A simple concept that may take months to become familiar with for a neophite like me. Great explanation, now i know how to train direction changer in rate mode, not only "turn with both sticks".

I just got Liftoff and within a matter of hours something in my brain clicked and I figured out exactly how to compensate for yaw and roll when flying forward. It's not even conscious really. Amazing what sims can teach you.

This was very helpful to visually see what's happening at a slower rate. Thanks

For a given turn on a path the ratio of roll:yaw increases as pitch is farther forward ... more speed, more roll needed. I knew this, I understood it, but somehow when you do a video like this, it's new information to me, or reached a new area of my brain parts.

now I know why I am a flying turd on the simulator, literally, I am like wow wtf. So to let you know your time in making these videos is worth the time. I have soldered on my first board (successfully) because of your resent video with Randy and I will be doing my first build because of videos like yours. do not let the haters bring you down

This video gives some good insight into how a quad turn with up tilt. I discovered recently while exploring this concept that there's a way of setting up your rates for yaw and roll which makes coordinating turns as your describing here easier and is worth mentioning. If you have your rates set similarly at some value then depending on your uptilt to coordinate your turns requires some amount of yaw input and some amount of roll input and the amounts of each will likely be disproportionate. Developing the muscle memory to coordinate 2 disproportionate inputs is tough especially while balancing 2 other controls. It's much easier to concentrate on coordinating 2 controls if the inputs required are proportional or requiring the same amount of travel for each. You can actually achieve this by coordinating the rates instead of the stick move. Try and concentrate on moving the sticks evenly and together and then observe what which input is giving too much or too little and adjust the appropriate rate to compensate until the turns are coordinated as you move the sticks together evenly. I just started playing with this idea and I've started a thread about it on rcg. My quad Flys much nicer as a result and just feels great.

Your lessons with the FreeRider sim are worth their weight in gold. I started out not being able to GET to a gate, much less go THROUGH it! LOL When I flew a real quad for the first time, it felt totally familiar, and I didn't get much urge to use auto level. Anyone learning all this with a real quad is going to spend more time (And $$) getting to a certain level, than someone who has used a simulator. Plus the sim is fun! It can't get lost, stuck in trees, and when you crash, you can start over again instantly. And you don't need to stop and change batteries all the time. Maybe when computers get fast enough, the simulators will get so great, that real quads will become obsolete. LOL I saw a video of this motorcycle rider, and I thought he was the greatest motorcycle rider I had ever seen. Someone seemed sad when they pointed out it was just a video game. It looked so real.

Oh the days of wood landing pads. You make it hard to forget :) Seriously though I watched this video about 3 years ago and didnt realize how many zip ties you used until now lol.

This was very helpful. I have been flying line of site RC Helis and planes for around 15 years and now that FPV is a thing I am an infant. Now I need to learn a new set of thumb rules based on what I see through the camera instead of the sky. Fun Fun!!!

Been flying for several years.. but with the larger camera drones.. Started flying racers and mini's about a year ago. Easiest thing to do is to get off the ground in self leveling mode and switch to acro. Roll slightly and THEN yaw... easier to turn.. If you yaw first, your vision is leaning the opposite of your turn and you will have to roll twice as much to lean into the turn in the correct direction.. Just a thought..

I could never hit the gates in the sim by yawing first. It works for large turns, like 90 degrees or more, but for slight adjustments it feels like the drone goes into a sideways skid and I have no idea where I’m actually aimed. What helps me is tipping into a slight roll first, then yawing in the direction of the roll as I level out so that I can see where I’m going.

I never thought about this aspect, but it is in fact quite clear, that you have to do it this way. I do fly much in horizon mode, and I crash constantly when trying out arco, maybe, because I never thought about these details. I do use roll when turning (as I have to when flying helicopter), but maybe its not enough and your video helped me out, to conisder it more

Struggling with Acro mode, no progress at all with so many trial & crashes... so decided to learn the basics. Your explanation is super easy to understand, and your suggestion of how to practice is easy to do it... Many many thanks as this Acro practice has been a little depressing with such little progress over the past few days. Will learn more! Cheers!

this is the best video I have seen for how to fly in rate, acro, manual, 3D mode. I also used to mistakenly think the same thing also. I always thought that the roll and yaw angle movements were based on the model being parallel to the ground, instead of the angles being based off the pitch axis. excellent video and demonstration.

Great explanation! I was watching more modern videos trying to get this explanation and was coming up short. This is perfect!! With about 10 hours on a SIM using Acro, I'm still struggling with controlled turns. I thought balancing yaw and roll perfectly would be the ticket, but then a slide through turns. It seems that to bank a turn you really need the bottom of the quad facing the opposite direction you're turning (not parallel, but probably at least a 45° angle). It hasn't clicked for me yet, and being a long time Angled Mode flyer, I'm struggling not to just rely on yaw and forward tilt.

Joshua Bardwell You mentioned about Acro mode coordinated turns a few times. Is there a difference with stabilised modes like Horizon ? Reason I ask is that I fly Horizon 80% of the time and I use this technique that you describe (albeit subconsciously).

+Tony Leyland Expressive Imagery In autolevel mode, the flight controller attempts to maintain a fixed angle of pitch or roll which is proportional to the stick deflection. So imagine you are holding the pitch stick forward to cause the copter to pitch forward 20 degrees. Now you input left yaw, and do not input any roll. As the copter begins to yaw, the roll coupling I described will occur. BUT! The flight controller will automatically coordinate the turn for you! Because the pitch and roll sticks are continuing to command 20 degrees front pitch and 0 degrees roll. So with autolevel mode, yaw can be imagined as occurring relative to the earth's frame of reference, rather than the copter's frame of reference. Practically speaking, you will still put some roll into each turn, because when you turn, you want the copter to roll into the turn, not stay flat. But if you test out completely flat turns (no roll input at all) in acro mode vs. self-level mode, you should see that in acro mode, you end up rolled to the side after a 90 degree yaw, and in self-level mode, you don't. This is one more reason why autolevel is easier for beginners. They can make pure yaw turns without getting completely out of whack.

it's relatively easy to fly . quad copter 101 tutorials magnificent. acro, well, i call it smash it up mode. you must be much more well of than humble me.

This issue (or side effect you might want to say) has been addressed in the later betaflight releases, where you can input your camera angle and the fc mixes the roll and yaw and makes it appear as if you have no camera angle in terms of control authority. I haven't tried it myself because I am used to the mixing, but it could make flying a lot easier

+Gryffin Cook I guess it's a cool feature. I have gotten used to learning to manually coordinate turns, and I like knowing that when I push full roll deflection, that I'm not getting any yaw mixed in, even if that produces an unexpected camera effect. Actually, I sometimes like that effect and think it could be hard to duplicate otherwise.

so like i visualized when i first started both joysticks left left or right right.... im a rookie one month later 4 toy drone in trees in the park, now im gonna start fpv with tiny whoop, i believe thats a good place to start, thanks for the excellent information once again

thanks, got it working and crashing the drone that is , money savings lol, even got a usb controller to work, yes ive gotten so much better in just 10 min , barrel rolls seem the easiest lol but that doesnt teach you how to fly. the coordinated turns are tricky but with some practice ill get there. once again thanks

I’m just starting and had this very question because yaw didn’t seem flat. Also noticed that initial opposite yaw, then roll and pitch makes a more level bank. Can’t get the feel or result of banking if I move both yaw and roll in the same direction initially. Holding the quad in hand at tilt, the yawing in the turn direction shows you why it pushes quad away from turn. Once turn has initiated, the yaw must go back in direction of turn because that’s what sets the pitch angle back to original position coming out of the turn.

nice video... something to think about. i am just learning FPV acro now after flying horizon mode to get used to flying FPV. went back and watched some of my videos as i like to document all my flights to watch back and learn from. i notice on a turn i tend to roll first and then use yaw to bring it around faster. not sure if i am creating bad habits or just my own style since there doesnt seem to be an instruction manual to how to fly quads.

This is what I was really confused about lol. I thought it would hold that forward pitch through a yaw left or right. Messes with my head lol

Yeah, I have made the same mistake here recently when I started flying rate mode.. in self leveling mode it functions differently from what I have noticed.
