How to make shimmering, metallic watercolours with just two ingredients

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

This video accompanies my blog post on how to make shimmering, metallic watercolour paints using just mica and gum Arabic. You can also add a drop of glycerin for a paint that is less likely to crack and rewets more easily.
About 4 minutes in, there's an example of how mica powders and gum arabic form a non-Newtonion fluid as they only turn to liquid when you hit it or slam it down on the table.

The banging it on the table to make it liquid was truly science in action, love it!! 🎨

Thank you for actually pointing out the obvious! I have watched soooo many videos of how to mix this properly, I also have the cheap affordable zip sealed 52 colour set, I'm sorry if that reads bad, but I can't afford the brand names already bonded! But I couldn't understand why some of the packets were half empty! I now know it's a weight thing and not a volume thing The Gum Arabic is 1-4 ratio not 1 scoop to 4 scoops ratio, It all needs measured in weight 👌 Good call btw. I have tried Everything and failed, even the 'hairspray fix' 🙄 but you just fixed it all....thank you sooo much haha 😉

Very nice! Thanks for the demonstration, I wanted to try to make some shimmery colours, got the mica powders but didn’t really know what to do next without investing into a whole range of extra products, so I like the method you show that only involves liquid gum Arabic. Thank you so much! 😃 will try it tomorrow 😊

I’m glad you found it helpful! Do take a look at the blog post I wrote about making the shimmering watercolours. I found that by adding a little bit of glycerin to the liquid gum Arabic improved the rewetting properties of the watercolours.

A tiny bit of honey could be put in along with glycerine for rewettability. These are beautiful!

This was SO helpful! I would like to have glycerin available too, but there are a lot of varieties out there and I'm not really sure which one is the "right" one?

I’m afraid I’m not an expert in making watercolours. This was my first attempt. I’ve used PVA to make a kind of acrylic paint. Others use gum tragacanth but gum Arabic, along with glycerin or honey are the most popular mediums.

Can you use this paint over polymer clay and can you seal it?

  • @KathrynCraftmehappy

I don’t think watercolours are the best paints to use on polymer clay as it doesn’t absorb liquids. I have made shimmering paints by mixing mica powder with PVA glue. I haven’t tried it but it feels like this would be better on polymer clay.
