    Finally a use for those long rows (just boring for grubs) & they aerate the soil! Now since not in ground is planting time different & love this idea. Feel use now box with slick “plastic” feeling on outside!

    That's what's so good about the gardening community on KZread. Loads of great ideas to be shared around. I haven't seen this one before. I assume you can grow many types of vegetables in them but how long will the boxes last?

    Yes and when they rot away you get left with a lovely bed with nice deep compost

    Yes you could get the kids to do this and get it planted up in half an hour.

    The best way to recycle cardboard, IMO. And I think this is a good idea for me to set out my squash plants this year. I have plenty of cardboard.

    I just did this for my new to me greenhouse I just received. It sure seems like a great way to quickly get some beds going even with a little bit of a late start to the season but I think it will be great for my starters that will love a little extra heat in the greenhouse. Thanks for the idea!

    This is brilliant! I have laid many no dig beds on previous lawn using cardboard as a base, but using boxes would be a really quick way to do things if I need an extra bed or two during the year. Thanks!

    What a good idea! You know we have lots of moles around here but the allotment is in the same street I live and I never get a look in, everyone is out with a bucket and spade every morning 🤭😅

    @@ericaslittlewelshgarden Am into raised beds and cardboard weed suppression. But those doing them on you tube lay down huge areas and just happen to have 5 ton of home made compost that they made 2 years ago from their almost market garden. Your idea is perfect for starting out on some crappy small weed infested plot that I happen to have access to. Over time it can become larger. My local Co-op store was very happy to provide the empty boxes.

    Doesn't the cardboard break down with moisture? I did this a few years ago but covered the boxes with black bags

    love this idea and will give it a go but could i ask what u might grow in the boxes? was thinking raddish, turnips and lettuce? also would flowers in them look weird i wonder!?!?

    I've grown salad veg, radish etc & baby veg in cardboard lined bread trays in the past.

    I know Paul (from Richard and Paul) made a much more shallow raised bed than this and put carrots in it. The carrots went really deep into the ground before so I don't see why it would be a problem.

    The card at the bottom will soon be soft and then start to break down so any root vegetables would be able to push down into the ground, so unless the ground underneath is particularly compacted you'd be fine x

    Hay I see you did get the 100L compost in the end! I see they gave plenty in stock near me according to their website. Why do you need to edge the beds with wood planks?

    You edge it with some wood so it keeps the overlaying cardboard down and keeps killing off the grass, otherwise the grass will just creep back in. Its temporary. I got this lot of compost at the begining of January when this video had been planned but due to getting Covid we've only just filmed. I've got 200 litres left but I want to top dress the plot with it and I've got 15 30litre buckets.

    Yes, it's well rotted compared to the lidl stuff but I can't pick up this bag on my own.

    @@ericaslittlewelshgarden I went to my local b and q in Cardiff and all the gardening area outside is sectioned off. You can't get to any of it. Plenty of compost there but can't buy 😭
