It's amazing how the same dish can be made so differently across the US regions. Until youtube I had no idea people made chicken and homemade square noodles and called it chicken and dumplings. To me, this is more like a chicken stew with noodles. My grandma, in the 50s, raised chickens and grandpa would butcher one, grandma would simmer it all day, strain the stock and pick out the meat and make dumplings (flour, salt, baking powder, milk) that she dropped from a spoon and was like biting into a cloud. She only used salt, pepper, a real onion, and sage, thyme or marjoram in the stock. No bouillon cubes, carrots, potatoes, celery, canned soup or any processed food. I make it like she did, the exceptions being I have to buy a whole chicken, I can't get whole raw milk or a home garden raised onion. While this looks good I think it could be a lot healthier. Not sure I could take the noodles instead of real, fluffy dumplings, they seem gummy. To each his own though! It's kind of like chili, do you make it with beans or no? Or grits with shrimp (eww, sorry, I've tried it) in the south but only used as a hot breakfast cereal (Cream of Wheat) with butter, sugar and or milk in other regions. Funny how we all have our own favorite memories of foods based on how and where we grew up. Cheers!

its funny how us folk in the west use different names for stuff. a dumpling to us is a spoon of dough dropped into a boiling pot of broth or fruit. it looks like a drop biscuit floating in the broth and very good. we call chicken and noodles similar to what you make except we add about six eggs and cut into long narrow noodles and drop into boiling broth. we serve our chicken and noodles over mashed potatoes. yes potatoes, we are from Idaho.

I am french Canadian from way up north of Quebec and my paternal grandmother made this. How odd. My dad loves it so much and so do i. I kept the tradition alive. I still wonder where my family took this recipe from. We are taking about 1930,s or so. Good to see this on your channel. Soul food as no bonderies.

This looks a whole lot better than my Mothers chicken & dumplings. She threw the whole damn chicken in... skin, bones & all. It looked horrible but there was 11 of us so by the time I got my serving only the broth was left anyway and boy was I glad!! LOL!

I make my dumplings with the broth too and my now grown kids love this flavorful, comfort meal from their childhood ... and ask for it often. Thanks for keeping it real and cooking with the flow of your family. I enjoy watching and can't wait to try your biscuits!

I'm Carribean and I always wanted to see this recipe it looks like our traditional soup. We add provisions yams, potatoes, carrots, pumpkin and dumplings with scotch bonnet peppers. We put dumplings as well aka spinners. Lol. African southern American Latin American and Caribbean foods are all the same because we all originated from the same place. Thanks T for your amazing spirit.

I like that she tells you how much it would cost, when I was a young single mother of three, I had to learn how to use left overs, because my kids didn't like eating left overs, I became a master with left overs, they never found out how the transformation happened! Meatballs are probably my favorite to split apart and make something totally different and awesome!
