The best removable arm rod I own is one created by a company for a puppet that used a Ball joint socket. the rod moves great and 100% impossible to fall off. Never had a problem with that style if that helps anyone. Still looking into finding a similar ball joint to make for myself.

Wow, I love that advice! Next time I build an arm rod puppet, I'll just do what you do and make the entire arms removable instead! I'll do the same thing with the legs so as to avoid the legs flopping up and down on camera when I have my puppet character jump or dance. But in the event that I do come across a scenario in which I want my puppet character's hand(s) to sit in the middle of the couch, I would just make two sets of arms, one pair with rods, and the other pair without rods. Again, the same thing with the legs in case I need to film a scene where I need the puppet's full body to show. And maybe another set of legs with rods in the whole leg if I need a scene with only the legs showing. Anywhoosies, if you got the time, I was wondering if you could make a tutorial on how to make a flexible mouth plate, kinda like Kermit's; last time I made a flexible mouth plate, I just used foam because it was the only flexible material I knew what to use, but I have this little gut feeling that's telling me I'm not supposed to use foam. Besides, it makes my hand hot after a while of performing.

  • @petarpavlovic

I mean there is a really easy way to do it but you need to change the way you build the arm, so you put the wire part of the hand and put it in the foam hand and cut the rest of the rod and then just put the hand and arm in flece or fur or what ever and then stich it do the whole process and than get another two rods and bend them in a p but it's more like a u whit one side longer and the shorter part is almost touching the longer one but there is a very small gap that's Les than a centimetar, and you're basicallyone you only put it over the hand between the hand and the rest of the arm and you're done, you can remove the arm roads and put them back on, the only bad thing is that it's visable on the arm so I guess you win some you lose some

Rather than remove the entire arm, I just slip the hand into a slit into the glove, pin it close, and there's an instant live-hand version - I'm sure it wouldn't be affective with a fabric like fleece, but works great for fur. But, prior to this video, one of the only other tips available out there for removable arm rods was similar to the first technique with the snaps, but instead of snaps, the idea was to use double-face tape . . . I tried it, and the results left a lot to be desired; double-face tapes seems to like to stick more when you don't want it to, but not stick very well when you want it to.

@@PuppetNerd I realized a potential method that gives a very solid attachment and prevents the slippage you noted here. My idea involves making a slotted bolt (or threaded rod) with nut as the attach point for the arm rod to lock it in place. Doesn't have to be metal, nylon is light but strong and would work great. 1) Drill a slot at the tip of the bolt wide enough to get the rod through. 2) Drill a hole inline with the slot just past the slot, slightly smaller than the width of the rod and hook. 3) Slip the rod hook into the hole, other part of the rod rests in the slot 4) Lock the rod in place with a locking nut. Since the distance to the hole is slightly less than the rod to hook length, the nut puts compression on the two parts of the rod, making it much more difficult for the rod to pull out unless the nut is backed off. It also prevents rotation and can be easily removed when needed. If you want to make that even more robust, you could drill another hole perpendicular to the slot and use a cotter pin to prevent the nut from backing off the threads.

Great video! That looks like a much better way than what I did. I wanted removable arm rods to be able to replace the rods with other types of rods to (for example) hold specific items. I have a character that plays saxophone and had to make special rods for her to hold it. But the rods do indeed come out from time to time. Do you know of any good techniques to have characters hold all kinds of items? I’ve been giving that a lot of thought but couldn’t come up with anything better.

So I've been trying to make this web series with "living stuffed animals" so I've been buying doll patterns as my base for my puppets. They work for the most parts, but I was wondering if there is an easier way of accomplishing a well-functioning puppet while still maintaining the natural stuffed animal look. (Mostly because the arms are usually too short for much dynamic movement, but when I make the arms longer, the rest of it looks weird.

Was max made pre removable arm technique as he did not have that option over the removable arm rod option? If not, why not? Or was he the reason you dislike the removable rods? Soooo much curiosity over one puppet rod choice, god I’m nosey. 🤣

Like I said in the video it was because of specific shot we needed in the film.

Adam Kreutinger sorry, I worded that wrong it seems, so a long winded version now. Everything you show seems to have evolved organically, part of the charm of watching, so I suppose I assumed the popper system became more standard along with interchangeable arms near the end of that process. Thus I was wondering if max was near the beginning of that evolution and part of the “how can I do that better” process. I imagined you would have chosen to create a rodded arm and a rod-less arm if the popper arm system had been discovered beforehand and the shot was in the script. Rather than using a system you do not like using. So the question is more about the evolution of interchangeable arms and the options that represents, than why did you do removable rods. I hope that makes the question clearer and not made things worse. By the way, Can you get puppet geeks? 🤣🤣🤣

It’s not so much an evolution as much as it just different techniques. I still use each of those techniques. It depends on what the puppet is for and what it has to do. My point in showing a those variations was not to show which it “best”, it’s to show different methods for different situations.

Adam Kreutinger ahhh, my mind made a pattern that was not there. 🙄 I should be used to that by now, but it still catches me out. Thank you.
