Patty Wilkin the original was made with a rainbow cake so I'm guessing you can. it's just the inside of the cake so if you have fondant to cover the cake chocolate cake or any other kind should be fine.

That's kind of a waste of frosting :/ that idea sounds fun but once she is done with the cake no one would be able to eat it since it has so much it would be extremely unhealthy and expensive considering how much frosting you need to make a one layer of frosting on a cake.
