For someone that says they have limited experience your tips are all right on! The only thing I could add for people living in the tropics is to not leave them in direct sunlight when they are still in pots. It will slow down the growth and make the leaves light. I have between 350 and 400 palms in my garden (in pots) and the ones under a partial shade cloth grow the fastest. Don't shade the sun too much though or else the palms will grow thin and weak. So: The bigger the pot the better (loosen some roots when potting over) Top soil off over all visible roots Fertilise Water periodically so to prevent roots from drying out completely (especially the thin roots will die otherwise and regrowing them slows down growth elsewhere) Water the leaves from time to time Give enough sunlight (but not too much while still in pots in hot climates)

Edward, where are you located? I just planted 3 Christmas Palms in my patio here in Southern California (Zone 10). 1 is potted and gets full sun all day, and the other 2 I have planted in the ground and get partial shade more than direct sun. Full sun happens for them about 4 hours a day. I realize that's not a lot for a Christmas palm, but I could really use some advice..

Birds have planted about 7 of these in my front plant bed. I dug them out and potted them. The secret to getting them to grow big is using really deep pots. These trees have very deep tap roots. So you need to give it like a 24" deep pot.

Dear sir thank you for an interesting video I haven't been gardening long but I really love palms and I'm trying to grow the small pups and what you said was very interesting, if I see a palm in someone's garden I always stop and talk to them because sometimes they might of been growing a tree for 30 years and if it's a beautiful specimen you can mostly learn a lot from gardeners because they like to share their knowledge. I would like to grow three or four trees in one area close together will that affect them or would it be beneficial in that they would have a small microclimate to help them grow where I am in England I leave the trees outside all the time and they seem to be growing very well thank you Sam. thank you

When I was at the beach like a year ago there was some palm tree seeds on the ground underneath the palm tree so I picked them up and threw them in some pots I had at home. I just recently saw a couple what I thought was Weeds or pieces of grass and I ripped one up just to see that it had a seed on it. Then I realized that it was the palm trees and now I have two growing and I'm excited. Also kind of mad that I ripped up the first one thinking it was a weed

I always repot palms when the soil temps are warm enough to activate/continue root growth. Palms that are transplanted into soil that is too cold will cease root growth and rot. Temps for temperate species can be a bit lower, tropicals should be higher ( I would think 70f+) Unchecked root growth means unchecked top growth.

It depends on how water tolerant your palm species is. Generally, palms love lots of wood chip compost with some actual wood chip mixed in. Mix some sand with that (but not too much) and you should have a decent palm mix. If you want to buy something pre-mixed, the closest one would be cacti and succulent mixes, but they are expensive, so if you do get some, mix it 50/50 with a wood compost mix. Don't forget to fertilize the soil mix with a solid, slow release fertilizer also, because cacti mixes don't have a lot of nutrients.

If you move up to a giant pot right away it encourages root rot. Because the bigger the pot the more water you will need to use and it will be too much water for a smaller palm.

I just got a 4 ft Trachycarpus maybe a week ago and after its first day outside I brought it inside and the leaflets were looking darker and were starting to fold up. It was out in full sun for about 6 hours and I've been holding back on watering to avoid root rot. I have very well draining soil and I haven't fertilized yet. None of the leaves are yellowing or pale and no brown tips. The top of the soil was pretty dry when I brought it inside but I just gave it a gallon of water before I put it out. There's no way it would be using that much water during transplant shock right? Would mites cause this behavior? I'm sort of at a loss and you seem to be the expert on pommate palms. Either way great videos man they're like finding gems in a pile of rocks.

What kind of palm is it? Could be the soil. Some palms like well drained soil, others more moist. Could be your soil. Or not watering thoroughly on a regular basis if it's in a pot. I take care of people's potted plants when they're out of town, and I noticed how soil looks wet on top, but down beneath, it is bone dry. This happens when there's no regular watering and then when the soil becomes too dry, it repels the moisture. Then the plant either needs to be repotted with moist soil or you'll need to work the moisture back into soil with your hands, or have it sit in a saucer type water capture at bottom with extra water sitting in it. Not sure if that's what happened to you, but I see this as a common problem. Repot your palm and chop up banana peels, let them soak in water for a few days, then pour on soil near roots. Palms love the potassium in it. I feed mine with whole bananas chopped up mixed with water and into the soil when bananas are on sale.

It's called root bound...its when a plant has an excessive root system and it doesn't have the space for the roots to stretch and absorb nutrients and they basically wrap around one another until they choke themselves causing a deficiency in nutrients uptake and the plant suffers...its equivalent to a person that's 280 lbs. restricting themselves to eating lunchables and starving themselves...they need to take in as much as their mass requires or they will either stunt growth or decline until death...repotting is necessary and should not be put off for too long...

And be all by itself if the palm is with other palms it will grow slower. the one on its own will always be faster growing in the one mixed with all the others in one pot
