How to Make a Rhombic Dodecahedron Infinity Lamp

Ойын-сауық

This video is about how to make a Rhombic Dodecahedron Infinity Lamp as made (with some changes) by Adam Savage on Tested. Original Video: • Adam Savage's One Day ...
Ingredients:
1.] 8mm wide, 10 meter long, (of which I only used 240 cm), single color, 3000k (color temperature) white LED strip with adhesive backing.
2.] 22 gauge speaker or LED wire.
3.] One 12 inch by 24 inch two-way 40% transparent mirrored Acrylic pane, and an additional 12x12 inch pane, both were 1mm thick.
4.] Scotch Super 33 vinyl tape (or any vinyl tape really).
Tools:
1.] Dremel or similar routing tool (recommend corded, not battery powered, for your sanity).
2.] 561 bit or the standard black grinding disc that a Dremel comes with. But be aware of the amount of plastic this will kick off.
3.] Soldering Iron (I use a weller WE1010NA).
4.] Lead free solder (I use mudder 0.6 mm).
5.] xActo Knife, or a sharp object of your choosing. Sticks aren't a great option.
6.] Scissors.
7.] Paper.
Software:
1.] Not required really, but I used Affinity Designer on Mac and their diamond tool to make the rhombuses (rhombi?). I'm sure gimp (which is a free digital photo editor and art studio [and yes, spelled correctly]) can do the exact same thing.
My Rhombus dimensions:
12 cm per side
X-dimension: 138.56406 mm
Y-dimension: 195.95917 mm
Music produced by CatatonicCheer (c) 2020 and used with permission.
• Rhombic
• Rhombic MidDux
CatatonicCheer: "Bit of a last minute request, so the soundtrack is mostly built using loops from Logic Pro X. My favorite one is the "Genetic Code," loop which is used in its original form around the 9 minute mark. The first song in the video is a riff on that loop to prime your ear for it later on."

I wouldve tried to score and snap the acrylic. That mask does almost nothing for dust, need m95 valve or respirator. Looks good I like the starry effect.

Could you share a link where you got that acrylic 2 way mirror from? I am planning for a dodecahedron with pentagons as the sides. I want to avoid using a foil but all the offers for coated acryl panels I found until now are destroying my budget :( great video with good explanations

Hey! If you love to tinker, buy acrylic pattern AND transparent mirror-window film. Then: flex the acrylic plates, paste the film on the plates and finally cut the film in the right form. Lovely greetings.

I too start with only having a dremel. I think I would first cut a diagonal with corners at 70.529° and 109.471°. Then draw the grid of rhombi. Now you'll see you have multiple strips of rhombi. Then you cut the strips into rhombi. Much easier because as humans we can do the same thing multiple times in a row faster than doing two things interleaved.

The rhombic dodecahedron nests in all the shapes, the regular dodecahedron has gaps, the Rhombic turns into a cube, the Rhombic fits into flower of life perfectly because the rhombic fits inside a hexagram shape, the hexagram is found throughout nature so the rhombic dodecahedron should replace the regular dodecahedron.
