Old head here. There's a long tradition of crate digging and picking just based on the album cover. Many great samples have come from that. You're only limited by your willingness (or lack of) to get creative. Y'all got so so SO many new tools and guides nowadays that we only dreamed of back then. Use them! You got this! Make something we ain't never heard!

yes sir! thanks you inspired me to keep at whether the beat works or not, what really counts is the adventure and the leap of faith.
Also….this is why all 90s producers had a signature sound. They had different samples and build own kits. Now everyone is using the same sounds

As a modern producer I like downloading hella drum kits and using whatever I feel like. That helps me make interesting drum/melodies combination

Can we even use samples like how they did in the 90s?

I try to balance it. I make alot of my own sht but I definitely dabble in a couple kits here and there too

I love this, so often I get so caught up in trying to find the perfect sample, sometimes it's better to just pick one and figure out how to make the most of it. That is where the true creativity lies.

I would've thought true creativity lies in creating your own original music
There is a Rick Rubin quote that I like, that fits here nicely. "The true magic of the creative process is that there's no magic, you simply set aside time and start working. It's like fishing you know, you can you can go out fishing, but you can't say i'm gonna catch three fish today you know? We have very little control over this process, you just have to start fishing"

True story man! Sometimes I find even 5 dope samples in a row, but I won’t get anything done with them. It’s not about the sample. It’s about the right mood and the creativity.
@InsideOutBeats
Жыл бұрын
Definitely! You mentioning mood is so important as the same sample could turn out way different multiple times depending on your state / mood and creativity

Go for the song not for the sample multiply samples are the key to finishble works
It depends on the headspace you're in creatively too. You can hear a sample one day and not be inspired to do anything with it. Then time will pass and you'll hear that sample in a different way because you were in another creative headspace. It happens to me all the time. That's why I never discard records even if they sound like duds at first.

Ikr. , mood plays a vital element
Wasn’t really feeling the beat, but definitely got the message of what you was talking about.
Making a single random record work. You should make a series out of this because this is actually more valuable than Rhythm Roulette. It really forces you into creativity.

Picasso would stare at his subjects for hours before painting them. Appreciate every sample
Agree a good producer can make a beat out of anything, no matter what, as long as there's some sounds. Another fun exercise is to take a record that has been sampled before in one of your favorite songs and try to flip it different than the original. Even better if you can find a totally different section to flip that has never been used before.
Love the creativity and message Kirk. Creating within defined limits is major game. There's beauty in being able to be frugal in regards to obtaining material things and still finding new inspiration from the same source, again and again. Use your creativity to solve the problem if music isn't something you would normally sample.
How refreshing someone with a positive outlook, and just using the tools on hand. Well done sir.
One of the most informative hip hop production videos of 2023, and it’s freestyle which makes it part of hip hop. Hopefully the young cats will value the technical and musical value of this. Thanks brother.

Respect for the Mantronix 'Who is it?' in the background
I definitely suggest slowing down weird samples, sometimes speeding them up, and lots of choping
Damn that’s some musical wizardry
I love making beats out of wacky samples. That 2nd beat makes my heart smile. =]
Man you’re right, that’s how the greatest producers would do it, make something out of scraps using whatever vinyls their parents had laying around this just inspired me, keep going bro‼️💯

You made that work, I watched every episode of Mass appeal and they wouldn’t capitalize off all the Chops or they would pass up a sample I would use. great work. This is gonna be motivation for the next cook up

Watching Mass Appeal sometimes is like watching your favorite team miss several opportunities to win 💯😂
That's some handsome boy modelling school vibes❤❤❤
This is a great video for the non-believers
Dope bro! Teaching the old school ways. People don’t chop no more, they just put drums over sample loops. Be creative!
If this is your ethos, then a couple of suggestiions: you can crate dig at a thrift store. Someone's grandfather kicked it and all the records that wouldn't sell just get tossed there. You can pick up the weirdest stuff you won't find anywhere else. The next thing is to call all the record shops and ask them if they ever blow out the inventory that's sat for years. Sometime's they'll do a dollar sale on all the unknown janky stuff that won't move. If they aren't interested, tell them you'll do a Benjamin for 50 records that they want to get off the shelf or out of storage. Here's the thing, the more interesting the album cover is, the more interesting samples you'll find from people no one has ever heard of.
"Best idea I've ever had !" 😉
Ha, ha. Love this. Now try flipping Rock n Roll McDonald's by Wesley Willis 🙂
I share your philosophy brotha'. I rarely go for the obvious. I like to find those ill gems that no one's touched yet. The chop is EVERYTHING!!!
That last pattern on flip 2 tho…sheesh….whole face melted… Best idea he ever had
"This idea I never had." 🔥
That lil “uh” was fire tho 😂
Great stuff man! I blindly(deafly) download random samples and sounds and then just drop em in and use em.

I haven't even gotten through the whole video yet, but I gotta say I like the way you talk about creating something out of nothing. Like just going to the record store and picking up an album just because the cover art looks nice. That's the way I discovered some of my favorite albums back in the day.
