Welcome to Moat Cottage Homesteading, I'm Elissa and here at Moat Cottage, we raise and grow and process some of our own free range meat, organic vegetables and fruit. We grow all of our herbs for both eating and medicinal purposes as well as hunt, fish and forage.
Our goal each season is to preserve our produce for the year ahead by canning, dehydrating, fermenting and freezing and we work on being prepared for emergency situations.
Avoiding single use plastic, chemicals and artificial fragrances is important to us and we are trying to live an older style life, balanced with this modern world.

I wish I had been home-schooled. My mother and grandmother would have taught us about tinctures and natural cures.
I wish we had more information about native plants because there has to be so many plants we could be using with the same properties.

Great video, thank you! Thanks for mentioning the longevity of the tinctures. A year ago I made a St John’s Wort tincture from plants I grew, and it’s such a deep bright red! So beautiful. But I did wonder how long it kept for.. it’s all in 100 proof vodka. So that’s good to know it will be good for a while yet!

@MoatCottage
Жыл бұрын
Hello Megan and Welcome! I don’t recommend Comfrey on open wounds or open skin because it heals too fast and can actually heal an infection under the skin. For open skin I use St. John’s Wort tincture or Calendula, Yarrow (flower tinctures) or Echinacea (root or flower tincture) as they kill infections and once wound is sealed safely, I use comfrey if I need to.

Thank you for the wonderful video! What is the reason the tincture needs to be mixed with water? I imagine without it, it would have a longer shelf life and possibly even have a stronger effect. Another question, would the herbal spray tincture last longer than 3 days if kept in the fridge? Or is the 3 days already based on storing it in the fridge? I would prefer to make one large batch that can last long and is ready to use, for convenience, so I would appreciate you sharing your insight on if that’s possible and how we might be able to do that!
@MoatCottage
Жыл бұрын
I agree with you, mixing a small batch with water and it only lasting 3 days is time consuming but it makes the tincture go further. The alcohol is expensive! I do use tinctures straight/neat - not mixed with water for topical use and have had great success. The tincture just runs out quicker and I have to make bigger batches of some herbs.

New to your channel.…🙌🏻….Thank you for the tutorial..My question is from my understanding that Comfrey root is potent at any stage (unless the ground is frozen) as the tap root goes several feet into the ground bringing up vitamins and trace minerals at all times that most all plants don’t have the ability to reach…I’m excited to make this spray as my comfrey and yarrow are both just starting their growing season a few weeks ago..I only grow Resina calendula as it’s the most medicinal …I alway though that you needed to let a tincture sit 6-8 weeks before straining is it different in your Country and that is how all the tinctures/infusions are done there? Also how to make a s mask of the comfrey root..lol..do you make it a paste?
@MoatCottage
Жыл бұрын
Welcome to Most Cottage, 6-8 weeks is a decent amount of time to brew tinctures and it doesn’t hit to leave the plant matter in until you actually need the tincture. If you need the tincture in a hurry, is when You can strain some out sooner. Comfrey root is potent all year around, harvesting before new spring growth is when it’s at its absolute prime.
@MoatCottage
Жыл бұрын
The comfrey mask I make is just blended comfrey tuber, applied to dry face - no water as it becomes slippery and won’t stick on. It’s non drying so can leave on for as long as you feel like, but at least until it has dried. I peel off, into the compost and not the sink. Then wash off with help of a face washer. Research if it’s suitable for any health challenges user may have and medications they are on. I hope this helps.

Only if you think a cat/dog has pee’d on it! Otherwise, don’t bother as the alcohol will kill any bacteria and fungus on the plant.

I have a steamer juicer, its from Finland...it has three chambers...bottom for water, middle is large where steam comes thru but has distilling chamber that catches ESSENCE, as its distilled thru steam... Above that is basket where you put plant or fruit in... My question is .... How can i use the liquid essence from say comphrey or whatever herbs etc ? Or where can i find that info? I tried making salve regular recipes didnt work... Other utubers never answered... This is excellent way to get oure essence of herb...
@jrobertgadams7766

Salve is make with butters, oils, waxes ( like beeswax). There is no water in salve. and Essence like you call it, is from water (steamer juicer ). You could use those 'essences' to make a lotion or a cream . it will go into the water part of the recipe. hope that helps.

Question: at the bottom of my tincture, (after the 8 weeks), there appears to be some sediment at the bottom, even after I strained the lemon balm out. Should I strain it again thru cheesecloth, or is the sediment meant to be there? I appreciate any help here.
@MoatCottage
2 ай бұрын
Hi Anna, if you used a fine strainer then the amount of sediment is perfectly fine. I don’t use the cheesecloth for tinctures. 😊
Quick question… will using 80% alcohol help extract more of the herbs active compounds?
@RewiredforJoy
4 күн бұрын
Herbs have both water soluble and alcohol soluble properties...so using alcohol that is close to 50/50 is best to get a balanced medicine 😊
I dehydrated all my herbs first because i don't want any moisture making the batch go rancid. Do I have to worry about this with the alcohol, or is there enough alcohol for the tincture to be shelf stable?
@MoatCottage
Жыл бұрын
When I’m making tinctures with alcohol, it’s best if you can use fresh herbs where possible, they don’t go rancid in alcohol and could potentially stay in the alcohol for years and be fine. When infusing herbs into oil, i prefer to use dried herb as they can easily go mouldy with the moisture in the herbs when not dried.

I've made 2 Mullien Tintures using Vodka, with foraged Mullien. Found one in Spring and one mid Summer. First batch was rich amber but 2nd one barely shows any color at all. Any ideas what may have happened?
@jeffmeyers3837
Жыл бұрын
@Debbie Did you use the Mullein leaf, or root for the tinctures you made? It's best to harvest leaves in Spring, and in the morning time. If you harvested from a Mullein plant that was on it's 2nd year of life, much of the energy is going into producing a long stalk, flowers and seed. In that case the leaf would not be as potent in the Summer.
