How to Make a Southbend 13 Chuck Backplate - Part 1 The Prep Work

Ойын-сауық

Two years ago when I started machining I found it very difficult to find videos that provided me enough guidance to make a backplate for my Southbend 13 lathe. I knew nothing of the tools needed, how to use them, or to understand the how's and why's.
A friend asked me to make him a backplate and I decided to share my experience for others just getting a lathe a needing to make a backplate. I hope this helps someone.
You can also watch Brian at Halligan142 who has an excellent video on that same lathe. • Making a Chuck Backplate

Very detailed and good instructions. I have cut many threads and still manage to screw up at times. Knowing how and doing can be two different things. Good Job.

You’re absolutely correct. Its not as simple as it looks. Thanks for your comments. Much appreciated. Gilles

Great timing Gilles! I'm getting ready to make a back plate for an 8" 6 jaw I just bought. I kind of cheated though and bought a blank back plate from Grizzly. My Clausing lathe is also 1-3/4" x 8.

Mick just so you are aware, the threads for the backplate I made was 1 7/8 x 8. Please don’t use my measurements. Looking forward to your results. Gilles
