I pretty much do this professionally at this point, and this is an incredibly good rundown on how to do PS1 style models, to the point, informative and everything. Though one thing I think might be good to mention is that PS1 games generally used 8 bit colours for textures, so textures should have 256 colour palette. (it could have more, but not really used)
@savagedregime8176
4 жыл бұрын
Also the textures themselves were often outright pixel art or at least some type of hybrid. When you take modern texture assets and downscale them to 90's resolutions they tend to get very blurry with no fine definitions which isn't really indicative of how textures looked back then. Artists back then would either design textures from scratch in the native resolution or at least do some touchups by hand on the downscaled source. You can inspect textures from games like MGS1 or Quake 1 to get a feel for this kind of look. It's also why I think these games look better without any texture filtering since it tends to smudge out those fine pixel features which were an intentional part of the look.
@westingtyler2
4 жыл бұрын
@@savagedregime8176 yes. In unity, setting in the texture importer the filtering mode to None/point filtering really makes the pixels look like pixels instead of blurred garbage. bilinear/trilinear looks like puke, and not the good kind of ps1 puke, but the bad kind of 1999 pc graphics kind of puke.
@OpenMawProductions
3 жыл бұрын
Yeah, more often than not PS1 textures would have their own 16 color palettes, not a 256 color palette.

When I first watched this video(2 or 3 years ago now), I was frustrated at how easy it looked and how I couldn't get the same results. Years later, I've learned blender to a degree and feel confident that I can make ps1 style graphics in blender with little fuss. I wanted to rewatch this video, since its important to remember where you start. If you're at the stage I was at 3 years ago, don't worry. When your desire to do something outweighs the pain of learning, you'll get there. Don't give up.

Just turn on vertex lighting in your material settings and you basically end up with gouraud shading :)

4 жыл бұрын
@@pomponi0 Yeah I'm gonna install many games from that era and I'm going to examine them using Milkshake 3D,that idea only occurred to me after watching this video,but yeah,if I can't find any tutorials on this style might as well study it myself.
@pomponi0
4 жыл бұрын
@@THExRISER Yeah, the basics haven't changed much. Basically just constrain your models' polycount and texture resolution down to a similar level as the ones from the old games. Also, at this point artists started texturizing assets properly, instead of just pasting digital photos into the diffuse channel. I think you can use the good old b&w bump mapping (but no Normal maps I believe)
@THExRISER
4 жыл бұрын
@@pomponi0 Obviously I'm not gonna bother with modern techniques,it's just gonna be low-poly 3D models with 2D textures wrapped around them,so yeah BW bump mapping is what I'll be going for,but it's all about replicating the same aesthetic and style those games have,because low-poly games exist today,like Astroneer,or TABS,but obviously those have different mdeling styles,and that's not just because of the lack of textures.
@Dogman_35

Thank you, thank you, and thank you. I've been looking for this forever!!
That pixel precision texture/vertex warping is the most horrific effect in video game history haha! So glad emulation can finally fix it on most games.
I love this, this is extremely useful
This is where it all started for me. This and the 2 hour video. I am so happy I stumbled upon you!
I love this stuff. This stuff needs a comeback!
I wondered what shader magic you had, I knew it couldn't just be the low poly and low res textures making the downgrades so convincing! The animation style is interesting too, I hadn't thought of how it had its own style as well
I created graphics for numerous ps1 games and although your technique is technically correct, saying ‘that’s pretty much all there is to it’ makes it sound quite trivial - it wasn’t that easy back then! In the early days we used 3ds DOS version (pre Max) and some textures were actually created in Deluxe Paint and Paint-shop Pro in 16 colours. Once we discovered vertex lighting, it really helped to give extra colours and gradients to otherwise flat models. Also textures were not that easy to source, digital photography was in its infancy and there were no real texture websites to download from. I remember having a cd with some textures on, and we used them as a base for everything, in fact you could see the same textures crop up time after time in ps1 games with minimal edits.
Hi my dear fellow you are amazing for making a VERY short video with no intro and the most amount of important information in so little time. Respect!
