Selling beats to known artists and getting your name known is like hunting for a job. If you just put up a job profile on the internet and waited for jobs to come to you, you'll never get a job - likewise, if you just put your beats on the internet and hope the top artists will discover you, you're dreaming. Whereas, if you get in these people's faces a bit and promote yourself, they're less likely to ignore you. Also, if you send emails to artists like "Yo I've got beats for sale, check 'em out and maybe buy one if you like 'em!" they'll be like "yeah, right, dunno who TF you are, why would I buy your shit?" whereas if you offer it for free... Drill isn't a huge money-spinner lets be honest, and a lot of artists aren't signed and are independent, so will probably take the time to have a little look at your stuff if the prospect of getting a free beat to use is on the table. Once your name is established, then you can start selling your beats for a nice price, as artists will want your beats to their name.
