I’m glad I have a Ibanez and a Randall amp I’m trying to make sludge metal with Funeral Doom influences the band Crowbar got me into Doom.

Getting thicker strings for your guitar helps with the tone and keeping the guitar in tune - especially if you are playing in B standard tuning or lower. The string gauges that work best for you really depend on your guitar though.
