"Why would you want to eat that cute little bunny??" Well. Eventually that little bunny becomes a rabbit and rabbits taste good. Animal husbandry is a very good skill to teach your children. I have talked with many people that have a disconnect between the meat from the store and the cute animals they see.

I have been in the restaurant business forty five years. We started when our youngest son was one year old. He and his brother run the business now and we always had them front and center in the business with us. Then came 17 grands over the years and most of them were raised in the business since the parents work there. So I think you are smart to keep the children with you and teach them all you can...….....God Bless

I raise rabbits here in Texas as well. I raised the Californian meat rabbits. Last year I had a ton of rabbits to sell and no one really wanted to buy them. Now that this whole covid-19 virus hit everybody's really wanting rabbits now. I have been inundated by calls from people who want to buy rabbits. I kick myself for not breeding them this year.

Such cuteness. She's adorable. I'm not sure about the market for meat rabbits, but I buy at least 2 rabbits a week from a guy I work with. I'm seriously considering getting back into raising rabbits again. When I lived on a 33 acre farm with my grandparents, I raised rabbits. Mostly for my family to eat, but we also sold some during Easter and some at Christmas. My biggest issue with raising rabbits for meat is that I have grown such a soft heart, it's difficult for me to kill the cute little guys like I used to.

Meat rabbits might not be a thing in your area, but there are stores that carry them dotted over the country. I bought one a few weeks ago in Indiana. I just am fortunate to live near a store that keeps rabbit meat in stock. You just have to search around to find them, or ask your local grocer to order a case of them for your own use. A case usually equates to about 6 processed and frozen rabbits. Also, most rabbitry places will process a rabbit for you if you want a fresh, never frozen, rabbit for your table.

I wouldn't pair Blue(the blue broken doe) and the black broken buck again. Paring BrokenxBroken will give you the Charli pattern seen on the two white kits, which is high white with little to no color. Your best bet, as you said, would be to pair the solid blue(or lilac maybe) kit back to the sire or dam depending on the gender. That'll give you a really pretty 50/50 broken look. If you want to eliminate black and try and focus just on improving your blues- ONLY breed blue babies back to a blue parent or blue sibling, eventually it will weed out the other colors :) I hope this helps! Personally, I ADORE castor and tri, Rexes are by far my favorite rabbit breed!

I don't have rabbits yet...though I had them throughout my youth. If you're looking to get more blues and broken blues, breed a blue to a broken blue and you'll get 50/50. Breed a black that's recessive for blue to a broken blue or a broken black recessive with blue and you'll get the mix you describe. Want even more variety....look for a black buck or doe that carries the chocolate gene. That'll open up the potential for chocolates and lilacs as well. If you want all broken, stay within the same color family and breed a solid to a true Charlie and the whole litter will be broken. I believe I saw somewhere that you might also get a tiny percentage of REW. Again, I don't breed nor do I own rabbits but I often watch homesteading vids while I wait for my homestead. Maybe someday. If there is any error in what I just wrote, anyone with experience is welcome to correct me as I'm learning too!

Im not sure how different MO is from where youre at, but selling a bred doe would be a loss here. If you consider the cost of growing out those rabbits to that age, youre not going to break even here. In order to make any money in rabbits here in MO, key is to sell 8 wk old bunnies at market rate. Thats does for $30 to $100 each purebred, depending on breed. Cheapest is conventional meat breeds, more for rex & topping out at $100 for Flemish Giants. Less for mixed breeds. Less for bucks usually. And sell their manure. But i think maybe not figuring cost to feed water and house those rabbits that long. 🤷

My 3rd rabbit (third breed also) i'm going to get into breeding. Since their showing points are mostly by markings a lot of the breed goes to the meat industry. The guy i got her from will either make them pets or meat rabbits. Sadly i need more space and a buck from him but this quarantine order doesn't help my space issue. My friend's family can't build anything since they don't have enough space, it's been raining and we need a company that delivers wood/wire for me to get hutches built. My rabbits are inside but they need to go out since our AC runs into where they are. Only way i would use that hallway is if i was breeding in winter for whatever reason.

You need to breed that doe to a blue buck to get more blues, less black and broken throws 50% so you will always have some of those.

Are you going to keep the blue (sage) for breeding? Also, in terms of genetics with rabbits, how do you know what traits will pass down? Like if your blue ends up being a female vs a male? Which is preferred when breeding for a specific color? I think if I were to do a breeding program for rabbits, I'd love to have a cool calico looking rabbit.

I may be wrong, but I was told to only breed Father/daughter. Never mother/son for rabbits, or get different parents either a different buck or a different doe. The reason is because of Gene's, birth abnormalities. Missing limbs and other defects.

Rabbit is absolutely delicious. My only problem is if they're cute and adorable like that I can't slaughter them when it's time. I know this, because my dad used to raise rabbits when I was little. However, I can go out specifically to shoot rabbits for meat and have no problems with that. So for me I guess it's all the difference between is it a wild rabbit, or is it a cute little black and white baby bunny that I've raised from the time it was born.

How old do my rabbits need to be to breed them? I've been told 12 weeks, 16-20 weeks, and even 6-8 months. How old do you suggest?

  • @leahheapp

    @leahheapp

    4 жыл бұрын

5K Ranch please allow them to grow before you breed them. At 12 weeks they are still babies and are still growing. They can breed at 12 weeks but if I were to choose from either of your dates, 6-8 months would be much better for them. It also depends on the breed and their size. Larger rabbits you have to typically wait longer than for small breeds. But just because the smaller breed does are ready at 4 1/2 months doesn’t mean that breeding them then is the best thing.

It can be difficult to locate a buyer, but they are out there. And each buyer will have their own specifications about what they are looking for in color and age. Commercial buyers have pretty strict requirements. The pelts have to be harvested between 22 and 26 weeks, and you would have to tan them first. Usually by that time, you want to just go ahead and keep it! Google Rex rabbit fur blanket. It's unfortunate that meat rabbits need to be harvested at 12 weeks since that isn't enough time to get a prime pelt. 22-26 week old rabbits can still be eaten, of course, but they have to be slow-cooked.

Unfortunately it also depends on the size of the rabbits. I've been breeding Rex for years and I have a really hard time selling them. I've even lost sales because I've corrupted people who believe I'm selling mini rex and not the big boys. I had my first litter of dwarf hotots and they were all sold in 2 weeks.

Also 4H kids buy the REW for their meat pens. Ppl who are doing meat production only want REW cause theyre not as"cute" so easier to dispatch. By this video and your last, i do wonder how long youve been into this. Totally cool if youre relatively new to this. Ive only been into it for 18 mos. Do think its premature to sell how to videos on how to raise rabbits. But I'm just going on the few videos ive watched from you on the topic and the times posted. Therss just so much more. And yes, you can easily make decent money on rabbits depending on your area. Im breaking even now, my rabbitry pays for itself now. And Im buying 700# of feed per mo at this point...lol And i could be totally off base. Good luck tho. I LOVE rabbits and it sounds like youre enjoying it as well.

I'm mainly looking for a place to sell my quality show rabbits and poo. Because Facebook isnt alowing sales of animals and Craigslist has some questionable people there. EDIT: also if you are looking for a White Rabbit that does not have red eyes I would suggest finding rabbits with the genetics chinchilla or ermine specifically ermine. Because they are mostly white with brown eyes. I have gotten an ermine out of some of cottontail rabbitries stock and she is absolutely gorgeous. Unfortunately I have not been able to replicate her color.
