How to make a simple square box cushion cover with piping and hidden zip.
Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль
In this video we use techniques from previous videos to make a simple square shape box cushion with piping/ welt all around the top and bottom and a hidden zip with pocket at the end.
The foam cushion inner is 10cm or 4 inches so we cut the border at the same thickness to ensure a nice tight fit. The zip is cut at about 2.5cm or 1 inch thicker than the border before zip is added so it finishes at the same size.
We made the piping and the border both longer than needed so they can be trimmed to the right size while the cover is constructed.
The top and bottom panels have had the stitching allowance added so they end up the right size after piping and border are sewn on. We use 1/2 inch or 12mm stitching allowance.
We hope that this all makes sense and can help people with some basic upholstery skills. Feel free to ask questions and we will answer as best as we can.

I do have a question. Another upholstery attaches the cording to the boxing strip first. Both sides. As opposed to attaching it to the top and bottom seat pieces. By so doing you’re sewing it in a straight line….whats your thought on this. Thanks in advance.
@premierupholstery-upholste90

@@blumenaue7590 yes some people do it this way but it does mean you have to be sure your border is exactly the right size and also we find it slightly harder to sew the corners do to the bulk of 3 layers of fabric plus the piping cord.
Best video I have seen!! Love how you just show how to do it and not talk about things we don't care to hear about.

Hello again! It took me all day but I’m finally done making a 74“ x 15“ bench cushion for my patio. you make it look so easy. I was using Sunbrella fabric which is pretty heavy and those corners are pretty tricky but it’s done and it’s pretty and the continuous zipper although tricky to get it started looks really nice. Thank you again for your lovely tutorial. I have two more cushions to go.

Thanks for watching and we’re glad that the video helped. The basics for a shaped cushion are the same, plenty of reference marks and make sure they’re meeting up as you see the second panel on. Don’t be afraid to stop and take it apart if it doesn’t look like its working rather than soldier on and have more work to fix it. We will be making videos showing irregular shaped cushion in the future when time allows.
I did it! Thanks to you, I was able to make a box cushion with piping and a zipper. Looks great!!! (I used a different video on how to make the zipper panel where you fold the panel in half and sew down the half the width of the zipper, then sew in the zipper and seam rip out the initial zip. I was too nervous to open the zipper and sew that way.) But my cushion looks professionally done!!! Really no mistakes thanks to you!!! I wish I could attach a photo! Much appreciated!

@premierupholstery-upholste90
2 жыл бұрын
Hi and thanks for watching. There is no fixed rule but we will typically make the zips go about a quarter of the length of the sides of the border so if the side is 20” we would make it long enough to reach about 5” around each side. In some circumstances it will need to be exactly the width of the cushion for example if you can see the sides when it’s sat in a chair and don’t want any zip showing.
Hello, congratulations! It`s a very good tutorial video.

Great video, thanks! May I ask what kind of foam you are using, or would recommend for a cushion?
@premierupholstery-upholste90
Жыл бұрын
Thank you very much and thanks for watching. The thickness of the cushion will usually determine the density of the foam. For something like this about 4” think we would usually use 39 hard reflex foam which is blue colour, when we make thicker cushons between 6-7” thick we like to use 42 or 400 which is grey and quite firm to begin with but softens up nicely and lasts for a long time. When we make thinner cushions about 2” thick we like to use 50 hard which is white. We are UK based so depending on where you are they might have different ratings or be different colours.
This is such a brilliant video!! Keeping coming back to watch it. I’m sewing my first bench cushion on my juki industrial walking foot, using velvet! Very very nervous😂 Just so I understand correctly, if I’m using 4” thick foam with a Dacron wrap, the side panels only need to be about 3” tall to assure a nice tight fit?
@premierupholstery-upholste90
Жыл бұрын
Hi and thanks for watching we’re really happy that people are finding our videos useful! Juki 1181? Or 1541? Yes we would recommend making the border finish at 3” if your foam is 4” thick and Dacron isn’t too heavy. We use an allowance of 1/2” for sewing so we would cut the borders at 4” and then the zip panel at 5” which when you split in half and add the zip it will end up at 4” to match your border and then 3” when all sewn together. Watch out for the velvet walking when you sew, make lots of reference points and don’t be afraid to stop and take it apart if looks like it’s going out of line. Fell free to email us at contact@premierupholstery.co.uk if you have any other questions, and send us a picture of the finished piece😃

@premierupholstery-upholste90

@@KaterinaBuscemi that’s a good machine with compound feed so will help hold the velvet in place a bit better, if it moves a lot you can always use binder/ bulldog clips to hold it in place and remove as you sew up to them, once you’ve done the first and see how it reacts you’ll be able to compensate, sure you’ll be fine! 👍🏼
