How to make birch bark handle for a Laplander blade
I visited Roselli's factory some time ago and I bought two of their biggest blades, Sami -Laplander knife blades. These kind of blades are called "Leuku" in Finnish. I desided to do birch bark handles for them. I wish this opens your eyes how to do it. As you may notice, it's rather labouries to do it.
I think there's going to be a video soon introducing these knifes when ever they will be ready.
Music in this video comes from Ulla Pirttijärvi, Finnish Sami singer.
Look at video Project Lapin leuku and you will see these laplander knifes finished www.youtube.com/watch?v=g9Imx...

Do it during midsummer while birchies wet, full of water and bark loosens very easily. You can notice the differens.

I have never really listened this musik but it sure is great. Felt the same.
When getting the top layers off the Birch bark, I found using a scrap piece of wood with an end cut at a 45 degree angle worked amazing for scraping the bark evenly and quickly. Saved my thumbs a lot of rubbing!
They look awesome. Thanks for showing how to make them. :-)

Hello Osmo! I collected a little amount of birch wood with the bark in its place because the government cleaned both sides from a mountain road. Some of them are a little dry and I want to knows if I can take out the bark without broke. Is possible I will need a little time in water for became more workable? Thanks for your time and your excellent videos!

Hi! I know that cleaning of an old bark away from the wood might be tricky. I have always collected birch bark from living tree (legally) which is then cut down. It loosens very easily during mid summer. I don't know if water soaking helps at all.

Hi Osmo, love your vids! I have i question, im making a birch bark puukko with reindeer antler as bolster and end cap, and i was wondering if heating the knife in the oven to glue the birch tar could damage the antler? All the best Alex

Hi Alex, my first reaction is that no, it doesn't but I haven't got own experience. Well, materials like bone and wood don't get hurt in those temperatus anyway. Not sure about any glues though in oven. I would like to hear your experience later, is that possible? Thanks.

thetopicala thanks! yeah i'll try that. I think I will make a video about the knife so you can see how it went. thanks for the help all the best!
I collected birch bark in Maine this past Fall, but the part of the bark I collected was the outer layer, very thin. Part of it looks like the scraps you cleaned off. I have quite a lot of it, probably enough to stack a 100mm handle, but I wonder if it is any use at all in making a handle. Most of it is 1mm or less in thickness. The bark had fallen off the trees naturally, so the pulpy portion is not there for the most part. Your advice would be appreciated. (That advice might be to collect thicker bark next year, but that would be all right. I would rather not start a project doomed to fail. Or, is there a way to use the thin bark?)

I'm not too sure as I've never done this, but I'd say use more bark and push it together and that might work?
@thetopicala

+Jeff Polaski Jeff, you are right. It's no worth trying to make birch bark handle out of too thin material. The look would be very poor. When you find thickness more than 1.5mm ot thicker then you are on right track! Thanks and Merry C. atb, Osmo ps. sorry I hadn't noticed your message until now...

Thank you for the advice. It's all a bit chancy when I don't have the other basics down, so I'm going to bump a birch back handle down the list a bit more. Have a great New Year.
As long as your birch bark pieces are relatively tight for almost every piece you don’t have to worry about it sliding by the time your finished the handle won’t even be able to be moved without like hammering on it and even with that it would break before it would slide the pieces become very tight just put your bolster on like normal and flatten out the rat tale

do you treat the handle with anything to protect it?
@thetopicala

Birch bark does not really need anything to protect specially. Of course you may oil it. They do even varnish it sometimes but I find it really wrong. Good polish it is enough.
@EattinThurs61
9 жыл бұрын
I would use linseed oil and not cover it with lacquer. With uncovered birch bark you get good grip even if bloody or fishy handle. Linseed oil hardens in air with time, but one ought to soak for months. Take glass jar, make hole for blade in cover put with handle down in oil, try to make lid airtight, wait a season or two...Remember that linseed oil is if mixed with combustible prone to self ignite! So do not spill like on sawdust or use a rag and then let it be! Burn it or soak it in water. Silver is good material for to use at blade end of handle, it is nice and antibacterial. (old coins)

@thetopicala

I want to say loud, you cannot take anything out of a living tree anywhere unless you own the tree or the forest. Everyman’s right covers the gathering of twigs, leaves, needles, birch bark, or bark that has fallen to the ground. This is directly from a booklet that guides a traveller in Finland. Hope this clears people's knowledge about their rights in the nature. Thanks, Osmo
You measure every single piece of the bark, peel every single piece, punch in every single piece a hole etc. Why is all that necessary? Here take a look..... Kauhava puukko "Финка"
