How To Make Paper Beads | Beginner Level | Extended Version

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

This is an older version of an extended Paper Bead tutorial I made a couple years ago. I do plan at some point to make a shorter version. This video talks a little bit about the history of paper beading, papers that can be used, and a demo on how to roll paper beads just starting out. I, also mention, using more advanced tools if you decide you want to invest further in the craft.

Thank you for your video. I enjoyed watching it as I was rolling paper beads, LOL. I learned to make paper beads while in grade school from wall paper. I am now 72 and about ten years ago I started making them again. I love making the beads just to look at them and the feel of them. It is an obsession of mine. I look forward to more of your videos.

They are so addictive aren't they? I started making them about 7 years ago or so. I plan to be making more videos during the spring and summer months. I like to experiment with my own designs and designing papers to roll beads using mixed media and such. I thought about doing some beads to inspire others to make their own creative papers.

I’ve used church bulletins (order of church service) to make paper beads. The weight of paper is good & the picture on the front makes good coloring of beads.

I'm just starting out, I have arthritis real bad in my hands, specially my thumb joints , I'm in so much pain, yet I can't stop doing this ! I love it. I just used a old folder , I painted it and it rolled up really nice ! My first good looking bead ! 😊 Or you can take out the stapel that hold magazines together. Then you have a nice long piece of that thin yucky paper. I learned last night to have a very damp rag in my lap. We think very much alike ! 😊

Try wearing a arthritic glove while rolling your beads. They have the finger and thumb tips cut out so you can still craft, but give support to your hand at the same time. I wear one when I crochet. It helps a lot. You can find them on Amazon. Also, if you are having pain, take breaks often. If you're having pain, your body is letting you know you need to rest.

I like to leave a millimeter at the skinny tip and alternate sizes with another bead with a tip the same width as the base of the other bead. I'll do a whole sheet of paper and can choose to add the smaller tip to the end of the wide base for a wider bicone bead

When I want a really small hole for earrings or something I wrap first around a toothpick just to get it curled how I want it and then I take it off and I reroll it (with white glue as needed) around a straightened out paper clip. I hadn't heard about spun paper before and you probably use better glazing techniques than what I've used so far. I'll have to check out those other videos! Thanks!

Idk 🤷‍♀️ any recipes on treating your toothpicks or skewers? I hadn't worked with them til now,,much more comfortable,,but didn't know how to treat until now thank you so much! ❤

  • @LoomingCraftyFiberArts

I really didn't measure how much coconut I used. What I did do was dump a whole box of rounded toothpicks in container with a fitted lid and if I were to guess maybe start with a teaspoon amount of pure coconut oil and coat them all with your hands moving them around and back and forth. I left my cover off for a day or 2 and went back a few times a day to make sure all the tooth picks were good and covered moving them around. If they need more coconut oil, add more, but I didn't need to. If they seem to have too much coconut oil, add more toothpicks. After a couple of days, I put the lid on and left them. Store them in a cool, dry place. I have some I coated years ago and still use them. I haven't had to add any more oil, either. They will eventually absorb all the oil and last for a long time. Don't put them in the refrigerator. If you do the coconut oil, you will go back to solid form again.A shelf where it's cool at room temperature will work just fine.

Also, if you want to add essential oils, you can. If you do decide to add essential oils, I would put your coconut oil in a bowl and add the oil(s) you desire and then mix completely with a spoon before adding to your toothpicks. This way, the oil(s) will be evenly distributed.

Which of all those rollers is the most used?

  • @LoomingCraftyFiberArts

    @LoomingCraftyFiberArts

    Жыл бұрын

It is really personal preference and can depend on a lot of factors. It can depend on what type of paper you prefer working with or what type of jewelry you intend to make. Do you enjoy making smaller beads or larger beads? Do you enjoy working with thinner or thicker paper? Do you need to make Focal beads with larger holes. Are you going to use wire to string your beads or leather cord? Do you prefer layering paper to make larger beads, but prefer a smaller holed bead? Do you prefer less layers of paper but a larger holed bead? Some papers like cardboard are harder to roll on smaller diameter rollers, where as in contrast a smaller diameter roller works better with thin paper such as from magazines. So, really depends on what you intend to make your beads with and for.

Great advice! There are many ways to utilize avaliable resources to make crafting tools. There is nothing wrong with making your own. I have made many things to craft with instead of buying.

Thank you! Yes, I sure do. I have been planning to get more back into paper arts and paper bead designing, but I have had health battles that have thwarted my plans. I do hope that in the near future, I can get back to the tutorial ideas I want to do. I absolutely love and enjoy paper arts!

Stitch markers are used in knitting and crochet to mark a certain place while working a pattern.

If you want your beads to be smooth, you can file them with sandpaper or a fingernail file. I have done this, and it won't remove all the ridges, but it will be less noticeable. If you want your beads to be particular colors, you have a few options. You can use solid colored paper, paint with acrylic craft paint, watercolor paint, or color your paper strips you are going to roll with colored markers.
