How to: Make A Riding Lawn Mower FAST!
Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары
Here's a video covering the pulley swaps, and custom tensioner pulleys I've built and installed on our off road and mudding tractors. Pulley swaps make you lawn mower faster. You want to increase the size of the front, and/or make the back pulley smaller to increase the speed of your lawn mower or tractor.
Green MTD has a 4" front, stock rear
Craftsman crawler has stock size pulleys
Murray has 4" in the front, and 5" in the rear

I appreciated the presentation! I am a fulltime welder, machinist and mechanic and its always good to hear and see what others have done and are doing! Thanks for sharing!
Looks like fun. Nothing wrong with having fun, plus it's cheap. My neighbor and I used to run a couple of old tractors too. We had belt slippage when the belt got muddy and wet. I see you figured out how to fix that problem.
I have an old Murry that I plan on makeing an off road play toy. TY for the many ideas that you have given me not old on pully swaps but lots of other ideas. I also enjoy doing things my way out of what I can find.
My brothers and I learned a valuable lesson the hard way on our first pulley swap. If you make something go fast, you should put some thought into the brakes.
This was the first video I ever saw of lawn tractor off roading and I was hooked... I watched every single one of your videos one right after another... U are a huge inspiration and I hope to get a lawn mower and take it romping... Thanks fearless and keep up the good work p.s. can't wait for the next video
Moving up to the Kentucky hills soon and can't wait to start making these for my kids!!!!!!...Great job man!!!!
The way you have that adjustable tensioner pulley to twist the handle and make it tighter or looser is amazing.. I really need to do that to mine..
Could you do a quick video on swapping the engine drive pulley for the old mower deck pulley?
That's awesome. Like your channel man. Authentic.
Adam from Vlogginlife sent me here a cuple days ago and im so glad he did. I've watched a hell of alot of your vids now about mowers and gokart mowers... bloody awesome mate! i love fabrication and engineering!!! Keep it up bro!!! Cant wait for more new vids! :D
I dont know for sure, but a good start would be 6-7" on the motor, and a 3" on the trans
Wow, I'm glad I stumbled across your vid. I'm in the process of making a go-kart out of an old poulan lawn mower. I was sure that I needed to make the back pulley bigger, not smaller. After seeing this I realized that would not have worked. I can't imagine how mad I would have been when the damn thing creeped along at 1mph. I probably would have bite a hole in one of the tires. Haha, thanks.
Hey fearlessfront can u pulley swap a rear mounted engine
I love your channel, man. Awesome work
I was looking for a video on what lawn tractor pulley setup looked like. And yours was good. My thinking is on how to increase the torque, reduction. So im looking for the opposite of what you've done. But I did learn something. Have fun!
your my hero man, back yard, salvaged parts, low low cost. and making something right fun out of it. word thats fucking awesome.
yes it did, we disassembled it, cleaned it really good and welded the spider gears together on that one
Another great vid, keep'em coming. Thanks from Texas !!!
Awesome fleet ya got there!
Ahhhhhh yeah! I've been working on a project just like this for my kiddos.
i just got a newish craftsman and the clutch pully is right next to the front pully any tips
@LaPavoniMac Not sure on the exact ratio, but I usually do my pulley swap, then use a piece of rope as a means of measuring for a new belt. Run the rope around all the pulleys and pull it tight so the clutch spring is keepin a good amount of tention on it (but make sure when you push the clutch, it will slacken, you don't want it to tight.) Then tie it, clamp it, whatever, then measure it, or bring it with you to find a new belt.
love ur mowers man i jelous i have just recently got in to riding mowers offroad and ur murry isa beutty and love the craftsman crawler u did a good job makin them
don't worry about reverse you won't use it that much, and the little bit that the belt does touch won't wear it out in the few seconds that it takes to back up
That's pretty sweet I did a pulley swap on my mower and can go 25-30 mph on it and still be getting a bit of speed I just need to get better brakes so I can get it to stop better and made a custom "clutch"/ tensioner for it to help with driving it
@V8Mike93 Very true! I guess I didn't mention that, there's a lot of stuff I should have mentioned, but didn't... Thanks for the post!
I just picked up an old MTD mower as a project. I've only had it a month and the double pulley thing has made modifying the engine and rear pulley a nightmare...

+FearlessFront (Todd Christopher) hey can u explain to me how to convert the deck drive pulley into the pulley that drives the rear axle
thanks lol.. been lookin for reccomended pully sizes for forever!
thanks man, I'm always making new ones!
Fearless, Ive been building an off-road tractor over the summer and am having some problems with the belt popping off, could you please make a detailed how to video of the custom tensioner pulley and what would your advice be
yes, a belt tensioner would take up some of the slack, but it may not be enough depending on how aggressive you are with the pulley swap.
Hey Fearless I was wondering if you could do a video for my buddy on how you made the sears fast or is it the same as these mud mowers
Nice work on the clutch
@LightsMB you have the mtd setup, you need to get a larger belt so the center double pulley will function.
i will depend on how big, or small the pulleys you are going to use are. Bigger on the engine, or smaller on the trans will make it faster.
your smart guy i can relate to all you have talked of , thanks dale
Hey fearlessfront. Can you show a diagram or do a video on showing how the clutch works on these mowers.Id like to know how they work to see if i can modify the one on my mower.
This video helped me make my off road tractors
Ive noticed you use a lot of older riding mowers, I was wondering if it is possible (not to difficult) to modify the mowers that use a hydrostatic/ automatic shift design? -Thanks Superjeep291
I went back to confirm some stuff I was doing to the builds I’ve been working on. As always, Great stuff. You’ll have to see how i welded the pulley tree into one piece. Same thing you do, for a 5"1/2 pulley for the front.... I’m having a hell of a time reworking the system on the Yardman, it has the weird variable-speed pulley system which acts like a jack shaft as well, making the pulleys on two levels. BTW, have any ideas on what to use an electric clutch for? I removed it, I guess Ebay?
My tractor had a 13.5 flat head single with a 1:1 ratio basically and it would go pretty good but i blew it up and swapped to a 18.5 opposed twin with the same pulleys and it’s considerably slower now, im gonna put a 5 in on the engine and I have 3 or 3 1/2 on the rear
Could you go more into detail with the vari drive system. I have a white 14-38 mud mower that has belt slippage with the vari drive system
Dear Fearlessfront, Can this work on a hydrostatic lawn mower. Such as a LTX1046 Cub Cadet. Mine is a little slow and i would like to make it just a little faster to cut the lawn faster?
@Fearlessfront

no, as fasr as I know, hydro have an internal bypass valve inside that will open if too much pressure is delivered to the pump. So a pulley swap probably wouldn't work. Larger diameter tires will make it a little faster though.
@thebutlerdiditfy

or you could try to increase the diameter of the engine drive pulley/sprocket, everybody deserves to go faster, good luck if you take my advise

+FearlessFront (Todd Christopher) Just wondering, on the murray, what bore is the shaft coming up from the trans? (I'm doing a pulley swap on that EXACT mower)
@MartyChristianSoldier

If you think it is slow now wait until it gets a little older, check the foot pedal to see if it is lose.
@pivotboy63 yea, the belt would be too small. The reason we didn't swap the rear, is because his shifter throw is too long and would contact the belt. If your shifter setup is different, you might be able to swap out there rear. It would be a little more forgiving as far as belt size goes. either way you go, you'll need a new belt.
the 4.5" on the trans would work well, you should probably get at least a 4-5" on the engine if your looking for a little bit of speed. That combo would leave you with good low gear power as well
nice man! im working on my pully swap, i had it all set and welded but when i put the bigger pully bak in and started running it i realized that the pully i welded on was not leveled so i had to break it apart and im gona weld it bak on there as leveled as i can get it to be.
Great vid. I noticed most of your front steering is custom to. Could you do a vid on the different ways to do this. I was thinking about welding the front axle to the very front of my mower to lower it and stretch it for more stability. I also read that you could flip the front axle also. Does this change the toe of the tire? Thanks again for all the help and the great vids!
And your videos are really helping me thanks man
@johndeere471 yeah, you will. unless you make the back pulley 2" smaller and the front 2" bigger. then you could probably use the original one
i did this on my 6 speed manual tanny and now i put the transxel bacxk in and the clutch now makes it go fast and it wont shift good and wont stop
@WavyGravyTrain1 you would have to drop the trans out the bottom, and take your old pulley off, if it will com off, mine didnt, so I welded a new one to it!
Just got a 20 HP Toro. Was trying to figure out how to get more speed. Thanks
Hey fearlessfront iv got a mtd im going to set up my mud mower like your buddys mower i took the 6speed and swap it out and stuck a 8 speed in it
@bubbawinchester you might need to make some tensioners. you just have to make sure that the belt doesn't rub the shifter rod. It usually will contact it when you shift. and maybe some little retainers to keep the belt on the pulleys when you push in the clutch
@MrDevondoyle you might try and get whats called a 3 jaw puller, you can usually rent them at an auto parts store. it will destroy the pulley when you use it. another option is to take it to a machine shop and have them press it out. they can be pain. The one on the murray never did come off, I had to cut it off then I welded a new pulley to what was left of the old pulley.
@bronco2roo That should be perfect! what size rear tires? I wouldn't go much more than 3-4 inches over the size you have from the factory..
@CalvinsShop I usually use a piece of rope, pulled really tight around the pulleys, then I pull it off, measure it, and I usually subtract an inch... That'll give you an idea. I donno if theres a math formula for it or not.
thanks man, they are pretty fun to mess around with. and cheap.
Ok I did a pully swap on my white I put a 9inch pully on the motor and a 3inch on the axle and all its doing is smoking the belt I fesized the belt to
@Fullthrottle440Garage

+James Richards Too much speed and not enough torque.try 5 inch on axle
@bubbawinchester yeah, welding bolts on works well. if the belt looks like it'll clear, then that'll be easy then
I have 2003 model stanley that is just like the green MTD. I need to figure out something for brakes. I did a pulley swap, but I have something ass backwards or the clutch sucks or something. The belt tightens up super tight, but the belt still slips and it kills out the motor after driving only a few yards. I put an opposed twin L head off a craftsman on it that I made a pull crank for using an idler pulley off the deck haha
i've got a craftsman 12.5 that i've swung the front axle over and chopped out the rear of the frame so it sits low, ive got a 5 speed tranny, 10 inch pulley up front and a 4 inch on the tranny, that baby goes!
For pulling heavy objects( atv plows, logs etc) wouldn't a slower gear ratio be better?
What pulley setup do you suggest on rear for a mower i cut grass with it a Murray wide body and it is slow as Christmas compared to my cub cadet i would like for it to do is around 10-15 that way when i cut grass i can just cut in lower gear than 6 like i do now thanks.
could I take the pulley off of the mower deck spindle and put it on the transaxle, will it bolt to the transaxle
hay fearless would u ever make the craftsman crawler a four wheel drive
@wildpanthercutlery I'm guessing it goes about 15mph, but I don't know for sure... I'll have to gps it. You can look at my new vid with the trailer to see how fast it goes.
@DosAmigosDnZ If you get it close you should be fine. When you get the pulley mounted, give it a few spins to make sure it doesn't wobble or that it's not warped...
How did u pulley swap the craftsman i have the exact same tractor and i went underneath to start on a pulley swap and the clutch lever/pulley is a half/quarter inch from the engine drive pulley and with the clutch pushed in its almost touching so if i swap the drive pulley over to the deck pulley to gear it up they are going to hit so I'm stumped....
@lizard5109 yes you can, you would have to build a jack shaft setup for the input shaft of the transmission. or else the pullies wont line up/..
@mowerfreak100 I dropped the axle down an inch to compensate for the mis-alignment. it gave me a small lift in the rear. just make sure you keep the belt retainers in the right place and you should be fine
I got a idea for you fearlessfront, how about you convert your push mower into a riding mower.
How did you figure out how far the tensioner pulley can swing on Paul tractor? I got the same slip problem.
Fearlessfront so on the drive pulley off of your engine how did you weld it center? Does it wobble or move from side to side?
thanks for the questions you have answered
I have a hydrostatic snapper and I’m trying to pulley swap I have a 5 inch on the mower and a 4 inch on rest what should i do
you got it, dont mess with the double pulley, just swap out the front or the rear pulley.... or both if you want The speed will depend on what size pulley u put on it.
@TheInfotwins No prob! I need to get out and do some mudding soon!
i made one with a 20" bicycle rim for a front pulley and a 2" pulley for the back one with a lowered suicide front end it's pretty great
@Fearlessfront ok thanks my last mower was a ibeam with a trans hooked up to it and that was jacked up 8 in. and still worked with out a jack shaft. started a new progect a cheep true value trackter and just wondered if a could do the same thanks for the help
@bronco2roo Yeah, probably. Not sure exactly, it will depend on your clearance and the size and off set of the tires. Jst put it all together, and then take your measurements. It would suck to get it wrong.
hey fearlessfront I have ask you befor can I make my old mtd spin the tires faster just to spin in the yard cut donuts and drift its all stock can I just pulley swap it and it will do what I want like 6in in front and 2in on the trans cause like you said be for the mtd has a one speed trans but it has that to stack pulleys in the center anyway if I pulley swap it will I get more out of it. my diff is welded now and it works great
what suze pulleys would u need on a stock mower that it will still have puuling power and go fast and if u have a stock mower and pully swap it how much faster would it go
I would go 6 or 8, I dont know if a 10 will fit very well
nice keep them coming
I found a double clutch pulley stock!!! On a Murray 11hp 36 3speed. I had it in the shop and I guess my dad threw it away :/ but oh well. I'm about to go fix my shifter I've moved it to a new spot because it has a different rearend in it.
Sounds good man, I wish you could ride with us, but we are up north in the Maine woods
Thanks for sharing. 👍
hell, I'm sure a lot of people would want to see that, myself being one of them!
are u able to pully swap a John deere hydrostatic and if I have to change transaxels which one can I use in a John deere d100 but am I able to pully swap a hydro bigger front pulley or smaller rear pully and we're do u buy your pullys at
I have a craftsman gt 18 that i use for a snow plow. I would like to get a bit faster without loosing too much power to rear. Going to lock dif but want to do it all at once.
If im building one just for speed can i just put smaller in the back and leave the front one alone? and smaller belt, and do i need a tension pulley? or do i put smaller one in the back and a big one in the front? whats the size pullies i need if i want to go like 30?
i got a 18.5 briggs in a troy built lawngarden mower. was used as a tractor to pull things and has no deck any longer. has hydro rear. i want to make it as fast as pos. do i need to change engine pulley to something smaller or bigger? thanks in advance.
I have a yard machine millennium edition 18hp. I'm in the middle of a pully swap. I have the rear pully off but the centet has spines and the shaft in the rearend where it mounts is splined aswell. Where do I get pullies like that or how could I solve this dilemma.
What is your tire setup on some of these? Did you modify a set of rear wheels to fit on the fronts??? I really wanna do similar to my yard machines
Do you add an inch to the length of the belt for every inch bigger you make the front pulley and subtract an inch off of the length of the belt for every inch you make the rear pulley smaller? Just go to napa and get a little longer belt?
@HUMMVE100 yeah, but you would need a centrifugal clutch on the motor so you could stop, a chain doesn't slip like a belt does.
yeah, thats the mtd vari-drive. it has a single speed rear axle, and all your gears are controlled through that double pulley
I have a varispeed with a 8 upfront and 3.5 on the axel I was wondering if you had any tips for measuring belts
I have a older lawnmower that has a auto trans would I need to swap it for a manual trans or could I keep it the same and just do a pulley swap and be fine
