How to Make Charcoal | Cleaning and Using an Antique Icebox

This week, I make biochar in the wood stove, clean out and prepare the icebox for relocation in the cabin, wrap the base of the front porch columns and collect water from the stream.

We used empty milk cartons and gallon jugs frozen with water in our ice chests and vintage ice box. When the ice melted, you could refreeze it in winter. When I was in 4H in the 1960s and we showed cattle at the county fair. We camped for the week on the fair grounds. The fair electrical system for the camps would not support a refrigerator but one of our families had a vintage ice box which we used. The same family owned a food cold locker plant so ice was readily available.

Shawn, have you considered cutting a small access door through the exterior wall and then putting a box outside on the porch for cold weather food storage? You could have a sealed door inside and then an exterior vent you could throttle outside to set the storage box cold temperature. A great place to store food cooled by outside temps but accessible from the inside.

I made charcoal when I was a teenager back in the old country, using sod. Also, they used to make natural gas... if you call it that!... with brut coal. The principle is simply to burn the coal with very little oxygen. Then the remnant is charcoal. Coal was for rich people, the charcoal was for "We the people". Stay safe, and enjoy the season.

When I was young I remember going to see the ice man to buy a big block of ice for the old fridge we had in the cellar. It was where my dad kept his rabbit, venison and other meats mom wouldn’t let him put in our regular fridge in the kitchen. It kept stuff really cold. It had been in my grandfather’s house and when he passed away my dad brought it home. My dad loved antiques.

Shawn just a suggestion get a tighter container and drill a hole in the center of the lid and you will get a better quality charcoal. When the smoke stops and starts to flame from the hole leave it for 30 more minutes and you get a complete glass sounding charcoal. You may even be able to put an airtight container with a hole in the top on the top of the wood stove with a hot fire. I enjoy every video thank for your knowledge and videos.

I stumbled on the water jugs as ice blocks my first year into living on my property in a trailer. At a certain point in winter my propane fridge stops cooling so I take 2, 1 gallon jugs that are frozen and place them on the top shelf and keep the food below that...works like a charm and i always have another 2 frozen outside ready to rotate in. My question is how do you freeze those jugs once winter is over? Lol...

We had a spring that flowed out of the high bank of the river and into a short stream on the floodplain before flowing into the river at our hunting camp in the Adirondacks. The water was perfectly good to drink and cook with. We assumed the river water was not safe due to beaver and hunting camps miles upstream. When we had heavy rain, the river came up and flooded our spring stream. When we knew rain was coming, we got several days water ahead. The river typically came up fast and went down fast. There was a ford near our camp used by hunting camps downstream. One brave (and foolish) soul tried to cross the ford at high water when the river was raging. He tipped his CJ5 or CJ7 Jeep over midstream on the driver's side. I don't know how he ever got it out and it was a wonder he didn't drown.

After World War II, my father and I made an ice box. You can use galvanized sheets metal, the best is copper sheets metal to box in the interior nailed/screwed to the exterior walls and door (s). Creating an air chamber on all vertical surfaces, the ice will be dropped in a galvanized center chamber with a bottom drain. The door (s) should be insulated just as well with a very tight and secured lock. A large ice block, depending on its size should be placed in the center chamber, it could last up to a week. I would not recommend to consume its defrosted water, unless absolutely necessary. It can be used for other purposes, such as laundry, or watering plants. Bonne chance,
