Hey man, Game dev here. This is genuinely one the best tutorials I have seen in a long time. Genuine tips, great workflow.
@YakOfArt
Жыл бұрын
Hey thank you! I've learned a lot of my modeling from a game dev perspective of making stuff midpoly and quick. I'm glad the tutorial is useful, I'm still learning how to teach better, and there's a couple things I wish I did or explained better.
I'm glad that I am watching your video. I'm pretty slow when it comes to 3D modeling and animation and it's still taking me a long time to improve my skills. I'm constantly improving my skills when I get on the computer.
I remember watching AKIRA for the first time (I still have the VHS tape I bought the comic book convention here in Philly), and being blown away by the opening sequences too. And now finally, years later, using Blender to recreate what we saw. Thank you for your videos. I've been through that same process that you mentioned of "am I doing this the hard way" or "the long way" too. I think we ALL do that at first, because eventually we figure out what works for each of us, and then we pick up tips and speed as we learn. I've learned so much from watching you (especially that Offset Even checkbox that I didn't even know was there - in this video), and how no one else I've watched even mentions it?!? I was straightening them by hand (which should be labeled as 3rd degree m*rder!) until today. Again, thank you for you videos, they are making a difference in my work. GREATLY. (subbed!)

This is such an entertaining and lovely comment! I always try to remember, when I'm teaching, what it was like when I was looking for education on a specific topic. One of the things I loved most, was the educator considering me and my skill level. I'm always striving to get better at that as the teacher, and comments like this are very valuable feedback. Thanks for the sub, we're happy to have you 🙏
I'll be using this soon! Thank you.
Nice work - you're really hitting that aesthetic.

Hey Yakovlev! Just found your channel and really like your stuff. This is a really good tutorial. I'm a 2D designer trying to add Blender into my skillset but haven't been able to stay consistent with it yet. Going to try this later today. Appreciate the work.
Yo new sub here~! thanks for sharing your stuff and making blender struggles relatable! sometimes I do need that reminder about doing the hard & tedious way. Will cheer you on man!

How did you get the colors to match Akira so well? Looks proper 2d in the other video, nice stuff!
@YakOfArt
Жыл бұрын
Thanks! It was painstakingly done by eye. Looking back and forth between my scene and then the animation. There's also some upscaled "remastered" versions out there where the colors are different, so I had to kind of take all of that into consideration.
How did you make the sides at a 45 degree angle? Right after the bit where you say use alt+E the open the extrude menu, you flatten the sides and don’t say how. How did you do that?

Bevel the selected line instead of the faces, figured it out lol😅
When I bevel the edge of the buildings as you do at 6:52, the edges on top and bottom don't conform to the bevel and maintain their sharp edge and stick out. What am I doing wrong?
Hello I have been following the tutorial but how do you make the edges flat like at 6:52? The video suddenly jumps to it being flat without instructions and I need help with that. Thank you.
@YakOfArt

I beveled the corner edge using control+b.
This is so much pain for me, scrolling through videos of city buildings. Yours seems to be the best one so far but hey, i'm still stuck in my scene so that's a forfeit. Guess I'll to have to find my 3D artist now haha

Hopefully the free building models from this video help you with your scene at least 😅
Whenever I inset it does not give me squares. It gives me more of a rectangle thing. How do you get it to give you those perfect squares? At like 5:50
@YakOfArt
Жыл бұрын
Hmm, aside from the issue that the shapes might not be squared from the start, I would suggest applying the scale to the model in object mode, and then trying again. If the original shape is even slightly a rectangle, the inset shape will be even more exaggerated. try this effect on the default cube and see if you get the same issue.
hi I download your pack but i cannot find how to put the building lights, it would be nice if you could help me. THX

Are you using blender or another program?
6:52 How did you do the corner thingy? I can't recreate it, even if I copy your settings for the bevel, it looks like an earthquake happened and it had amplitude 9.

Haha, been there! In Edit mode, if you have that face selected, you can hit Ctrl + R to add a Loop Cut. And the. I scroll up on the mouse wheel to increase loop cuts. If you're asking how to bevel the corner before that, it's Ctrl + B.
How did you select all the glasses at once ?

When I had it all selected from making it, I instantly applied a material to it. Then later, in edit mode, I selected it based on the material.

@@YakOfArt Hey thanks for the help here. How are you getting the edges from the loopcut to ONLY show up on the selected faces? When I try to add a loop cut, it adds it to the entire object and not just the face that will have the windows. Hope that makes sense, thanks!
@YakOfArt

hey man you really need to do better on your detailed communication. you say "i" two times and boom perfect for you. But when I do it's a disaster. By no means am I bashing or trying to rude with you but you need to explain what you're doing and not get ahead cause I can tell you've been doing this for a long time so you tend to leave out bits and pieces. I'm stuck on the inset part after subdividing the windows.
