How To Make Friends with a Calf
Today I'm heading out to the pasture to show how to make friends with a calf. Most of our Dexter cattle are friendly, but the calf I'm making friends with today is pretty skittish, so it is going to take lots of patience to get him comfortable with me.

Call him Red Bull. The energy drink that sneaks up on your affections.
Me and my granddaughter she is 3 love watching your videos she likes all the cows and she runs through the house and saying come on cows come on cows
On our farm we named all the animals, except the chickens, well, we did name the rooster. He was mean. All six of us kids knew the animals were for food. I never had any issues with it, until we had to let Julius Caesar go to Butcher. We all cried. Great video 😍
I love watching your herd. I am a retired dairyman who fondly remembers trying to get through the barn while being mobbed by all the friendly ones.
I always made friends with our calves growing up and working on other farms. They are a HELL of a lot easier to milk when they freshen. And they are much more friendly and trusting. Thats what you want with your cattle.
Damian for the ginger calf just like the great actor in the TV show Billions ;-) Such a great actor and a great role.
“Umber” is my vote. It’s his color! Besides, he’s a unique calf, so I figure he should have a unique name! 🙂

Aaaaand...you'll never forget when someone asks "What's it's name?" you'll invariably say "Ummm..." !-)
My 4 yr old daughter says call em pumpkin(pronounced "punkin" The wife says red bull. I say, Lucas. Lol, thanks for takin us along, Pete
Love it Pete. When I was 15 I got on a neighbors steer as he left the barn and came back on him about 8 in the eve with a small herd of 8 . I became a cow for the whole day seeing how they ranged through the day on 80 acres of field , woods, meadows. Best thing I ever did and remember the whole pattern of their daily habit. Someday I'm going to write a short story.
Reminds me of the times I was a little girl, when we had cattle, I would go out in the pasture and just sit there and watch them just to get some peace from a chaotic family life.
There was an old farmer in my area that used to spend a little down time with his cattle- seeing what they were up to, making sure they looked healthy, etc. Every now and then you need to take time out and smell the roses and maybe even the cattle.
Calves are usually naturally curious. I'm always amazed at they will come right up to me even when the cows hang back.
Pete, you do a great job of making me miss my youth. Watching you interact with animals lowers my blood pressure. Thanks for keeping it simple.
Nice try...maybe next time. I love how the two big bulls just lumber over to say hi and get their scratches. 🥰👍
I totally Love cows and cattle. I especially Love it when they come up to the camera, smell it then lick their nose. I loved it even more when they came up to you and licked you! That was so beautiful. :-)
Thank you for this time near your cattle.... Now I can see having a cow or two as a pet....
some of the happiest prettiest cows i've ever seen
Harken was what we named our red colored Bull years ago. That name is actually an Irish name that means deep red.
Name him Willie after Willie Nelson. He’s the red headed stranger.

I vote for Willie!
Pete. I wish I could go out with you to pet what cows I could. It is relaxing just to watch you out there and the cows come up to check you out or get petted. Thank you for the good video.
We show trust an love, we receive trust an love ! GOD BLESS !!!
Timmy the timid steer. What a cutie.
Clifford, as in the big red dog. Thank you for taking the time to make these great videos to share with us.
I grabbed my fly swatter and wanted to swat that fly on your shoulder. You made good progress with the calf for half day. We had several mean and dangerous steers at one time. I sure don't trust them. Being out in that pasture would be a vacation for me, I loved it.!
I love the sound when they're sniffing the microphone 😁
Thanks for another mellowing experience. Rowdy, for Rowdy Yates...Rawhide..Head em up...
My favorite thing about cows has always been their curiosity and inquisitiveness, they're just big, easily startled, pasture puppies.
Rosso could be a good name. It’s red in Italian but I’m sure you already knew that. I’ve been watching your channel for just over a year an enjoy all of your videos no matter the content. FYI it’s your personality an that smile that keeps me watching. I’ve always wanted to work on a farm an about a month ago I found that job. Shame it took almost 40 years to find but I have never had such a pleasurable job. Working with animals an nature doesn’t feel like work to me.
"Black-eye-rings-red-calf" that name really rolls of the tongue with ease.
Maybe “Clifford” like the big red dog haha! I also like the suggestion for Rusty
I have always loved how curious they are. They are cute!!!
I grew up on my grandparents farm, 170 head of just cows. We had one horned cow that looked a lot like Patty, she was wild as a March hare. Very very protective of her calves. You did not get close to her or her calf or she would bulldoze you. But she also was hands down the best momma cow we had. And threw some of the most beautiful calves ever.
The Red Barron. Stealthy, Smart, Quick.
Pete I think Farmall would be a good name for the little red calf !!
The cows on our farm was not as friendly as yours. I just love the way you take time to know your bigger animals. I have no problem with you naming the cows.
Cinnamon sounds good. Those bulls are the lovingest guys. Doc. yep I remember him. He was privileged to crawl thought the bars to get his own hay. Thanks for sharing. Iowa is watching. 30 degs. this morning with a good frost. :)
What a great way to spend part of an afternoon. Cimarron, much like cinnamon
Nice that Doc is trying to help
Those continuous NOSTRIL BLASTS are the best. You're spot on with the patient approach. Let their curiosity lead them; and it will. Cattle familiar with people movement, smell sounds and touch are so much easier to work. In less than an hour Little Brownie was close. Cows are so cool if you take time to 'read' them. Your cattle are comfortable around you. Very nice herd.
A friend of mine named G. His family bought a steer to grow out one year. They named the steer G. WHen Steer G went to freezer camp all the cuts were labeled G Rib Eye. G Ground. etc. That's my kind of humor.
Fred...I like Fred. Thx for the calming video Pete.
This reminds me of when I was a kid. My parents had a pond that did not hold water. They had the idea that they needed to run some pigs in the bottom to get it to hold water. I spent hours sitting out there trying to get close enough to them to pet them. It was so much fun.
Some of us see your herd more like family rather then dollar signs. I think that’s why some of us get confused with you naming them. Personally I believe it’s your farm, your life, your choice! I love this channel to the moon and back. I’m here just apologizing for all of us softies 😘
I’ve just watched this one year later-I don’t know how I missed such a wonderful video and I’m glad I caught it. Pete you make the most relaxing videos. The respect you give your family and animals is the biggest reason I watch your channel. I see your way of animal husbandry is the best. I am a meat eater but I do not believe that any animal should be mistreated for the time they are alive. I agree that it is ok to name your animals and pet them for their benefit. They have a higher quality of life than any animal that doesn’t get attention. And also any animal that gets to feed on grass is healthier and tastier than those that don’t. I thought store bought eggs were great and the first time I saw an egg that had an orange yolk I thought it was bad. 😂😂 I now know what I’ve been missing. Thank you for another great video.
Those cows just love you!! It's so funny seeing them go nose to nose with you. I like the name Chase for 'little one'. Maybe one day he will live up to his name and be the one knocking over your camera.
Is is fascinating to see their behavior from up close like that! Love it.
Hello Pete and Hillary. I know cows are curious so sooner or later he will come up to you. It shows you treat your cattle well there calm around you and that's great. Cattle that are treated well give back the same. I think a good name would be "James". Have a great day.
Yes it was relaxing which is good since I am watching it while in labor.
I get the feeling that it’s viewing day at the zoo and YOU are on view! They seem to be quite happy that they can view and interact with the two legged creature that responds to all their bellyaching every day, yup, I even think they are content and happy with the situation at hoof.
Pumpkin! i really enjoyed this video this was so nice an relaxing to watch
Ultra relaxing actually. I didn’t realize how calming making a friend could be!
Naming your animals that are going to butcher is great. They deserve a great life. Filled with care and affection. Then the time comes for them to complete their role. It’s a circle of life type thing. I have met farmers who don’t name their animals and treat them with no love. I like how you and your family do it. Animals that live a peaceful life somehow taste better then animals who live in fear their entire lives
Cattle are always fast when they are running towards an open gate or escaped on the road 😂
well you had a relaxing time trying to make friends with the calf and the other cattle seemed to enjoy your company
Name that beautiful and Red calf "Farmall" ...after another beautiful red part of the farm.
Everyone kept coming up to check on you. Like hey Pete are you OK? Lol. Love time spent with animals, it is so relaxing.
I love your gentleness with your cattle.
I enjoy how you are personable to your animals
The name Rowan(tree with red berries) name for that beautiful copper-colored calf!
Call the little one H! Thanks for another upload! missed ya those few days you took off.
5 yr old grandson says his name should be Clifford..... the little red cow ;)
I am stuck indoors due to my allergies right now. So I'm binge watching your videos. That's a really lovely and peaceful video, I love it! Oh dear, some their eyes are so gentle. I've done a little bit of horse whispering and can tell by their eyes how they're feeling that particular moment
Needed this for my Friday! Have a great weekend Pete

Enjoy your down time Mr. Pete!
Don't do it Little One. The guy in the red hat will turn ya into hamburger. LOL : ) That sniffing is funny. It's just a point of curiosity for the cattle. LOL Get him again Orden. NAME for a steer; Bumbuger
Pete, my friend, you remind me of our dear former President Ronald Reagan. He also, in his young days, found that if he just sat peacefully in the field, that natural curiosity would bring the animals to him rather than be too forward and scare them away. LOVE your videos!! Watch every one when you post here!! Keep up the wonderful sharing of your life on the land!!! ;o)
I love named animals. We named all of ours even the chickens. My first thought for your Red steer would be Rojo.
Very relaxing video. Thanks for reminding us. Keep trying with the Little Guy. You'll get there. I really enjoyed the video.
I’ve found that not looking at the cow/ calf directly helps. Less attention the better.
I love how the others keep coming to get pets instead of the calf you wanted.
True testimony as to how much you are loved in the bovine community!
Great video I’m looking forward to watching the market again have a great Sunday
We had a beautiful red Angus bull. His name was Apache. He would lumber up to my Mom and put his huge head to her elbow wanting to be petted!
Just plain (Red) sounds pretty good to me, very masculine. I wonder how many cattle's I could put on my little acre and a half of desert with plenty of well water. I was thinking sectioning it off into areas where grass can grow, grow areas and eat areas rotating of course

Chester for the little one . Take care Pete , thanks for sharing your day with us .
Calves are my favorite part of farming. When I was a kid, it was my job to feed all the babies on my sister’s dairy farm. Thank You Pete
My vote is that "Rudy" is "ruddy". Good to see you able to take some time to just hang with the herd. Doc is trying to show him the ropes.
I have had people say the same thing to me. They don't understand how I can name an animal who is destined for my table. I sell beef, and the one thing that I have heard a lot of is "I don't want any pictures of them." It's the disconnect of people and the food on their table. I've been used to it all my life. It's natural to me.
Thanks as always for bringing us along while you hang out with the cattle. Was my favorite thing to do when I was a kid.
It's nice to see you invest time to know the little one. Have a amazing day.
I love some of the names suggested for the little one. Let me add another suggestion - Snickers. Enjoying your videos.
I have no problem naming the cattle either. I grew up on both of my grandparents farms. One named the cattle the other did not I had no problem either way when it was time to butcher them. Although I did find it easier to separate the cattle with a name I knew which one he wanted.
"Jupiter" red, beautiful and distant. Love your videos!
it's nice to see you taking a little time to enjoy the day
Great video ... thank you for sharing. It won't be long now as close as he got to you! :) He is a great looking boy ... My vote would be Theo (gift from God), Roane (red-haired) or Rowan (little red one). Thank you Pete, it was relaxing. Loved the cows sniffing the camera.
I like the name Roux. Give him that Louisiana touch. It will make you thing of a good gumbo. Like your stories.
This video was great. After a stressful week, this was relaxing. I actually watched it twice Friday night. Thank you for this.
Hi Pete, I just love the time and effort you put forth with your animals. Yes, they are our food. Nothing wrong with caring for them too.
The little one is cute, for sure. A boy... I'd call him, Bruno. There was a friendly dog in the family called exactly that. Be well.
Great video and information 😊👍 maybe name him pepper since he's red lol
It's really cool to see all the personalities in the herd.
Rudy. I loved the final video shot. Your hat blowing off captures how real farm life is portrayed on this channel.
Your videos provide me a bit of relaxing time in this crazy world. My grandpa had a small farm in Michigan and a lot of the things you put in your videoed remind me of my summers i spent with him. Thanks for sharing your life with us.
You have a great way of bringing back childhood memories. My dad had a 656 International tractor and we as kids made our cows and calves our pets! Keep them coming!!
I always love your videos pete! outdoors and farmlife has the same effect on me as it does you. the city stresses me out and this resets me. thank you 🇨🇦
