To clarify, she is not making essential oil. She is making an oil infusion. Completely different. And while grape seed has a light smell it also has a very short shelf life and heating it up shortens it even further. True essential oil, never goes bad (with the exception of citrus oils). This infusion will go rancid and in three months or less. I find this video extremely misinforming. As retailer who sells EO's I also find it frustrating to have to constantly re-educated people because of this kind of misinformation.

People are so critical, often without any polite, beneficial advice in exchange for their criticism. an essential oil is defined as:a natural oil typically obtained by distillation and having the characteristic fragrance of the plant or other source from which it is extracted. before there were advanced machines to pull every single drop of potent oil from plants, this method is how it was done. so, this is an essential oil as she is extracting oils from the plant. we as consumers are just spoiled by the intense concentration of the machine, etc extraction so sometimes it's difficult to appreciate a simplified extraction. thanks for the ❤video!

There are also cold pressed " Essential oils". These do not use a steam distillation process and they do not use any heat. She said in the video that she is making an infused oil. Herbal Infused oils are amazing and can be used when making herbal salves, herbal balms, and ointments. They can be used to create wonderful Body butter creams, face creams, handmade soap and more. Essential Oils are not supposed to be used as is straight out of the bottle on your skin although I know currently there are many who do this because they do not know it is supposed to be cut. You are supposed to dilute them with a carrier oil - the amount varies based on the plant matter being used. Herbal Infused Oils when complete already have that extra carrier oil (Ex: her Grapeseed oil or Jojoba oil) and can be used as an Herbal Oil right onto the skin. Anywa... Herbal Infused Oils are just as Amazing :)

Wonderful tutorial, just thought you should know however that the reason those store bought oils cost so much is because they are super concentrated and are the extracted (essential) oils from the plants where what you’re making is known as an infused oil (which for those who don’t know is also effective and has many of the same benefits just not as strong as the essential oils alone) a good way to illustrate this is take a couple pieces of styrofoam and drip some pure essential oils on one and the infused oil on the other and you’ll see the difference in strength as the pure essential oil will dissolve the foam. God bless.

Sorry, it isn’t negativity. She is lovely but it isn’t essential oil, it is an infusion. There is a huge difference between them. You have hydrosol, tincture, tea (which is an infusion in water), infusion in oil, essential oils. All she needs to do is change the title of her video to “Infusion”, then it would all be good. I think perhaps we were disappointed not to see the distilling process.

Hello. Verty interesting, thank you. I wanted to suggest another method of low temperature control that might help. You crush and bruise all your flowers first, then put them in a glass bottle with your grape seed oil, close the bottle top losely, then place this bottle in a deep saucepan of water on a low heat. Bring the water up to boil and then just very gently simmer for several hours. This would keep the temperature constant, below boiling 100c/212f and stop it going above what you want. I have a fantastic French oven which allows me to set the temperature anywhere from 300c down to 50c (and with the fan this is perfect for drying fruits and mushrooms etc).

This is great for the products you are making, but it is NOT an essential oil, it is infused oil! When you use alcohol, it is a tincture. There is a reason you pay so much money for 1oz of essential oil it is because it requires so much plant material to make a small amount by a distilling process and it is extremely concentrated unlike the infused oil you made.

Juan, the term "essential oil" comes from the time of the alchemists. During one of their many experiments, they discovered a fluid that did not mix with water. They thought they had discovered the "quintessential", or fifth element, after earth, water, wind and fire. It has nothing to do with being essential for the plant or for humans. Furthermore, watuwaitn4 is spot on with his comment on this not being an essential oil. Her products might be very good products for different uses, but it is NOT an essential oil. It will have totally different properties, so please do not compare essential oils to her extracts.

I think I, like many people, actually did a search for “how to make essential oil” knowing full well that essential oil extraction requires specialized equipment, also knowing I would find instructions for home oil extraction methods like this one, which is much more accessible to the general public and will work for my intended use. I find I was right to do so. If only essential oil will work for whatever one needs to do, I imagine one will have done their homework on the subject. This works for me! Thanks

I'm inclined to agree - I think that her heart is in the right place, and she seems like a nice lady. I don't think that she is willfully trying to be deceptive - unfortunately she refers to essential oil several times in conjunction with her preparation, and compares the price of essential oil to her oil extract, and shows a bottle of a commercial EO - so it would be confusing to a beginner... Essential oil is very different from an extraction into a vegetable oil.

Nice video. I just wanted to tell you that what you made is macerated oil instead of essential oil. To make essential oils you need to use a method of distillation and you actually get the oil of the plant. I would recommend you use dried plant instead of fresh as fresh flowers still contain water which will make your product likely to go rancid. Best way is to actually doing it over a few weeks and changing your plant material every week or so. Cheers!

Thank you for this beautiful video. I am a big fan of infused oil. I just discovered your vlog, will check out others. Just wanted to clarify to your viewers incase anyone thinks infused oil is same as essential oils of plants that we usually buy would like advise the following: The essential oils that you buy tend to be expensive because they are the essence of a plant, basically the extract from inside the plant that is extracted usually via steam distillation or solvent extraction or Carbon dioxide extraction. They are not the same as infused oil ( which is shown in this video but infused oil also has tremendous benefits & although not exactly same as Essential oils which we tend to buy, infused oils can be made at home as per this excellent video and will have many of the benefits as shop bought essential oils but not all the benefits of essential oils. Essential oils are highly concentrated extract of a plant s Essence where as infused oil is like making tea except you use oil instead of water to infuse so many of the goodness from the plant or flower will infuse into the oil.

There's nothing dangerous about a lilac infused oil used for scenting lotions, soaps, and household cleaners, as she stated very clearly in the video as her intention. She does misunderstand the difference between an essential oil and an infused oil, but for her purposes, either will work. It would be great if she corrected her mistake, but it is an honest one. All of these angry people are doing more harm, in my opinion, in the manner of their correction than any harm she has done by misunderstanding the nature of what she's making -- or more precisely, the nature of what she had been purchasing. (She seems to understand that she's making an infused oil, but she just seems to be a bit mixed up in believing that an essential oil is the same thing.) And for the record, infused oils do contain essential oils, as long as they are kept covered during the infusion process. Otherwise, the essential oils, which are volatile, will evaporate. So a properly infused oil will have the same benefits, along with some others besides, of a true essential oil that is diluted in a carrier oil -- because that is basically what it is, except that other oil-soluble constituents of the herb besides only essential oils will also be extracted into the carrier. So, if anything, what she is making can in many applications be the better choice.

This is an herbal infusion, not an essential oil. An essential oil would be extracted by distilling or pressing and would only include oil from the herb (lilac in this case) not grape seed oil. Infusions can be used to make products where a carrier oil is required such as a soap or a lotion. Thanks for help on infusions though. I am starting a foot massaging business and regardless of infused or essential oils...I am going to use Infused Oil. Yes, I know about how each is extracted and I would prefer Infused, just like this video. 1. It is a simpler way of making them for what I want to do. 2. The smell and benefits are still the same. The only thing that is different is that one is more concentrated and I don't want alcohol in my oils. I don't want to make a carrier based oil either. I also don't want to gather tons of it to make one bottle. Aside from that, Keila is such a great person. I love her enthusiasm and video's. I have Scribed Keila. Keep up the awesome videos! ♥

I appreciate your video and am considering making my own EOs as well. I do wish to say though: you mentioned that you started making your own EOs because you got tired of paying $10/bottle. First of all, the brand now that you’re using, they’re a typical conventional drug store brand. I’ve looked into them, their labels aren’t very trustworthy. Also, even just 1/2 oz of pure, organic, therapeutic grade essential oil takes a minimum of 10 hours to distill. I agree that store-bought essential oils are highly-priced, but that’s also coming strictly from a consumer/customer perspective. We feel that way because we don’t see the time, effort, energy or money that’s spent on producing high-quality oils. I felt the same way as you before I started making my own colloidal silver. Once I started making my own colloidal silver and selling it, I started relating to and understanding sale prices better. And I’ve also been tempted to raise my own product prices to make my own effort time and energy worthwhile, which is something I never thought I’d do. Anyway, good video overall, I just wanted to add that.

Good tutorial on how to make infused oil (different from essential oil). Keep in mind this works better with some plants than it does for others--plants whose desired chemicals are hydrophilic (I believe ginger, lemons, cilantro, etc. are some examples) will not dissolve well in a cooking oil, which is hydrophobic. An alcohol extract may be a better call for said molecules

it's not an essential oil, it's an infused oil. the reason why the "one unce little bottle" is so expensive is because it takes a myriad of lavender to make oil. the plant itself is pressed till every drop comes out. it's 100% lavender, just like the grapeseed oil you bought is 100% grapeseed. you get what you pay for. it's like comparing a tiny bottle of thick dishsoap to a huge bottle of watery dishsoap. the tiny bottle is more expensive because it's 100% pure, the bigger bottle is less expensive because it's 70% water and not soap. big doesn't always mean more.

For those purists posting negative comments, this is NOT essential oil, but her procedure yielded *way more* of a _very similar_ product for considerably less money, compared to buying the 1-oz bottle. For most uses (cosmetic products, air fresheners), this is a very good option. Like.

I don't get why people keep calling it "essential oil". Essential oil is the product of distillation (and you need A LOT of herbs), infused oil is this one and tinctures are extracts using alcohol (you can use other things in place of alcohol, but I can't remember now). Then there are tisanes (herbs infused in water). No intention to be rude, but this is misinformation.

PwnageDev But even boiling off the alcohol you will still have sugars left behind from the vodka. Which would not be actual essential oils. I've been a brewer for quite awhile, I know the chemistry behind brewing liquor and beer. Boiling any alcohol will actually infuse some sugar into the oils. Sugar is VERY hard to completely boil off. Only actual way to create real essential oils is distilling. No sugar and grain added like there is in alcohol.

For Christ shake, essential oil is terminology for a specific product, not "essential" as in your daily vocabulary. Grapeseed oil isn't the most used oil for infusion simply because it's chemically unstable and have to use fresh. pple only use it as infusion base for cooking purpose as it contain omega 6. Everything abt this vid was wrong, so nothing to hate.

This is a nice video for infused oil, but infused oil and essential oil are two very different things. Infused oil may suite the purposes you are using them for, as you stated in you video, however you cannot compare the price of essential oil bought in store to your infused oil. Essential oils are more potent then infused oils are, and it is made through a completely different process. The process would involve Distilling the herb or flower you're using, it would be placed in with water, and as the water evaporates the oils from the plant are carried up through the vapour and are separated in the system. The reason you get such a small amount of ESSENTIAL oil at the store for the price it is at is because the plant materials you just used would only yield a tiny amount of essential oil, 100% concentrated. Some essential oils are cheaper than others because they dilute the oil with another to make more quantity, and market it as 100% natural essential oil, to make it sound pure, its not a 100%, for example, lilac, but the lilac used will be 100% pure. I hope this helps you understand the difference between essential oils and infused oils, as well as why the price varies by so much. The video essential oils home made - steam distillation can show the process used for essential oils. In the mean time you might consider re titling your video to say infused oil not essential.

great job in doing it yourself. I understand exactly your point on making your own type of oil and adding oils to use to crush out the benfits of the lilac. People sometimes get mad when you are teaching other people a more affordable way of doing it. Keep on posting. I am also a retailer of essential oils and this is another way of getting a less stronger benfit but more affordable and usable in your products. And this you can apply on your skin because it is an iffusion. While the essential oil you are going to have to dillute it anyway in your products. So either way similar effects. Good job.

1 ounce of essential oil will always be more expensive than cooking plant materials in 16 ounces of grape seed oil, because cooking plants in oil is technically an infusion. This is comparing apples to oranges. That bit of plant/flower material you put into the pot would only yield a few drops of pure/true essential oil. For you to come up with a whole ounce of a true essential oil, you would need to steam distill a great deal of your garden resources. Then you would see why a company has to charge more than grape seed oil for a medicinal product. I hope this video hasn't turned too many people away from buying quality essential oils, under such false pretenses.

Lovely video. As an aromatherapist, I pray you don't mind if I tell you the difference in natural and synthetic oils. Synthetic oils have been bleached. You know they are not organic as there is no organic stamp on the bottle and te bottles are usually plastic or clear see through bottles. Organic and pure oils must be in dark glass as light destroys the odour molecules and turns the pure oil toxic. You are going to a lot of tender loving care when you infuse your oils, so it might be best to honour your loving work with organic or cold pressed oils as the oil you infuse your plants with. Sharing is caring Love Robyn xxx
