H and I beams are for bending loads. like supporting the load of a roof when used as a beam across the roof. Columns are for longitudnal loading, like in this case. Even if we assume that these I beam you installed will resist the bending caused by wind impact on the back of the panels, the flat outer parts of the beam should have been parallel to the perpendicular of the inclination. Have you ever seen these I beams being used as a pillar in building contruction. Round columns are for this purpose which can resist buckling. Anyway, These I beams are overkill anyway considering the weight of the panels. They can sup much heavier concrete roof, but in bending.

H and I beams are being used in steel structure buildings as pillars but in case of solar panels indeed it is overkill.

I am about to get a solar installation. I am favoring H- Beams for vertical support because I think the number of columns used would be less with H-Beams as compared to using round poles. So there would be less chance of roof leakage. Am I correct?

@@SayVeritatis Is your roof flat enough for L2 L3 structures. Otherwise you can go for larger diameter and material thickness for equivalent strength by round poles, or even C chanels.

@@belalmir5 Thank you for your expert advice. Obviously you are a civil engineer. My structure has to be raised. It will be about 17 feet high on its higher side. Just wondering if there is any particular disadvantage of using H-beams as columns. Is it about cost management?

@@belalmir5 One more question. There is a company that uses 4 inch dia MS poles for columns. It then uses nuts and bolts to fix horizontal (inclined) beams over those columns. Is that good or should horizontal beans be welded over columns? Do nuts and bolts hold just as well?

Local companies are here for money they would not let the benefit transfer to end user so smoothly unless there is some healthy competition.
