How to make realistic lightweight fake rocks
Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль
Learn how to carve and paint extruded polystyrene (XPS) to make cheap fake rocks for your model scene or diorama. These techniques can be used for model railways (N scale, HO scale, on30 and more) and also look great for gaming terrain such as wargaming tiles and boards. The final shots have some static grass added for extra realism. Foam rocks have an advantage over plaster moulded rocks because they are super lightweight ensuring your board or diorama doesn't become too heavy. The technique is also cheap and only requires basic paints and tools.

Thanks for demonstrating this. I will be following a similar technique for a rock cutting I am constructing. This was. Really helpful. Thanks again Richard Uk
Finally I founded a simple video of how to carve a rock out of polystyrene😁 Great video, tips and instructions 👍
Great tutorial, did this technique on my layout and it came out phenomenal.
Simply amazing work! Thank you for the great tips and detailed instructions.
Great video, I was dreading this part of the layout, but you make it look so easy, thankyou
Amazing result! Even when you were carving I was convinced it was about 5 times size what it actually was! Needed a clear tutorial on this cause I'm making a cliff face miniature for a short film and this was super helpful!
Awesome!!!thanks!!! I'll try this technique for my terrarium
The rock structure looks very convincing. The colour is realistic. Thanks for the useful commentary.

Great video! Easy to follow and brilliant results.
I'm gobsmacked!! I've been in the Hobby for more than 40 years, and have yet to try carving foam for rocks. From what I can see, it looks better than some work I've seen with plaster! I may finally have to give that a go. Although...... mate, if I carved as fast as you did, I'd end up chopping off all me fingers!!! 😝 Really, I've seriously got to try that.

PacbeltRR i'm new to this. Did my first styrene foam canyon the other day. It's AMAZING how realistic the foam looks with just a little work.
Excellent video, thank you so much for sharing...lots of great tips and ideas!
I like how you carve foam! very nice tutorial
thanks for sharing that, some great tips there
That is some very nice N scale modelling. Cheers, Gary.
method I've found useful is to stab in at an angle with a chisel and twist, you get a really nice rough surface that looks really rock like.
Great video and great work. Looks awesome
Beautiful work, great video, thanks.
Great craftsmanship, my friend.
Very nice rocks, Rowan!
Looking very good.
Terrific artistry.
I have so many off cuts on insulation for this.. who needs plaster and it will be much lighter to transport.. top tips!!
Great video, nice and easy going, well done mate.
Nice work. Some of the most realistic looking rock work Ive seen would be great for aquarium back grounds.

It would look cool, just have to find out what products are safe for the water creatures!
Great job!!
Thanks for making this video! I tried a few other techniques before using yours and really like the results. I use a paintbrush and water to blend the joint compound.

Hello, amazing detail and tutorial, I wish more like you would make youtube videos, would this be ok to use within a terrarium? If coated with, for say, 2 layers of varnish? Thank you.
Excellent!
fantastic best ive seen
Question for you : How do you attain a natural looking smoke stack coming out of the funnels of the train set in diorama?
Epic man thanks!
This is really great! I make Lego movies, and these types of rocks would be perfect for mini film sets. Thanks a lot!

Thanks Josh, I'd love to see what you came up with for your films.
Thank you forn a well done video. Can you inform me of the music you used here in this video? Thank you.
Can you use your formula to paint plastic models to block light? Woodland Scenic Kit is like 12$ for 2 ozs.
thank you so much
Ps Sorry I liked the video a lot thank you for making it.
that was frikken awesome dude! I make waterfalls for a living and am trying to figure out how to incorporate a similar style but larger and with using concrete. You have an awesome eye for re creating nature!

How did your project go? I am trying to do the same, with real running water and a pool.

Your task should be simple enough. Create three cement molds in slightly odd geometric shapes. Make three sets of casts, equal to the number of blocks of cement you want. Once they are hardened, attack with a hammer and chisel to create further random shapes in the cement. Then just stack them and secure them. Just my opinion, though.

@@tylermcgonigal6031 sorry I didn’t see this question, I’m going well with this, I use big blocks of styrofoam to carve and spray concrete on

Both great ideas I don’t have anyway of spraying concrete but I could put styrofoam in the mold to save on material and weight thanks for the ideas
By far the most realistic rocks I have seen in a long time . Your artistic talent is extraordinary right up there with the legendary John Allen and of course Malcolm Furlow . I am excited to creating mountains using your technique . Being a Garden railroader what can I do to make it more weather proof ? I'm pretty sure the foam won't deteriorate if I protect it from the sun . Life span should be 10 years before I plan on moving . Thank you for a inspiring video

That's an interesting challenge. I think the foam would hold up for a while with a decent exterior paint but it would be good to do a hot summer test first. If it were me I'd probably use a concrete stamping technique - I got into this several years ago - some photos here, it uses colour hardener powders used in driveway stenciling. elfshot.com/rockhollow/
Isn't 'Polyurethane' foam? Because I have Polystyrene and I also have XPS and neither of them have those physical properties. Just curious because I was trying to find some of the stuff your using.
Can I use these in an aquarium? Why isn’t there lots of little styrofoam bits flying around? Like bean bag balls lol. Great use of foam!❤️🇦🇺

There's a similar technique using Styrofoam and concrete. I recommend looking up "diy 3D aquarium backgrounds" 👌

What did you use? I thought yours was styrofoam?

This is using extruded polystyrene which is a much denser product than regular expanded Styrofoam. You can get it from insulation providers. I can't comment on whether the chemicals cause problems for aquatic animals.
go over it with a heat gun to get rid of the little fuzzy bits
if dense foam styro wasn't so expensive here, i would use that to built my full size rock wall/fountain - but i priced it yesterday for my attic insulation - 2" 4x8 is 75 bucks!! OUCH! may have to resort to the cheap bubble type with newspaper, chicken wire and aircrete blown onto it.

rapunzel eh? Holy smokes! I buy 4x8 sheets of 1 inch thick for 30 dollars. 75 bucks? Houses must be expensive where you live!

josh johnston - i know!! last summer i paid (actually without knowing) 68 per sheet... they didn't have the bubble stuff with the silver foil but the guy (over the phone) said we had this other stuff... never in a million years did i think it was that much so i didn't ask! people just don't use it for insulation for the most part, just the glass bat stuff. i only use the solid stuff now for making headstones at halloween - it carves really nice, and if you rig up a dimmer switch to plug a wood burning thing into, it's perfect for doing the letters - if you don't mind a little brain damage of course...

josh johnston - actually that's not far off... 1" for 30... 2" would assumably be 60...
