Ғылым және технология

Brave is a really solid choice for a daily driving browser once some tweaks are made to enhance privacy and security.

    I'm amazed that I do many of the same things in my Brave browser settings that you do. The ad blockers don't seem to work at all in the Mac version of Brave. They do work perfectly in Linux, however. Again, I will study this video at length; there are a few points that need time to sink in. However...it's Christmas, so I'm off to sleep. I hope you and your enjoyed a "Mele Kalikimaka" today! Aloha.

    Hey Jim, I hope you had a good Christmas! There's definitely some issues with the support for ad blockers on Apple and Android because of their app restrictions. Brave on iOS seems to work fine with blocking ads but I haven't tried it on Mac yet.

    @@KenHarrisio In Sonoma on my M1, I can throw ublock Origin, Adblocker Ultimate on there. No dice. I wonder if the Brave browser for macOS is based on WebKit rather than Chromium, I've heard tell of things like that, but I haven't wrapped my head around them. Meanwhile...it's back to Debian for me! Take it easy!

    Yep! I get the same! And, yes... Brave...and Firefox...etc... are all based on WebKit. If I don't want ads on my M1 Mac...I have to boot it into Asahi Linux. That solves the ad problem nicely.

    @@donatedflea A friend's Windows 11 install also has ublock, Adblocker Ultimate, Privacy Badger, and Ghostery. No dice...still gets ads. Mystifying... I've long since moved all my old Windows PCs to Linux. That works. NO ads in Brave or Librewolf.

    One of the things that prevents me from coming 100% to Brave is the PiP Window. Looks like Brave won't allow to have multiple PiP windows open at the same time AND there is no mute button on the pip window either, like in LibreWolf.

    The "Auto-redirect AMP pages" under Shields is actually so that if you are on a desktop and click on a link that someone has copy/pasted from their phone to you in a chat window or email, your desktop browser will auto load the desktop version of that page rather than the mobile version of that page. If you disable it, you will get the mobile version of a site on your desktop and it's not formatted for a desktop monitor.

    @@KenHarrisio LOL me neither. When I first came across that setting in Brave a few months ago, I did a bit of searching and learned that "AMP" stands for "Accelerated Mobile Pages", originally created by Google. Thankfully there are no security issues associated with the setting, so it's perfectly safe to leave the setting on (redirects to PC version of a website). But I got a lot out of this video and tweaked some of my settings!

    Hey question what do you use for cloud storage and replacement if you do. For Google drive, Google docs etc? I find that the hardest thing because I’m a UIUX designer and I need cloud syncing capabilities for files and folders and images

    I'm using Google Drive for the time being, with at least one other backup option depending on the type of data it is. Just so I can have a sense of where to go with recommendations, are you looking for something with more privacy and/or security?

    @@BleakDeath There's a couple different options depending on how much inconvienence you are willing to go through. You could stay on a main cloud provider (GDrive, OneDrive, etc) and encrypt everything locally using Cryptomator before it gets uploaded. This will add some friction to your process though it's not unmanageable. The other option would be to use something more privacy respecting. Sync advertises themselves as using zero knowledge encryption, though I haven't used the service or researched it enough to verify that. Other good options are Proton Drive and Tresorit.

    What do you recommend for android phones and also password managers. Hope you had a good day

  • @KenHarrisio

    @KenHarrisio

    For Android, the Google Pixel is my top choice, mostly because of the updates that are available without having to wait for another party (i.e. Samsung) to push them out and also because they don't get a bunch of bloat preinstalled. If you want a solid paid option for password managers, 1Password is solid and a good open source option is BitWarden.

    Click on the three dots at the bottom right and select settings, then scroll down to the display section and select the "new tab page" option. You can only choose between sponsored and default images right now. You won't be able to select a custom image.

    A VPN is absolutely the best option you have to protect against that issue. PrivacyGuides has three good recommendations on providers that passed stringent criteria to be selected.

    @@KenHarrisio Thank you so much, I use a vpn to encrypt traffic but can't the attacker still do something bad like port forward my computer through the router or is the most damage they can do is see my traffic?

  • @KenHarrisio

    @KenHarrisio

    5 ай бұрын

    They'll be able to see your traffic going to the VPN provider, but nothing else. As far as ports, you have a secure tunnel going between your computer to the VPN provider, which protects against ports forwarded from the router. The exception to this would be if you had anything ran through a split tunnel (excluded from VPN protection).
