How to make a Shaman Drum / Frame Drum

Музыка

This is a directional video on how to make a Shaman Drum.
Every drum is unique, and the steps here are based on how I made my first drum. You can make your own drum with completely different materials in comparison to what I have used, but this is to keep you on the track of your process.
I made my first drum by using only natural materials from Finland, and the drum I made is very large and has a nice, rich and powerful tone to it.
Enjoy the video and I hope it helps you!

Kemin Nahkatarvike sells skin which has been handled already (the hair and other stuff from the skin has been taken off). I can recommend them from Finland, but I do not know any company from Norway either. Thank you for the comment 👍🏻✨

  • @hamy_music_finland

    @hamy_music_finland

    3 жыл бұрын

    The alumen was intended to boost the alkaline of the mix so that the color would stick better. As you can see, it did not quite work, so I cannot actually recommend this process with full heart. Good point. This was my first frame drum I had made, so it had errors with the process and was kind of experimental. I have gotten better results with a water-plant made mixture made from for example willow trees which had been boiled for several hours. The mixture I have made has never been hot, it is always lukewarm. On my instagram @hamy_musiikki you can see the results of our drum colors from June. They were made with the willow colouring mix, and one even became purple of color because the person used blueberries on her mixture. I hope this helps you out at all 👍🏻 thank you for your question.

    @@hamy_music_finland Thank you for your response. We use alum to tan skins and make leather. The alum changes the structure of the skin making it less flexible. I have often used tea and also coffee to create patterns on my drums. It is very quick and I can re-use tea bags and leftover coffee grounds. Happy New year from Cape Town.

    Terveisiä Virosta! =) Veeery interesting to see how it's made with the reindeer? antler! I have been contemplating making one with the "drum deity" as a handle.. A question though: where can one get a reindeer rawhide? Maybe you can point me to a general direction- they don't live around here but I would looove to make a real Sami-drum with the worlds on the face.. I've been using roe deer and red deer skins so far but they are quite thick compared.. and thus also very moody with weather changes.. Long story short: Noice! Love the sound! Oh, btw: I have heard that the cheap (raw) red wine can also color the hide with nice reddish tint - not yet tried that- because deer skins are naturally pretty dark, hard to shade them..

    Hey! I have made a couple of shamandrums, and I have bought all my reindeer skins from the local company Kemin Nahkatarvike Oy. You can find the skin options, sizes and price from their website. Also people can get reindeer skins "fresh" around November-December, when the reindeer seperation takes place. I do not suggest shipping these unprepared skins, but if you happen to get to get one, you can make a unique drum with the skin. The Kemin Nahkatarvike Oy:s skins are all prepared and in great condition. That is why I use them. Hope this helps, and thanks for the view! Subscribe if you feel like it :) Thank you.

Tämän lisäksi nyt kesällä järjestetään useita rummun teko kursseja joita kannattaa myös harkita. Ainakin toukokuussa on tulossa Rovaniemellä 14.-15.5. Lapin metsämuseolla kurssi, ja niitä on ympäri Suomea. Etköhän näillä pääse alkuun. Pidä silmät auki ja tutki mikä on sun kohdallas paras reitti. Kulje sitten sitä kohti :)

    @@szeklergeneral4266 Now I have a bit more time to answer since I am not at work. Sorry for the previous answer which was so short. The people of Sami for my understanding had multiple tribes which all had their own way to give birth to a drum. One of these ways was as you mentioned was the sewing of the leather, but what I have been taught here in Finland was also the tying behind the back of the drum. This was depending on the tribe. The problem is that almost every single one of the drums made by the Fenno-Scandic Sami people are destroyed due to Christianity. The pagan cultures of the north and their traditions were almost fully erased when Christianity by force became the ruling force here. Also the harsh winters helped in the fact that many drums were destroyed only by snow and ice. Anyways as it comes for this specific drum in the video, this is the first drum I made for myself two years ago. I completely followed the instructions of my teacher, ofcourse with some exceptions with color etc. I try to make the drum so that it is not specifically any "style" or doesn't have any traditional meaning for anyone. I do not use symbols or anything, and everything I make is fully organic, so that I respect the drum and its history. I have made several drums after this one, with different styles. This is the only drum I have tied behind the back. I do thank you for your comment, because it made me think. I will take history and culture into consideration when making these, and I do hope that all the people who make drums respect the history and traditions behind them. This video is also made to inspire people about different cultures and to gain knowledge. If we do not talk about these things, they will be forgotten. Thanks :) Edit: I had a spelling mistake: trives -> tribes

What in this drum of mine makes you feel like it is part of your culture may I ask? Frame drums have been found all over the world. This specific drum especially is as neutral as it can be.
