@@jacothejeweller I see settings that appear to be tension set but in fact there is an underbezel either soldered in or carved into the metal under the stone. This underbezel is not visible from the top and serves to securely hold the stone because the parts can't move. An actual tension setting requires very heavy metal to (hopefully) keep the stone from falling out. The "faux tension set" allows a wider range of designs. I hope I'm describing it well. Here is an example of a ring by Paco Corodia where we can't see the underbezel but we know it's there because the stone would fall out in half a minute without it. kzread.info/dash/bejne/i3h_wc96cb3Qpso.html If you were to make a tutorial of some version of a "faux tension set" ring (I don't know if there is an actual name for the setting so I just made this up) I would love to see your approach. Hope this isn't too much of an ask!

I am loving what you are making. I am a Jewellery Maker and Designer with over 30 years experience behind me, but still open minded enough to allow me to learn new things. At or around 5.06 minutes on this video, you use a wooden thing to hold the shank while you file it. I have never seen anything like that before and I would like one. Did you make it? Or can you tell me where I can get one from. By the way, I am in the UK. Cheers. Phil (from philongold)

Hey Phil, and thank you for the feedback. I don’t think we could ever stop learning and I’m always happy to hear that some part of the videos help in any way. Yep, that clamp is available here in the UK from cousins. It’s under a 5’r and usually used for polish work I believe. Here’s the link 👉🏻 www.cousinsuk.com/product/ring-clamp-levers-wood

@@jacothejeweller WOW that was a quick reply - I like it, thanks. I have ordered 2 of the clamps. I already deal with Cousins, so it was easy. You say "Here in the UK" - I though you were based in S-Africa, and wasn't it Afrikaans you were speaking in one of your videos? I was put onto you by Chris from the Diamond Mounter. I think it is so great that us professional jewellery makers can all communicate with each other and help those that are trying to improve their skill levels. I run Jewellery Making Courses in my Gloucester based workshop/studio. It is so important to give help to those who are trying this exacting craft for the first time or helping those with some knowledge, to improve. All the very best and will be watching for new clips. @@jacothejeweller I love the Fretz hammers - I have 3 of them. So well balanced and totally well made! I also have a Soldering station - but not GRS, although it is just as good with top quality clamps. I do have a GRS Bench-mate Encore QC - only had it 4 weeks so still getting used to what it can do with it. Only thing I would say is that GRS stuff is mighty pricey. Dividers - I have some top quality stainless steel dividers - can't remember where I got them from, but I do remember they were over £85.00, but are like a dream to work with - they are very strong but still light and stable. I like sharing ideas about all sorts of techniques, tools etc. keep cool. Phil

Beautifully elegant! May I ask how you formed the twist in the band, please? So, you did you just secure the wire/sheet in pliers or vice and then twist it before tapping it up into a ring, or did you you form the ring and then forge/carve the twist? Either way, the final result is beautiful! Many thanks

I filed the shape from the solid band. No twisting required for this one 😉

@@jacothejeweller Ah ha! Thank you! I had a feeling that the surface behind the twist on the inside of the ring was flat. So I guess you start with a thicker gauge metal, file the twist and then file the rest of the rest of the ring shank to the same thickness as the twist...or....taper the ring at both ends to the final desired thickness and file the twist from the thicker middle section...time to experiment me thinks!
