I’m a fellow slow traveler. I spent most of my time in SE Asia. I own 3 rental properties [in Memphis, I paid approx $100K each] with mortgages on all of them. I have a property manager that does a fantastic job. The revenue I get pays about half my expenses. I sold my home and put the proceeds in an index fund. The interest off the index funds pays the other half.

I started my own business reselling vintage clothes, accessories and home décor. I can do most of the work online but when I travel, I have someone pack and ship orders for me. I enjoy shopping and love being my own boss, working only when I want, and the extra income pays for all my travel. Best of all, I source new product inventory on my trips, so my travel expenses are also tax-deductible.

I have an accounting degree, had a career in financial software consulting and running a small biz, and in retirement I have a handful of clients I do bookkeeping and business advisory services for. It keeps my mind active. Now I am considering a YT channel on budget solo travel and early retirement. I am still playing with the idea. Grounded Life Finances kind of led me into it. But I do know there is a lot of work in the channel thing. I actually have clients that are content creators.

We are fortunate that we own 3 apartments that will be our main source of passive income when we begin slow traveling next year at the age of 52. We maintain a home warranty that covers repairs on pretty much anything for a small deductible amount. Our daughter lives in the area and she will be our "property manager" - being an HOA we don't need to worry about any of the maintenance to the outside but of course we do need to account for that HOA monthly fee. We do have non-retirement accounts to fund some unexpected events and also retirement accounts for when we reach 59 1/2 - We are also very fortunate to be debt free which I agree with you guys is key to the success of retiring early. We are not camera friendly people :) so doing videos may not work for us, we know our limitations and making friends is definitely not our strength, overtime our circle of friends and people we hang out with has shrunk to almost zero, most times is just just the two of us. I do consult a lot of people on their finances and at my job as a loan officer on mortgages etc. so there may be a way to profit from it as a consultant...Thanks for sharing, Cheers!

We live in a small Colorado mountain town for 4 months in the summer and RV camp host for a free place to stay. We do have a longtime business that we can do from anywhere (we work 10-20 hrs a week). But my GF has mixed in waiting tables for the summer and does quite well. I am pretty confident that if our business goes away we can both do that for 4 months and make enough to travel and live the other 8 months. I am not too proud to do that.

One of your first points regarding renting out your current residence is a valid point of issue. In Canada, and specifically Ontario, I have been told by accountants and investment advisors alike that I should consider selling my residence rather than looking to rent it out. Problematic tenants and having them removed can be a real hassle. Your concern about having a Property Manager is also an issue. The other issue by selling the property is taking yourself out of the housing market, in a rising market. This deserves real thought. The residence is an asset and should earn you some income. I would also not minimize the effort you made to become known on KZread and gain your audience. The audience has to like you and appreciate your content too which is not guaranteed either (it's not an "If you build it, they will come" situation, no matter good you think you are). You have to be comfortable in doing it, as well as investing in the technology. Not everyone will become a conglomorate selling bling bling!! ;) Cheers to both!

As for teaching English, I knew several people who did VIP Kid (and my wife tried) and it has essentially collapsed as it is almost entirely dependent on China and, given their regime's recent activity and rhetoric, people are loathe to have contact with Americans on line (and, despite propaganda, China is experiencing serious economic issues).

Off topic question. My husband and I are very seasoned travelers, but our next trip is to SE Asia and involves some excursions where we'll be leaving our stuff on the boat, van etc. We both need to have our laptops with us and it will just not be feasible to lug them around with us all day. What do you generally do in those situations?
