I made this a few days ago. After I got it into the oven I came back and started reading the comments that were posted here. I honestly started to panic that my pie would have a soggy crust, hard apples and that it would be too salty. I had followed the recipe to the letter and I must say that it came out perfect! The apples were softened just right (I had let my apples macerate for 1 hour), the crust was not soggy and it was not too salty - in fact it wasn't salty at all. I do recommend waiting overnight before cutting though, because we cut into ours after 4 hours and had a bit of the liquid leak out into the pie dish. It was absolutely DELICIOUS! I will definitely make this again.

When I made the streussel topping, mixing the butter with the dry ingredients turned it into more like a dough. The melted butter was somewhat fresh from the microwave and still quite warm. Given that I'm making the pie for dessert on Christmas Eve, I'm not able to give everything a chance to rest the way they say.

A little note from my own baking experience with this recipe. Following the instructions exactly as is, and placing the pie on the 2nd to bottom rack at 350 degrees (as shown in the video) for an hour and 10 minutes led to a slightly undercooked pie. It could just be my oven, but the apples were still pretty raw. My recommendation, either place at the bottom rack for an hour and 10 minutes or leave at 2nd to bottom rack for an hour and 25 minutes (I ended up going with 2nd to bottom rack for an hour and 25 minutes). ALSO, the pie was good after letting it sit overnight, but after 2 days, it was SO MUCH BETTER. I don't know why that is, maybe the apples just needed to settle more and sit in the juices, but wow, day 2 of the pie was incredible and the crust was so flaky and tender. Definitely recommend the recipe with some slight baking time adjustments!

@@KanaidBlack I did not as I didn’t want to continue to cook the pie and then make it too mushy after it had already rested and cooled, but if you’re looking to get a warm slice of apple pie, you can probably put it in the oven at 350 degrees for like 10-15 min

Apples are easily available all year long so this pie can be made at any time. My grandmother used to make a custard layer at the bottom, then the apples then the streusel topping.

I didn’t work fast enough when rolling out the dough so it started to get warm and a little difficult to handle. If I start with a six inch disk, it might make it a little easier to roll. Fruit pies can be left out at room temp for best quality. Most food extensions will recommend refrigerating them after a couple days, but by then the pie is past its prime. Custard pies and pies with whipped cream or other dairy are recommended to be refrigerated after first cooling from the oven if necessary, but growing up we never refrigerated our pumpkin or other custard pies.

I made this pie last night. My Hungry Hubby was so excited he couldn't wait to eat a slice this morning for breakfast. I baked it for 60 minutes, checked and added 15 minutes for a total of 75 minutes. I had to force him to wait until morning to eat it. His first bite was, "the apples are raw" and his second bite was, "what's wrong with the pie crust"? Soggy bottom. He did like the streusel though. So disappointed. On a scale of one to ten I'd give it a 3 because the streusel was yummy. I'm from Philadelphia so I was so excited to try this recipe. A pie from my childhood. 🥧🥧🥧😭😭😭

I had the same problem as you did, I followed the recipe and added more baking time because the apples weren’t tender. I let it sit overnight, and just cut into it a few minutes ago. Such a disappointment to find a puddle of juice and a soggy crust. I agree with the other reviewers who said to do a blind bake first. The pie tasted good and the topping was good too.

Okay, I tried this recipe. Made the pie on 11-10-21. Just wondering if the substitution of sour cream for buttermilk caused the filling to curdle. Also, does the brand of ice cream matter? I'm allergic to eggs, so naturally I bought one without them, so I could try the pie. Any feedback would be awesome. God bless.

I've made pie crusts a few different ways. I've used buttermilk, I've used sour cream, I've used only water, but my favorite is actually using vodka. However, none of those things in the crust should damage the filling itself. Also, this recipe calls for traditional ice cream, not custard. Regular ice cream has to eggs. Just make sure it's full fat ice cream, not light. You need the fat from the cream.

@@JohannysVeganCooking I'm sorry, but no. She said she was allergic to eggs, not vegan. Besides, as I told her there's no need to make special changes since there are no eggs in the original recipe. Second, baking is chemistry. The different ingredients react with each other to make not only the flavor but also the shape and texture. There's a big difference between cane sugar and liquid sugars. Which there was no reason to remove normal cane and brown sugar for maple syrup and agave. I can almost forgive the vegan butter but it still messes up the consistency. You left out the cream, for obvious reasons, but without it you didn't really make a Dutch apple pie. You just made apple pie with a crumb topping. You also didn't peel the apples (why not???) and didn't let them sit before putting them into the pie. So you lost a great deal of the filling flavor since you had to be sure to get the apples out without any excess moisture as that would make your pie soupy. You didn't need to sacrifice all that flavor if you had just left the dried sugars in instead of trying to supplement those other sugar types. If you want to be vegan, that's your choice. And I'm not saying you shouldn't share your adaptations for other vegans. But it's a huge pet peeve of mine when vegans interject (since it wasn't requested) with some recipe calling it "AMAZING vegan ____". It may be close to the original, as in this case there's only a few non vegan ingredients. But it's not the same and for those of us who don't choose vegan I can assure you we don't think the vegan alternative tastes even the same much less better.
