    A great beginner compost guide. That 2:1 brown:green volume ratio is far less intimidating than most other how-to videos out there. But @8:28 "just a pile in the back of the garden"? while you are standing in front of your picture-perfect garden? LOL! But composting is one of those things that keep us humble, I think. Just when I thought "this is simple; idk what all the fuss is about", black soldier fly larvae moved into my "soil factory", and started eating all the lovely compost in the making, leaving nothing.

  • @eliandkate

    @eliandkate

    Do you know that the poo from black soldier fly costs an absolute fortune? It’s great for the soil 😍

  • @oreopaksun2512

    @oreopaksun2512

    Жыл бұрын

    @@eliandkate Yes! It is supposed to encourage your plants to build defenses against other bad, chewing insects. It costs a fortune bc there is precious little of it (the buggers are SO efficient, I swear, they go through the poo a couple of times if you don't feed regularly). And separating out....NOT easy, and you still get eggs which hatch out into larvae in your beds, and eventually a swarm of adult flies in your yard. In my case, screened pool enclosure for yard. Neither larvae or adult are harmful in any way, but guests can be a little freaked out; the maggots and fly are extra large compared to the housefly. The good: in the summer when they are in full munch mode, I don't work on Bokashi bc BSFL will eat down EVERYTHING, cooked food, meat and dairy included, and smell is minimal (as you said, if it smells, cover with browns). And, they come back....I thought they were gone after the freeze we had this winter, but nope! Can you hear them chomping?

    Hey, thanks for this I am new to gardening and composting seems important to start! Can I use the wood ash from fire?

  • @eliandkate

    @eliandkate

    Жыл бұрын

    Theoretically yes, however there are a few things to think about Don’t add it frequently-wood ash can contain high levels of calcium which can change the PH of soul so be sparing Don’t use wood ash from treated woods, basically think about what could contaminate your compost Make sure to add it with appropriate levels of green and brown rather than as a substitute for one
