    The rocks and gravel filter out large sediments. The soil and sand filters out fine impurities, organisms and particles and the cotton layer acts as the final barrier.

    I don't think the soil is a good option for the filter. I agree with the cotton balls, sand and gravel. Activated charcoal would be a better substitute for the soil. Most other filters that I've watched make their dirty water with the soil, not use it in the filter.

  • @Skylight_Designs

    @Skylight_Designs

    Soil contains important biota that helps transform and decompose certain chemicals and other contaminants. You can leave it out if you want.

    Soil is not a proper filter. You ve taken raw soil and applied at bottom where the filtered water reached for final stage. It'll get contaminated again. If you'd use it at starting face ( top or second ) it would make sense. Use charcoals is the correct way.

    The concept is similar to traditional methods of filtration, however the water should be boiled before drinking.

    You can replace it with activated charcoal. The sand helps in the filtering process, but it will still work if your water is not very dirty.
