Nick The most common mistake that people make is by restricting the airflow. In order to get the correct draft through the center core you need to supply more air. You need to drill at least 1 more hole in the side of the log, preferably 2 more. Now, by starting the fire at the very bottom of the central core you will notice immediately how quickly the log gets started. It's all about the airflow, the location and the angle of the air vents. All three factors will give you different results depending on your requirements. You can have a hot fire or you can have a slow burning fire.
