How To Make NASA's Space Tiles

Ойын-сауық

A behind the scenes look of the making of Thermal Protection Systems (aka heat shield tiles use on space vehicles) at NASA's Kennedy Space Center. Jacobs Technology is the contractor making these thermal protection system tiles that were used on NASA's Orion and will be used on Dream Chaser. This is the first look into the facility by media since 2011.

I went to a lecture with a chemical engineering professor who demonstrated in class the way space shuttle tiles were made. I have not seen any information about his method on the internet. But Im pretty sure its right. He made a sample in class, it was thinner than a pencil and a meter long and nobody could break it, even banging it on stone. Stronger than steel, and lighter. There was a frisbee made from the stuff which worked like a normal frisbee and that is what got them the contract.

That sounds useful! Instead of a frisbee, it would do more utility as a sultonius spinner for hot fluids or even foundry work ?

Because of "intellectual property rights" that destroys competition, I am guessing. Plus, why make quality, safe, built-to-last buildings when planned obsolescence using plastic polyethylene cladding that turns affordable housing into death traps (re: Grenfell Towers) is totally legal! Because if you ain't rich, you're poor and deserve to maybe lose what little you have or die horribly I guess.

Because they are such poor conductors of heat they reflect heat so they make great insulator ( heat reflectors) the guy who invented the green egg grill made his grills lined up with these bricks so all the heat from a coal fire is reflected to the food entirely and not lost to the grill like it happens with a metal made grill. The green egg is so efficient at reflecting heat you need less charcoal to burn to cook your food, so a bag of charcoal would last 2 or 3 seasons

$500-$5000 per tile isn't too bad, considering the cost of a X band transmitter is $100,000 and that's not including the ability to change frequencies, or even use it for voice and data signals, for that it's into the millions to find a reliable one for a bargain that will work in space, and because it's NASA they would want 3 of them to make sure they can call home, the antenna cost isn't included, you want an antenna it's going to cost you an additional $10,000. Still wanting to launch a cube sat? it's not that cheap the cheapest cubesats are going to be around $300,000 to have it work reliably in LEO.

That's precisely what they do... for high fire risk areas. It's simply too expensive and unnecessary for the average person. Homes which comply with 2000's standards, even, are very good against fires. The problem is that 70%+ of homes do not comply with modern code standards for fireproofing, nor are they required to, nor COULD they be required to (without mass unrest and massive costs).
