How to make realistic lightweight fake rocks

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

Learn how to carve and paint extruded polystyrene (XPS) to make cheap fake rocks for your model scene or diorama. These techniques can be used for model railways (N scale, HO scale, on30 and more) and also look great for gaming terrain such as wargaming tiles and boards. The final shots have some static grass added for extra realism. Foam rocks have an advantage over plaster moulded rocks because they are super lightweight ensuring your board or diorama doesn't become too heavy. The technique is also cheap and only requires basic paints and tools.

I'm gobsmacked!! I've been in the Hobby for more than 40 years, and have yet to try carving foam for rocks. From what I can see, it looks better than some work I've seen with plaster! I may finally have to give that a go. Although...... mate, if I carved as fast as you did, I'd end up chopping off all me fingers!!! 😝 Really, I've seriously got to try that.

Your task should be simple enough. Create three cement molds in slightly odd geometric shapes. Make three sets of casts, equal to the number of blocks of cement you want. Once they are hardened, attack with a hammer and chisel to create further random shapes in the cement. Then just stack them and secure them. Just my opinion, though.

By far the most realistic rocks I have seen in a long time . Your artistic talent is extraordinary right up there with the legendary John Allen and of course Malcolm Furlow . I am excited to creating mountains using your technique . Being a Garden railroader what can I do to make it more weather proof ? I'm pretty sure the foam won't deteriorate if I protect it from the sun . Life span should be 10 years before I plan on moving . Thank you for a inspiring video

That's an interesting challenge. I think the foam would hold up for a while with a decent exterior paint but it would be good to do a hot summer test first. If it were me I'd probably use a concrete stamping technique - I got into this several years ago - some photos here, it uses colour hardener powders used in driveway stenciling. elfshot.com/rockhollow/

Isn't 'Polyurethane' foam? Because I have Polystyrene and I also have XPS and neither of them have those physical properties. Just curious because I was trying to find some of the stuff your using.

This is using extruded polystyrene which is a much denser product than regular expanded Styrofoam. You can get it from insulation providers. I can't comment on whether the chemicals cause problems for aquatic animals.

if dense foam styro wasn't so expensive here, i would use that to built my full size rock wall/fountain - but i priced it yesterday for my attic insulation - 2" 4x8 is 75 bucks!! OUCH! may have to resort to the cheap bubble type with newspaper, chicken wire and aircrete blown onto it.

josh johnston - i know!! last summer i paid (actually without knowing) 68 per sheet... they didn't have the bubble stuff with the silver foil but the guy (over the phone) said we had this other stuff... never in a million years did i think it was that much so i didn't ask! people just don't use it for insulation for the most part, just the glass bat stuff. i only use the solid stuff now for making headstones at halloween - it carves really nice, and if you rig up a dimmer switch to plug a wood burning thing into, it's perfect for doing the letters - if you don't mind a little brain damage of course...
