I checked another clip on this topic and found it stressful, as the content creator was yelling and talking so fast. So yes, this is informative and not stressful.
Being the second shooter worked best for me as a part-time photographer, I have the oportunity to learn new things and improve my skills. Art direction is something that a lot of people overlook and I’m glad I have the oportunity to learn more and more almost on a daily basis, plus getting paid to do so ain’t a bad thing 😊 Thanks for your tips Julia, you’re truly one of my favorites 😘 Love from Brazil.

Thank you so much! And yes, being a second shooter is actually a great way of making photography a part-time job :D
I would also recommend not quitting your day job while you build your business! The pressure of making money to pay your bills when you're just starting out.... can burn you out incredibly quick. I very quickly discovered that and ended up getting myself a part-time job while building my business/second shooting etc. Could use my part-time job to pay for my bills, and the money I earned from photography was reinvested back into my business through buying gear etc. Especially with wedding photography - the gear requirements for a wedding are large compared to photographing something like family portraits.

Yes this is really important!! I used to work as a retoucher in a studio while I was trying to get my photography business up and running. Eventually you will start booking enough jobs and see a growth in your business so you'll know when it feels right to quit your day job and go full time with photography. Thanks for mentioning that 😊
Seriously, I feel like any questions I have you usually have a video for it. Its amazing and am truly grateful that you are doing what you're doing! Keep it up 😍
WOAH - “10 years or so”?? I thought you were like 20 years old MAX haha!

This was extremely helpful! I'm so happy I came across your videos. Everything you say is so accessible, and your advice always rings true. Sharing your journey has helped me map out a clearer path to my photography goals on several fronts. Just wanted to say thanks! Keep em coming :)
I found your channel about a month ago, and have been binge watching. You give great advice, have stunning photos, well done videos and B-Roll. Very engaging. Congratulations on your success! Happy shooting!
This was so helpful! I am a fashion and small business photographer in the states. I’m still working some details out for what exactly I want to offer. I think this helped give me some clarity 💕
Love this Julia!! thank you so much for sharing this!! Much love
This video is like a full time course done on how to start and be a photographer. So many helpful tips and your personal experience, that's what makes it more effective.
Added to favorite! Many good advices in this one, I'll have to listen back to it. Thank you Julia!
Thanks for this awesome video! And yeah the quote by Casey is just right... :) I personally started shooting weddings as a second shooter couple weeks ago.. And you can learn lots of new things doing that! ;)
Great Tips this mostly apply to any creative field and it's good to experiment with different style. Great video as always !
Ur voice makes me feel at home ... I'm greatful to see u talk ♥️
just starting out with photography as a hobby, enjoying your videos, very informative. Thank you
I love watching your videos Julia. You really help me realize that I am on the right path! I am shooing my first commercial shoot this weekend, and I never did that. Looking forward to trying something new!
I’m so greatful for you, and advices!
As someone who already has a career (which I'm not giving up) and wants to pursue photography as a "paid hobby" (first camera ever is going to be my Christmass gift to myself), I really, really enjoyed this video. Thank you! PS: I've been binge-watching your channel for the past few days. This isn't the first video I feel like I should thank you for. Great stuff!

Love all your videos! You are such a great photographer and teacher! xx
Thank you for the tips ❤️❤️❤️. I really needed some guidance on this topic...
Awesome tips! Thank you for sharing. 😊
Great video! I did a volunteer gig for an event locally and before I did the event the company asked me to take photos the day before for the setup of the event! Was my first paid gig! It also helped to get my name and work out there as I gave all my business cards to people at the event, and the company credited me for the work! 1.5 million potential clients! I know it wont happen overnight. But one day I hope to just photograph as a job! I love doing it!
Julia this was a great video. Loved every point you made on this video. 👏👏👏

Julia Trotti you're welcome. ❤
Nice video. I am actually running businesses within something completely different. The idea of jumping the boat on photography has always been there, but after inheriting my fathers canon 5D IV and a few really great lenses the idea came to life even more so. This was very inspiring to me. Thanks!
Fall in love. With ur voice and ur eyes.... Thanx for sharing the knowledge. N this video is very helpful. luv from India.
That is a great point - I said yes to everything involving holding a camera too. I wanted to try it all! :)
TY!!! Such great information you’re so lovely to watch thank you so much.

thanks for the helpful tips. I actually was just thinking of asking someone to let me be their wedding photography assistant..but still wedding photography kinda freaks me out :0

Glad you liked it :) As an assistant you don't really have all that pressure of the main wedding photographer which is a nice way to ease into it. Once you have a system down and you're comfortable with your cameras and back up equipment (harddrives, etc) weddings are so much fun to capture!
Very helpful! I’m actually taking some people’s senior pics this summer and I’m pumped!
Hi Julia, I just discovered your photography a few weeks ago and have seen ten or so of your YT programmes. I have enjoyed them all, and found new nuggets of wisdom in each of them but I particularly liked this one! Thank you for sharing your valuable experiences and your tips which I found really useful; it's very generous of you and I really appreciate it. please keep at it!!!
Thanks Julia for amazing tips and being so honest, great video :)

I have not started uploading my pictures online, however, I have been leaning towards uploading these pictures online. I needed to see a video like this that mentioned everything you said. Continue the great work thank you so much!!!! 😊

Hi Julia! Thanks for the video! Just picked up my first mirrorless camera (Sony a7 III w. kit lens). Did my first portrait/landscape shoot yesterday and applied many of your shooting styles / tips in my shots, and they came out wonderful! Hoping to start a side business shooting weddings, portraits, model portfolios, and work my way up to professional shoots. Would be honored to be your second shooter! -Cheers, Rob

Thank you for this!
I think these are great tips. Thank you! New subscriber here
Ty! Very great info! Mwah!
Hey Julia!! ...nobody teaches this and it's soooo frustrating to me. I know my way around a camera pretty well, but some of these more technical types of tricks and effects are things I still have yet to conquer and really figure out. THANK YOU soooo much for doing this for us!! I would sure give the world for you to also do a couple of videos teaching us how to photograph sparkler exits, light trails with wedding reception dance photos, how to photograph those cigar smoke photos of the guys on wedding day, and how to get that hair spray shot when the bride is getting ready. I'd also love to learn how to do some of those trick photos that so many of you do on wedding days - the reflection, shooting through things, bokeh lights, ring shots with an extra fun flair, etc. A super fun photographer that does a lot of this stuff is Jason Martin with Concept Photography. This guy has some super cool photography tricks and effects and I still have yet to figure out how he does a lot of them.
Really great tips Julia!! :) I enjoyed the video today very much! Especially the tip on how to get into wedding photography! I have my first wedding coming up in September and i'm quite nervous. I'm currently looking for some second shooting positions to get used to the flow a little bit and learn the main photographers duties a little more! Have a wonderful day :) And as always, I look forward to the next video!

I did my first earlier this year and it was an amazing experience. All I can say is always be ready for anything!!! I stood back a bit and took photos of what was going on but in hindsight I needed to direct the people so the photo's would work. Does not mean stop them doing things, just get them into better positions or move stuff out of the way etc. Good luck!

Thanks so much Alex, that's awesome to hear you have a wedding coming up - they are so much fun to capture! And I agree, I think if you can second shoot a couple of times before then you'll be a lot less nervous :) Good luck!
