I really enjoy your tutorials. I wanted to ask how you figure the aspect ratios. I am looking to make a wallet chain and I like the way your work is tight and not loose. What is the mathematical formula you use to keep it tight?

The all important thing is to keep the same AR, as long as you do that, your chain will look the same regardless of material or size. Check out my Byzantine video for an explanation of AR. But simply, the aspect ratio is the inner diameter of the jump ring (IE the size of the mandrel) divided by the diameter of the wire. You need to work in mm. So in my case the rings I use are 1mm diameter and have an inner diameter of 5mm. So... 5mm divided by 1mm = AR 5 if you think about it, this means that 5 wires will fit across the diameter of one jump ring. Hence it determines how tight a chain you can make. A basic belcher chain for example could be made (just) with AR 2. as long as you can get two rings through another you can make a belcher. But in the case of the Persian 6 in 1 here, the clue is in the title. Six rings go through each one, so the inner diameter needs to accommodate six wires. Obviously this varies depending on the pattern of the chain. But hence you see where we end up with an AR of 5 to 6 for a nice looking Persian. You can also flip the equation round too... Lets say you have some 1.2 mm wire and you want to make a Persian. Simple, just multiply the AR (lets say 5) by the diameter of the wire. 1.2mm wire X 5 AR = 6 mm mandrel. So just grab a 6mm mandrel and you'll get a nice Persian with your 1.2mm wire . But how big will the bracelet be? well that's simple too, imagine looking at a jump ring flat and drawing a line across the middle. You've got 1.2mm wire + 5mm mandrel + 1.2mm wire. Hence the outer diameter of the rings and bracelet will be 7.4mm (or in other words double the wire, plus the mandrel). Likewise say you have some jump rings. 7.2 mm outside diameter, made from 1.2mm wire. can you use these for a Persian? well, you just need to work out the AR. So if its 7.2mm diameter then , Simply subtract two lots of wire. 7.2 outside - 1.2 wire - 1.2 wire = 4.5mm inside diameter With the wire and inner diameter we can now calculate the AR thus... 4.5 inside dia / 1.2 wire = 3.75 AR That's way to tight and would not work for a Persian 6 in 1. (remember we need 5 to 6 AR) However a great ratio for a byzantine is 3.5 to 4 AR. so whilst these rings wouldn't make a Persian, they'd make a great byzantine. Inner diameter / wire diameter =AR Wire diameter X AR = Inner diameter (the mandrel size required) Wire diameter + mandrel Diameter + Wire diameter = outside diameter (width of final bracelet). Outer diameter - Wire diameter - wire diameter = Inner diameter (mandrel) Perhaps I should make a video on all this. Hope this helps. Dave

Thank you. I have been a University and college lecturer for 20 years, with four teaching certificates, A Postgraduate certificate of education, and a Masters in Education. Along with work on educational psychology in two published books. Perhaps I have a natural confidence, but my ability to teach comes from a lot of study and planning. I plan each video like a lesson, considering carefully all the information I need to impart and what knowledge my audience might or might not already have. Some of my videos take weeks to plan. thanks so much Dave...:)...your explanation really helped a lot....the big piece of info for me that put what you were saying into perspective, was understanding that most jewelry venders are giving the OUTSIDE DIAMETER of the jump rings! and not the inside diameter were it is most important since you need a certain diameter to get the aspect ratio for the piece. thanks again, love your work and your videos....hope to see much more mail vids from ya!

Quite correct, just minus "double the wire diameter" to get the inner diameter or mandrel size. you can then divide that by the wire to get the aspect ratio. Quite simple once you understand it, but essential to getting the right look for your chains. Thanks for watching. Dave

Thanks for your videos. They are my favorites among chainmaille tutorials. I did want to pass on a small variation I stumbled across. For the flip step, I find it easier to thread the new ring through the v-shaped rings first, then thread through the two just-added loose rings. As far as I can tell, the outcome is the same but I get the fiddly bit out of the way with maximum control over the ring I'm threading. Thanks again. Can't wait for the next weave tutorial.

I've only just started with making chain bracelets. I've watched several videos on how to do this weave, but this is by far the easiest way to do it. The rings are almost falling into place all by themselves once you've got the flip-and-turn movement going. Thank you very much for this tutorial. Also love the accent 😉

I made a bracelet about 2 years ago starting with this video. Last night it broke, cause I used copper and steel rings. The copper is obviously softer so it's been shaving through and stretching more than I thought. Came back to the tutorial again and it works every time. Thank you.

Like every other comment, this is the best tutorial out there. Quality is great, you take your time, and go show, in detail, how to really create it. I spent 4 hours trying to make it. Alas, I failed the whole time, until I came across this video. Couldn't believe that I got it. I literally questioned myself, "how did it work? how did I get it right? what did I do wrong". I continued and now I'm halfway done with a bracelet. Taking a break now, but this video was the best help I've seen. Thank you.

Dude, you just made a difficult task extremely doable. I used your thread concept to make a tension board to help me build the chain. I am using a AR 4 ring to make a nice stainless steel chain. Thank you! Thank you! Thank You!

This is brilliant! I’ve looked at some tutorials for this weave that have made my head spin. Thanks to you, I just made a beautiful pair of sterling silver full Persian swag earrings with 22 gauge 3.6mm ID rings. They are stunning! Such a tight, beautiful weave.

Nice Video. I make chains and chainmail since I'm 15 years old, and this gives me the inspiration to try and make one of these chains once again, but better this time. I love the way you say "hook". Gave me a big smile on my face ;-) Greetings from Germany.

Wow, such a lovely comment. Thank you. When I am not making jewellery, I have been a university lecturer for over 18 years, specialising in media production. So I guess I have a rare set of skills in being able to make jewellery but also present it, and film it. Thanks for the lovely comments and for taking the time to do so. Just wanted to say thanks for this tutorial. Ends up my Aspect Ratio was the issue. Thanks for the slides for helping me get that straightened out... I was at waaaay too small a ratio! All the best.
