How to Make a Small Wooden Mallet for Furniture Making

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

#howtomake #handtools #woodworking
Watch me make small but nicely weighted wooden mallets perfect for cabinet/furniture making. These are to join two other larger mallets I made a while back. Each mallet is filled internally with metal shot and resin to increase mass not size The handles are Turned on my Record Power Coronet Herald Wood Lathe. I love woodturning and these handles are a classic example why i would never want to be without my lathe.
The American Purple Heart Mallet handle is turned from a piece of Apple wood which had some very beautiful and interesting grain colours and patterns.
The Chacate Preto mallet handle is turned Zebrano
Both mallets have a Maple centre and both heads are secured to their handle with the use of a through wedged mortice and tenon.
On one end of each mallet I cut a recess and lined it with leather / hide to protect wood when assembling joints like dovetails
The mallets compliment my #veritas tools as they are not too brutal.
Please feel free to comment or to ask me questions as I'm happy to reply.
Hope you enjoy.

    Watched this video so many times now. Brilliant in every way - and those mallets are just beautiful! Please can I ask where you get the leather from that you used for the head of the mallets - and also where you got the leather from for the lanyards?

    Thanks for the continued support. This was my first video. The leather was from Workshop Heaven and the cord I can't remember but I think it can be found on amazon.

    @@WoodScrape I can see you blowing up soon bro. Some of the best content I've seen on here. So many KZreadrs have started doing less building and tips and more tool reviews and that's just not what I'm here for. Keep doing what you're doing bro

    Goldilocks and the 3 mallets, they're gorgeous man, and i must ask, how is the color of the purpleheart holding up? And when you made these did you have to bring back any of the color in the purpleheart?

  • @WoodScrape

    @WoodScrape

    Thank you - The Purple Heart is doing well. Through my experience with it, after working it, it turns pink. I generally leave it at this point for a few weeks to regain the colour ( air and UV i think ). I have also heard that heat helps it get the colour back but haven't tried as yet so don't take my word for it. Thanks for watching
