Absolutely tomato-tastic! Pom-adorable (ok, I'll stop). I think this type of communal activity would only serve to benefit the community cohesion; and you get passata for the rest of winter! We don't have this in the uk? Do we? Perhaps scrumping apples in somerset? Tony

tonydeltablues It's actually surprising that we don't really have pressure canning in the UK. People grow vegetables but don't quite know what to do with the harvest, I would of thought if you grow vegetables you would want to preserve them for the rest of the year.

Still plenty of good communities in the UK, swapping, making and sharing, you wouldn't know about them because if you did they wouldn't last long. Most small towns and villages have been bought out by people who have city wages who cant stand the city (atleast in my experience)

That's what a lot of Italian families do, especially in the south. Virgin olive oil in November, and tomato sauce in August. It's both a family rite and a tradition and you make them to last for the whole year to come.

I grew up in Toronto too! I can remember the Italian Grannies buying tomatoes and peppers in the St. Lawrence market, biting off a bit of pepper to test them! My grandma lived near Bloor St, did her shopping there, and there were so many little grocers thrived because Italians bought their goods there and homemade everything . I miss all the. Baskets of fresh produce here, in UK😢

This brings back such fond memories. I'm Italian but living abroad and I remember going back home for the summer and making fresh sauce for the winter. At the end of the day my aunt would bring fresh pasta she had made earlier to cook it and try the freshly made sauce!!! L'italia é il paese del cibo buono e della dolce vita!

Can't believe some people don't realize that vine ripened tomatoes picked at the optimum time of ripeness that you grow yourself without pesticides or other chemicals (or that you buy from a local organic producer). and that you can without additives are going to not only taste better but are better for you. That's not to mention how much this builds community and family cohesiveness.

I’m an American but my grandfather was from Italy. This video brought me back to my childhood! Every summer we’d put bushels and bushels of tomatoes through the food mill to have passata all winter long, and then my mom would can! So much fun and so much work!

Passata making sessions, that sounds like so much fun❣️ When I was a kid, I didn’t even know what passata was. Tomato sauce wasn’t common here in Norway at all, but at the end of the 70’s, it started changing, first came pizza, which was Norwegianized, of course, then we started to slowly changed our «Spaghetti and Million Beef» (Spaghetti and minced beef in brown gravey/sauce), tomato was added, and finally we went all the way to Spaghetti Bolognese and barely any makes Spaghetti in brown sauce anymore. Too bad, because it is really good! It shouldn’t be one or the other, it should be both. When I saw a TV show a few years ago, I learned that Italian grannies even used to make it - I thought it just was something Norweegians made, because they didn’t have tomatoes. Well, we still have a powder-sauce (which you add water or water/milk/cream to) which is a brown sauce with tomato (puré?) added, in stores (Toro brand, called «Kjøttdeigsaus»/«Minced Meat Sauce). Personally I don’t use powder sauces though, I had to buy one of that sauce a few years ago, a bit nostalgic. It’s not bad, it is quite good, I just don’t feel much need for it, I like making food from scratch. If I don’t have the energy, I just make a quick from scratch meal, like e.g. full grain pasta with a creamy mushroom sauce topped with nutritional yeast and a couple of veggie powders (dehydrated/powdered veggies, yummy and full of nutrients). Takes less than 15 minutes. I do buy basic tomato sauce though. I would have loved to make though, if I could get as good and affordable tomatoes as the Italians (or could have grown them myself). Or I buy Italian canned tomatoes, so happy we now get them, I gladly pay some more for that. I did cook BBQ sauce from scratch using Norwegian canned tomatoes though, and was surprised at how delicious it ended out, but I added quite a bit of sweetener to compensate, I didn’t use much real sugar though, I mostly used alternative sweeteners and it was great. I made it early in the summer and it’s already all used up, LOL... I for sure will do it again, I usually made BBQ sauce from ketchup with no sugar added, but since I saw how yummy it becomes when made from scratch, I for sure will make the ketchup too myself, it was soooo yummy with a little extra love, like balsamic and «white balsamic» vinegars in place of ordinary vinegars. Added a sweetness and depth I loved. YUM! OMG, it’s really late, almost midnight, but now I am really hungry, LOL... ☺️ I’ll climb off my soap box and make myself a little snack... ☺️🍅🍜🥤

Great videos! I love your channel, and this video in particular reminds me all the times I saw my parents and my family gathering together to prepare the tomato 'passata'. They were all waking up at 5am, to collect the fresh tomatoes, than they were boiling them, and my task was to fill the bottles and close them. Every bottle should have two leaves of basil, so they'd be more tasty. I do not live in Italy anymore, but my parents are still preparing it every year, and I do not miss any chance of having some passata to bring with me to Switzerland when I go visiting them.

You're right old style is better, but the "cities style" point you made is a fallacy most who live in the country side eat fast food and processed garbage because corporations have bought everything and small businesses can't fight back since their is such poverty. Most cities have the high end restaurants and traditions with less big corporations since wall mart is banned is places like New York. You want less fast food? move to a city.

True. We did here at home in Northeastern Italy, my wife and me. The problem was that there was a lot of water, after all the process of bottling, sterilizind and settling but we did not know this simple procedure of squeezin the excess water prior to passing through the machine. In any case tomatoes in North Italy, in those years where winters were very cold and summers quite mild, did not reach the quality of those in the southern part of the peninsula, as for the majority of vegetables. Ours were winter resistant, poor and less diverse.

See, i like this simple way of life, i know it can be hard work, but everyone seems to be enjoying each others company as they work together. I am 55 and i just recently started using a computer appx. A year ago, and i still have never owned a cell phone. I watch younger generations sitting in the same room texting each other instead of conversing, and i do not think i will ever understand that. Mention work and they run for the hills, no community activities similar to this anymore, it is sad

I’m 55 too (this year though), and I also love much of this. I started using computers in 1982 though, got my first cell phone when GSM became available and affordable in 92 or 93 and went online in 1995. I don’t see why it has to be one or the other, it’s great to combine and modern technology has made it a lot easier to share and keep traditions alive, something KZread (and other social media) is a great witness of. I love that we can use social media this way! Glad to hear you finally started using a computer, Steve, it’s a great tool! Greetings from 🇳🇴. 👏😊

Sry for italian I try to translate with google; this video made me the same effect like videos about harvest, I'm not more young and I'm back a child, I remember everything; family, relatives, friends, before the "work" (so to speak, that job was a joy) and then food, wine, music and dancing all together(I would pay gold to relive that days). Thanks to those who thought, worked and created a channel like this.

Io sono italiano e anche qui si fa così! Solo i bruciatori per bollire i pomodori sono diversi, più compatti. Bello vedere come certe cose non cambiano!!!

I grew up doing this with corn in the Midwest! I had an aunt and uncle who would plant 3 acres of sweet corn next to their grain corn fields and the whole extended family would get together for a weekend and bag 100s of quarts of corn (best way to keep sweet corn is to cook it, cut it off the cob, bag it up and freeze it).
