Amazing tutorial, thank you so much! You actually explain what you do and it is clear... not like 90% of the tutorial on KZread.

This is the best toon shader tutorial I've seen. There was another one that didn't address the different color lights not affecting the models anymore. I like how you thought about and investigated the potential pit falls!

What a fantastic tutorial. I appreciate that you actually explain why things work instead of just how to do it (Especially at 10:30, you went out of your way to create a graphic to help teach why it all works). I love your use of KZread's "chapters" feature and the progress bar at the bottom. Everything is super digestible and helpful! :)

something i love about these tutorials is that they teach you all about nodes you dont realize, and coupled with the great explanations u give the things i learn goes even further. i actually opted not to use the toon shader for my project in the end (too many normal-intense surfaces) but the mask rgb and smoothstep nodes were answers to problems ive long struggled to define.

Hello, Evans. Congratulations on the tutorials. I´ve been following them in 5.4 and some parameters have changed. It is no longer possible to follow step by step every part of the tutorial, so I had to improvise, but I don´t really understand the changes i had to do. I am repeating it in 5.0.3 and migrating the shaders to my 5.4 project. I hope it looks as great as yours with this process!! It would be awesome if you updated this guide! Thank you again.

@@evansbohl I tried both the toon shader and the outline shaders yesterday and i must say they work great. I managed to get close to the anime style look that i was aiming for. Sure actual anime style has additional requirements to get that exact look (like eyes showing under hair, or Fresnel like rim lighting to get that extra shine on the model), but shaders that manage to get that exact same feel, usually dont have the features your shader provides (like being affected by environmental shadows or additional scene lights) and i must say i prefer these features to the exact anime look. Being affected by environmental lighting is much more important to the atmosphere i am aiming for, thus your shader is perfect for my work. In addition if i manage to get beyond novice level with my skills in shader development at some point, i am pretty sure i will be able to implement those extra features as well (but for now it is a distant dream :D). Thank you for the tutorial and the shader.

Very nice tutorial! Love how you just not explain stuff, but show it in between steps. Refreshing to see tutorials by people who actually understand what they are doing and why. I guess this shader can be extended to have steps in 'gradation'? Like if I want 2 (or 3) tints representing the shadow shadesof the color and 2 tints representing the light shades of colors.

I use my toonshader on objects only , benefit of more control and variations but this would be amazing for entering an area and your game turned cartoony. Wd!

3:38 "Before tonemapping" option seems to be gone one UE5.4 I used 'Scene Color Before Bloom' instead. 16:25 in UE 5.4 I'm not getting any of those weird artefacts with lumen on, might be fixed. Thank you, Evans!

Hey Evans! Great tutorial! Do you know if its possible to set other lightsourses do not affect shadows of the main one? So i would have my main light casting consistant shadows, but when character passes by the light source only the parts that recieve lights will take the light color. But main shadow stays not affected. Thank you!!

Great tutorial! I have a little problem though, I have made the cel-shader about a month ago and I just noticed that whenever I go into the shadows there is hardly any difference in lighting, also, when i move direct light down to the horizon, the scene is not getting dark at all, any ideas what could be the problem?

Thanks, everything works but when packaging it for Android I get "cooking a material ressource (in PP_ToonShader hierarchy) that doesn't have a valid shadermap! shadermap pointer is null" et le postprocess ne marche pas quand j'essaie sur mobile, j'ai essayé de changer le mode de rendu en "deffered", de recompiler les shader mais ça ne marche pas
