I got really worried when you mentioned water to rice ratios because I see plenty of other videos trying to use the same stovetop ratios for the rice cooker. I was relieved to basically hear you say "trust the engineers who built the darn thing" by explaining the lines

Yes! Each rice cooker has its own dimensions so trusting the lines is the best option. It's not a 1:1 ratio or 2:1 like the rice box (a little less actually). thank you for your kind comment!

That small cup that comes with cooker is 6oz instead of standard 8oz cup, I don't use it at all - just add 24oz of rice for 4 cup water line

Thank you so much for explaining the ratio of uncooked rice in the special rice measuring cup provided with the rice cooker to the water line inside the cooking pot. This isn't mentioned at all in the manual that came with my Toshiba rice cooker (TRSH01).

Rice can be tricky; I am testing a low GI, white rice from India, but sold anywhere in US. As with any white rice that I cooked before I always use 1 portion of rice to 2 of water. I noticed the rice came out a little hard. Next batch I added 0.25% more water. 300 grams of rice to 675 grams of water. It came out okay but I could add more water. Um more batch of 1 to 2.5. 300 grams of rice to 750 grams of water. I ended up with one portion of rice to 3.75 of water. Here is the final recipe. 300 g of rice to 1125 of water, 23 g of sazón seasoning and 40 ml of vegetable oil. Everything weighed in a precise scale, when I wash the rice, it gets heavier, so I deduct the water. For 300 grs of rice after washed it weighs about 350. I take off 50 grs from 1125. This rice comes out fluffy and not sticky. I remove the rice from the rice cooker and let it cool off then store it in small plastic containers. Dont let it cool off in the rice cooker because it will stick together. The rice is low GI and using more water. I assume that I am eating less carbs for each gram of cooked rice since I am diabetic. India rice can be found on Amazon or India groceries stores. My next test will be with regular white rice and add more water to find out if it won't get sticky.

I still don’t understand the cups-to-people ratio. I saw a rice cooker I’m thinking of buying. The description online says it’s a 4-cup rice cooker. Does that mean you pour in 4 cups or you end up with 4 cups? How many portions does it serve?

  • @MOMables

I depends on the rice cooker, but it usually mean you'll end up with 4 cups of cooked rice.

Hi. I am new to rice cookers too. I was given an old one. The idea is you don't need to think about ratios. You use the rice cup, 180 ml not 240 ml, for the rice. And the numbers on the inside for how much water to put. I put in 2 cups of rice , so I fill the water to the number 2. Hope this helps.
