    The chanter reeds of many forms of bagpipe are similar in concept to oboe reeds, and I've been trying to learn reed making for my instruments of choice for a while now. This video is very helpful, thank you.

    Just passing by accumulating double reed info in English for tinkering with a suona that cost 1/50 of what oboes do. Suona reeds are much shorter and wider at the top to look triangular. Each reed suana end is bound by short copper wire spiral and pushes onto the mouth piece and easily taken off and pushed back on. I need to find information on the rubber like cone shape gasket that fits the suona mouthpiece to the suona. I can invent my own, but I'd rather find an easy way to make the joint.

    How about some suggestion on buying a high quality reed making kit or separate tools. I am not interested in the square style scraping knife. I like the single blade style.How about cane and string material itself is the differences in quality and sound? Which are the better quality and who sells? Thank You

    My cane cracks every time I start to scrape. How do I prevent this from happening?

  • @OboeFiles

    @OboeFiles

    4 жыл бұрын

    Could have different causes so it’s hard to know for sure, but the most common would be that perhaps 1.the cane was not very dense, 2. The scrape has too much downward pressure. (To solve this sharpen you knife; I’m working on a video to show how to do this) 3.the plaque is too contorted for your cane diameter (disregard this if using a flat plaque)

    I have just started to scrape pencils and I've spent about 4 hours doing it. Because my teacher can't make me reeds right now, I have a place online where I buy good quality reeds but they still need to be adjusted. How long approximately should I be working on scraping pencils and old reeds before I can adjust the reeds I'll buy online?

  • @OboeFiles

    @OboeFiles

    3 жыл бұрын

    Reeds you buy should work well more or less right away. Maybe try different sources until you find something that works for you. As far as scrape time, I think you should just jump in and scrape some old reeds first the key is just getting used to a sharp knife. A dull knife is deadly.... good luck! I have some stuff on www.oboefiles.com/articles/ that might help, good luck!!!

    Okay so I’ve been playing oboe for like three years and have been starting to make reeds. I have bought all the items needed included gouged and shaped cane. I have been trying to tie them and they come out find when I first tie them but then when I begin scraping the cane slips off the staple and the wrapping/tying comes undone. Is there any advice you could give me because it’s been really frustrating and I can’t figure out what is happening!

  • @OboeFiles

    @OboeFiles

    So It sounds like you might not be pulling tight enough while tying. Its really important to pull tight both on the spool and mandrel toward yourself while tying. Check out my video on tying for a better demo. Hope that helps! Good luck :)

    Using beeswax is smart. It keeps the cane from slipping around, and it's an additional sealing technique. It's necessary for freehand tying taught to me by John Ellis.

    @@OboeFiles A scraper is a rectangular piece of hard metal of various sizes and shapes on which edge you pass a special rod called burnisher, a VERY hard metal. Thus, you create a microscopic blade called burr perpendicular on the edge. When you pass it over a surface, it cuts directly in that direction. It's used for very fine finishes on furniture, bow making, and so on. Scraping with a knife does not apply the blade in the direction of the cut. kzread.info/dash/bejne/aZafu9WgfqnWdco.html
