This Madlad does what every knitter is horrified of. Cutting your knitting without sewing down firmly Looks awesome don‘t get me wrong. if you buy a commercial blanket and habe a lot of it ,its fine. if you have less , i recommend sewing the lining to the knit first and then cut.

The orientation of the rows is vertical, like the character model but if you want it to look more like chainmail you can rotate the fabric 90 degrees so that the rows are all horizontal. Thats how maille typically looks in real life and should probably help sell the illusion more.

What becomes obvious handling maille it that hung one way, with rows around an arm or torso, it will better expand and contract to fit.

This is incredible. I have a fantasy costume I've been putting together, and didn't know how I was going to do the armor for it. As someone with chronic pain, I can't wear something as heavy as proper mail. I never would have thought of this method myself, and I'm really happy you shared your insight. I do have one question: how did you make sure the knitted fabric didn't unravel as you were making these pieces? Your kit looks amazing. thanks for helping me out with mine :)

sorry for the late reply, but after cutting you just got to be careful, and after you put a lot of acrylic on it it'll be pretty stiff and be less likely to unravel. But if you want extra security, I recommend hand sewing around the edges (at least 1 inch from the edge) the same way I sewed the knit onto the fabric

Great tutorial, bro. I was looking for a video to show how to knit or crochet that actual knit fabric, though, because I'm trying to make a bit of chainmail for a doll with reeeeeally small yarn. (I will figure out how to make this!) Working with doll scale adds bulk way too quickly, so a knit alternative would help. With cutting knit fabric for human scale I would just warn about the knit fabric fraying while working with it. Knits are basically a single thread that's strategically woven; if it's cut anywhere, it can unravel. You didn't seem to have too much trouble with it, though. I agree with using the acrylic paint too. I normally hate using acrylic paint on a fabric project because it gets so stiff, but I was actually planning to use paint on whatever I can make for chainmail because the stiffness would make it feel closer to metal and a bit less like fabric. Your chainmail turned out really great.

I'm glad you found my video! Yeah, cutting the knit can be scary since it can unravel, but sewing around the edges can stop it from unraveling! (Also the acrylic stiffness helps too)
