The American Republic P-47 Thunderbolt, also known as the Jug, was one of the largest single-engine fighters of its time. It was one of the main fighters of the US Air Force during World War II. Although designed as a fighter to protect Boeing B-17 flying fortresses against Luftwaffe attacks during long-range bombing raids, the P-47 proved more suitable in ground attack role. The modern aircraft serving a similar role today, the A-10 Thunderbolt II, uses a designation derived from the P-47. The Thunderbolt also served with a number of other Allied air forces (mainly the United Kingdom and Brazil).
