How to Make Burlap Micarta for knife handles by Berg Knife Making

How to Make Burlap Micarta for knife handles by Berg Knife Making.
In this how-to video Dan Berg from www.Bergknifemaking.com experiments with making burlap micarta with dyed burlap.
Micarta is typically laminated and pressed paper or cloth material. The finished product is water resistant, very durable and varies greatly in appearance dependent on what materials were used. Micarta can be used in a variety of DIY projects but is normally associated with custom knife handles or scales. We used fiberglass resin and a home made micarta press to make these unique knife handles.

I really like your videos. Not super-technical ( which I like ). Your approach is very understandable. It is also nice to see someone creating cool stuff in a shop that doesn't have every fancy tool ever made. I didn't realize that making micarta was an option. Now I can't wait to give it a try. The wood chip and scotchbrite versions were awesome.

Tips for dry fiber like that, sand a little bit more, and than laminate the entire top side with 2 or 3 layer resin, and sanded flat 😁 (i did this on layup carbon fiber). hope you get the point

hey.......burlap is a great idea......you could more than likely fix the stained scales by adding a few coats of CA glue to seal the fibers better.....CA responds very well with most resins.

Good Idea. I was trying to think of other ways to stain the material

Another great vid, the great thing about you finding out that dying the burlap is not a good idea is that we do not have to find that out tghe hard way. More people should show what happens when a good idea may or may not be a good idea...was it a water based dye, what about an oil based paint or tinter, I have used dyes in resin before with no issue, but they were suppiled by the manufacturer

A cloth dye would probably work better.

Maybe dyeing the resin and not the burlap would get you where you want to go?
