How to make a spear from an $8 dollar knife

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

Here's how to make a spear from an $8 dollar knife. I got the knife from Harbor Freight and had some fun testing it out and reviewing it for another video. Definitely not my style of knife so I decided to make something different out of it. After a short deliberation I decided on making a spear.
About the same time my son was working in the garden and discovered our garden hoe and a cracked handle. Perfect! Now I had a halfway decent hardwood handle for my spear. The time was right.
I used several tools for this including a scroll saw, a metal file, belt sander, drill, angle grinder, propane torch and a few other things. In the end it took me a couple of hours and I had a pretty decent spear, but if I had it to do over again I'd probably try to give it more strength at the joint where the shaft and the blade come together. I used bolts instead of pins and epoxy so I could take it apart and repair if necessary. Realistically though, this spear is just for show, it's not even really sharp and has only a false edge on the back side. So durability is not the most important consideration.

In the days of the British empire, during the Zulu wars, Shaka Zulu led his armies to many victories. He was credited with creating a shorter spear (like yours) with a long blade and a shorter shaft so it could be used as both a sword or knife or thrown like a spear. Was considered to be a tool that changed history.

Personally I think you should have buried it far deeper into the wood with 3 bolds, as the mechanical advantage of it sticking out that far will break it too easily

Hi Mate, love your videos. Just hint for drilling stainless steel. Make sure you use an appropriate lubricant/coolant and slow the speed of your drill down. Make sure the drill is sharp and maintain a constant pressure on the drill, not too much. The trouble with stainless, like you say, is that it's very hard and that blade probably is a 440C grade. Keep your videos coming. Cheers, mate.

I think it's gonna break on a stress test. The tail of the blade is too short, it should be inserted deeper into the pole.

Maybe make a spear that is useable. Bamboo and a piece of steel rod. In my case, a length of rebar. Learned how on a small pacific island as a kid living there. As to the hf knife, just screw in a stick into the handle for a spear.

Great video. One suggestion to dull the shine. I have seen people use bluing. Like they use on gun barrels, that would give you a dull finish without taking the temper out of the steel. Gun bluingvwill not wear off as easy as paint.

Nice video. It's actually better that you tempered it because if you do test it out, it's less likely to shatter. I think spears should be tempered the same as throwing knives, which is pretty soft compared to a regular knife temper. The idea is that the blade should bend instead of break. I like how it came out great work.

If you drilled holes in the blade. You could have bolted on an iron pipe with one end flattened onto the blade. Then stuck the wood into the pipe.

If you want to make a "work of art" good looking spear at home then your method is good.If you want to make a functional self d fence weapon on a knife- spear concept to defend against a large animal etc than the best thing is:;Large and long Bowie knife maybe 12 inch blade.Affix it with 2 or 3 car hose clamps to a good old man)disabled walking cane that's adjustable and has a strong rubber handle.Imagine the force of you are at least an able bodied man can have to plunge it into something and keep stabbing repeatedly.Better than a rifle affixed bayonet .Or a wooden spear. Instead of cane one could use a heavier metal rod maybe 6 foot long.Plusva knife blade...7 feet.Kill any wolf or a medium sized bear.

Now take it apart before your son thinks of it as his toy. Kids are curious and relentless and your kid will probably find a way to use when you're not around. Don't you remember when you were a kid, there was no place your dad could hide something where you could not find it and play with it, and of course, you would put it back before your dad came home. I could still remember my mom scolding my dad saying to my dad "You made what?" ha-ha-ha-ha.
