes. I just want a simple way to make matcha tea. Who knew someone 5 years in the past was thinking about me and my problem 😆 🤣 😂 😹
